Chapter 78

Clyde asked. “I can’t check the time here. What time is it now?”

“It’s a little past one o’clock.”

“Damn it. To think I have to do this for four more hours.”

“Has the night been this long?”

Yesterday was also scary, but it didn’t feel like an eternity.

Clyde said with a short sigh. “I’m indeed strong against evil spirits, but that’s useless if I fall asleep. So, tell me all the nonsense you usually do.”

“I’ve never said nonsense.”

“Right. Say such nonsense.”

This man is really annoying.

“Um… how’s it going out there?”

“Evil spirits can be seen from time to time, but they’re not at a level that cannot be dealt with. Ah, even so, you must never open the door. No matter what happens. Understand?”

“Don’t worry. I won’t open it, even if you ask me to open it.”

Then I heard Clyde sneer. “It doesn’t matter because I’m going to break this door down then.”

“A bully…”

“What?”

“I didn’t say anything.”

I stared blankly at the half-melted candle. The day was too long. Before Clyde came, time didn’t flow terribly, but now it felt like it had been a week. I didn’t exaggerate it.  Maybe that’s why I murmured this without realizing it. “We’ll have to kill the demon quickly to return to reality.”

That was a funny thing to say. Living as Theresa had become my reality.

Suddenly, I became curious about something trivial. “When I go back, I want to eat the cafeteria sandwich. What about you?”

“Well, there’s nothing in particular I want to eat, but there’s something I want to see now.”

“Like what?”

“…”

Clyde did not reply.

What? Why is he suddenly silent? Could it be that he was possessed by the evil spirit? Feeling anxious, I asked close to the door as if I was putting my lips on it. “Clyde? You’re in front of me, right? You didn’t go anywhere, did you?”

“I’m. Don’t be loud. My head is ringing.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. “I was surprised you didn’t answer.”

So annoying.

“What time is it now?”

“Three o’clock.”

I was a little surprised as I spoke. I didn’t talk much with Clyde, but I didn’t expect that time had already passed this much.

“Time flies when I’m with you.”

Clyde replied. “I know.”

We continued our conversation following the flow of consciousness.

“By the way, what would happen to our midterm exam?”

“If we leave the dungeon, the remaining subjects will be tested separately. That’s the school rule.”

“By the way, I’m canceling the request I was going to make about the score for my community service.”

“Ha. Did your stupid head automatically erase the memories of me marrying you? It hasn’t even been a day yet.”

“We got married? When did that happen?”

Upon my attempt to forget it, Clyde spoke as if he found it ridiculous. “Huh, so that’s why they told me not to take black-haired beasts.”

“Hey, that’s a phrase used to mock my family, you white hair. Why are you crossing the line all of a sudden?”

“My hair is silver, not white. You don’t even know color anymore?”

“Whether it’s white or silver, it’s the same thing. You won’t show any signs of aging. Wow, I envy you.”

“Did you think this door would never open? That must be why you keep messing around.”

It was around the time when a bunch of meaningless words started to pour out, my throat was getting choked up, and my answers were getting slower.

“What time is it now?”

I answered, rubbing my sore eyes. “4:30”

Half an hour later, the evil spirits would disappear, and Clyde would enter the room. Come to think of it, there’s only one bed. What should I do? Those who didn’t like it could sleep on the floor.

Then I heard Clyde’s faint muttering. “Ha… If I hold out a little longer…” He seemed very tired.

“How about evil spirits now? Are you feeling better?”

“…Yes.”

“How was it when you went to catch the waiters with the soldiers? It seemed that they were determined to attack. Wasn’t it dangerous?”

“…”

“Are you hurt anywhere?”

“…”

Are you ignoring me again?”

“…”

He ignored my words mercilessly for a question he didn’t want to answer, but the silence felt strange. It felt like a silence that he couldn’t answer because of something.

“Are you asleep?”

Clyde wasn’t the man to sleep at this moment. I knew that better than anyone else. Suddenly, my mind became restless, and I jumped out of my seat. “Where did you go? Could it be you were attacked by the evil spirit… You’re just pranking me, aren’t you?”

“…”

“Clyde? I’m a little scared if you don’t answer.”

“…”

What time is it now? I checked the time, and it was still 4:55.

“Clyde. Answer me, Clyde!”

I wanted to open the door right away.

“You’re in front of me, right? Are you sleeping?”

I knew I shouldn’t open the door now. But what if something really happened? Thump. Thump. Thump.

“Clyde!”

“…Noisy.”

Ah.

“You surprised me.”

I lost all my strength and slumped down.

“Don’t you know how much I—”

However, I became speechless.

“Urgh….”

It was because a groan of pain came from beyond the door.

“What’s wrong with you?”

Ding!

[The Constellation ‘The Principle of Order’ has sponsored 10,000 coins.]

[It’s five o’clock.]

Creek! When I opened the door, I saw Clyde lying on the floor. Blood was flowing from his abdomen.

“Clyde!”

He was unconscious.

“I’ll call the doctor!”

Please don’t die, please.

Tak! Tak! Tak! Tak! When I raised my head to the familiar sound I heard suddenly, I saw the one-legged soldier.

“Hello, Lady. Congratulations on achieving your dream. I’m here to deliver a new dream to you.”

“Clyde is hurt. Please call a doctor!”

“Here’s your card.”

“Please! What’s wrong with this card now—”

Then a knife was pointed at my throat.

“Check your dream. Otherwise, I will execute you.”

I forced myself to swallow my anger. I had to quickly check my dream and call the doctor in a hurry. As soon as I quickly took the card, my eyes trembled.

[Theresa’s Dream: Sleeping in the same bed with Clyde every day.]

A foolish and endlessly naive dream was written as if mocking my foolishness. It was really a disgusting situation to the point my eyes were dizzy.

The one-legged soldier said to me, who was trembling in anger. “Have a good day today.”

Please shut up! How on earth can you have a good day under these circumstances!

The maids came to this place at that time, perhaps because they heard the commotion.

“What’s going on?!”

I reflexively shouted as soon as I realized someone was there to help. “Call the doctor! Hurry!”

* * *

The glass bell, Clyde’s holy relic, was confined in the subspace due to the rules of the dungeon, so his recovery was much slower than usual. Even so, his superhuman ability could stop the blood and connect broken blood vessels and muscles without potions. I was deeply relieved that I had given him the setting of a child born with a holy relic.

On the other hand, I couldn’t fully comprehend the current situation. I thought Clyde might have been hurt by the evil spirits. The evil spirits that roamed in the castle were much more powerful than those outside. However, there was a part that I didn’t understand.

The holy relic had the ability to suppress Clyde’s demonic energy and heal wounds at the same time. That meant, under normal circumstances, Clyde couldn’t continue bleeding.

When the knocking stopped yesterday, I heard the screams of other evil spirits. Afterward, Clyde leaned against the door like me and chatted the whole time. Even until the end, evil spirits couldn’t approach us.

Ah. Only then did I realize. He prevented the evil spirits from approaching with the power of a holy relic. Because of that, it didn’t have the power left to heal his wounds.

Clyde, who had regained consciousness, said, “Don’t think anything weird. I got hurt a little while catching the waiters.”

“Liar.”

Before wrapping his abdomen with a bandage, I saw that the area around his wound had been blackened.

“When you’re possessed by the evil spirit, the area around your wound erodes black.”

“…You know everything.”

Still, for a person who lost consciousness due to blood loss, it was fortunate that his condition improved quickly. I sat in the bedside chair with a blank face and looked at Clyde, who was lying still with a pale complexion.

Clyde said as if it was no big deal. “This will be fine in two days.”

His words were not bluff or exaggeration. His wound would heal in two days.

As I nodded still, Clyde sighed and washed his face dry with one hand. “I don’t know why I’m making excuses.”

Then he suddenly snapped his finger at me. “Come here.”
