44 Attempt

Trickles of blood were still dripping slowly from Hugo's wound, covering his chest, but it didn't seem to bother him at all, on the contrary, the wound only increased his desire to fight.

'When I found out that the space in my inventory was seriously limited, I figured I'd have to spend a lot of time before I solved that problem, but I guess now I understand how it works.' Zayne thought looking at Hugo's ring, 'He's the leader of a quite large bandit group, not even Roland has such a ring, so it's definitely a very valuable thing.'

Zayne was upset that he couldn't take the gold with him from the vault, however, now he had the opportunity to do so and he couldn't pass it up.

'It's hardly a small ring that can hold everything in this vault, but at least I can take the most valuable thing in here, so now I only have one way, right?' Zayne said to himself as his gaze grew deeper, 'I must win!'

Step. Step. Step.

Hugo stepped forward relaxed, twirling his dagger, which was his real weapon. The wavy shape of the blade was unusual, but when plunged into flesh, it was capable of inflicting terrible suffering.

Damn, it looks like it won't be easy...' Zayne gulped as he realized what lay ahead of him. The series of events had made Zayne more determined, as he had been in the hardest moments of his life, but such pain would give no one pleasure.

"I hope you're ready for a bloody battle. You're strong, it's true, but you don't seem to know how to enjoy a battle at all!" Hugo smirked before turning into a wind stream, quickly appearing in front of Zayne.

'Fast, but I can see his movements.' Zayne's gaze went to Hugo's dagger as he pointed his sword to the left, intent on blocking the attack.

"Hah, gotcha." Hugo grinned, flipping the dagger from one hand to the other and plunging it into Zayne's shoulder with an excited look.

"ARGH!!!" Zayne's face twisted in pain as streams of blood gushed from the wound, dropping a few drops on Hugo's joyful face.

"Hahaha, now I see we've started fighting seriously!" Hugo exclaimed turning the dagger around and ripping through Zayne's flesh.

"Bastard!" Zayne shouted furiously, swinging his sword violently in front of him.

Hugo just grinned, pulled the dagger from Zayne's shoulder, and took a few steps back. The scarlet blade was right in front of him, but it lacked just a bit to reach Hugo.

Zayne grabbed his shoulder, staring intently at Hugo. He was in so much pain that he wanted to scream to at least make the feeling go away, but the fear of further attacks, more awful ones, forced his mind to remain cold.

"So, what are you going to do now? Looks like you've already used everything you've got, I don't think you can surprise me." Hugo smirked mockingly walking from side to side as if he didn't feel threatened by Zayne at all, "Unfortunately our duel will be short, but I enjoyed it anyway."

"Agh... Well, you may be right, but you forgot something." Zayne took a deep breath, shook his head, and let go of his shoulder. He glanced at the bloody palm and muttered, "Unlike you, I'm not afraid of death, so even if I die but take you with me, it will still be my victory."

For a moment Hugo's face became serious before his sly smirk returned to him, "Yeah, you're right, but you know what? You, Travelers, are completely inexperienced, and as far as I know, the penalty for death for you is actually cruel. You can have ten lives, but that won't add to your skills. You need quality, not quantity!"

Zayne sighed, stretching, and said, "Well, in certain situations, quantity is quality in itself."

Whooooooooooosh.

Zayne ran forward, completely ignoring the searing pain in his shoulder since blood kept flowing from the wound. His gaze was fixed on Hugo, who seemed no longer able to laugh as his smirk looked fake.

'He's fast, but he's too focused on my sword. He doesn't know that I have another weapon, so I have to use it even if I take damage in return!' Zayne inwardly exclaimed as he swung his sword horizontally.

Hugo's eyes narrowed as he stepped aside, trailing the scarlet blade with his gaze. Hugo moved slowly, taking his steps unhurriedly, but the force of the wind gave him speed, preventing the sword from touching him.

'What a smooth cut, clumsy but damn confident. If it had been some slow bully in my place, that one would be dead by now. I've got to stop playing with him, this guy learns too fast.' Hugo said to himself as his gaze became serious.

Whoooooosh.

Hugo spun around at great speed with a dagger aimed at Zayne's neck. Everything was happening too fast for Zayne to have time to block the attack, so the dagger had to reach its target.

'What...?' Hugo's eyes went wide as Zayne threw his head back at the last moment, dodging the attack. The tip of the dagger left a bloody streak on his forehead, while Zayne's cold gaze was fixed on Hugo as if he had been waiting for this moment.

"For a bandit leader, you're too inattentive to details." Zayne said with a deadly stare as he pulled from his belt the dagger he had earlier taken from the bandit.

Crackle.

The sharp dagger plunged fully into Hugo's stomach, making blood gush instantly from his mouth. He was in agony, but Hugo didn't feel it at all, since he was too surprised, staring at the dagger hilt with wide-open eyes.

"To be killed by the dagger of one of your men. Doesn't that mean you're trash like them?" Zayne muttered before swinging his sword.

'No! I have to do something!' Hugo inwardly exclaimed, blocking the attack and leaping to the other side of the room.

His ring glowed again as a potion appeared in his hand, which he immediately drank. The effect was instant since the blood practically stopped flowing and his face no longer looked like a piece of paper.

'Damn, I should have finished this now. He's too fast after all, well, now I know there's a lot of interesting stuff in his ring.' Zayne spoke to himself preparing for one last move.

"Agh, you bastard! What kind of dirty tricks are these?!" Hugo shouted furiously, as his voice was like the roar of a beast, "Shit! Do you really think that's going to stop me!?"

Crackle.

Clenching his teeth tightly, Hugo pulled the dagger from his stomach and tossed it aside, then he took a deep breath and touched his eyepatch, slowly removing it.

'Hmm? What is he doing...?' Zayne was puzzled looking at the dark eyepatch falling to the ground.

Hugo raised his head, staring at Zayne with a calm look, "I didn't want to do it, but you didn't leave me any other choice."

At the same moment, Hugo opened his second eye. It wasn't green like the first one, the eye hidden under the patch was amber, with a vertical pupil. Along with the eye, a red aura appeared around Hugo, like crimson flame, that reminded Zayne only one thing - power of Chaos.
