Chapter 40, Debut in Turmoil (3)

Because the chorus is arranged in the auditorium, and they don't have special makeup. So when the song entered the stage of the chorus, these people suddenly sang, which surprised the surrounding audience.

In this segment, the song only sings the first verse. At the end of the song, all the members of the chorus shut their mouths, and almost immediately became the audience again.

"Hey, buddy, can you sing this song?" Just beside a chorus member, a young man with hazel freckles on his nose gently tugged at the sleeve of a singer next to him and asked in a low voice .

"Yes. We can sing." The chorus member replied simply.

"This song is so powerful!" the young man exclaimed.

"There are a few more sections in the back of this song, and here is only a section, and the rest is more powerful." Another person interjected, "I live nearby, and I have heard them practicing this song these days ..."

"Shut up, I can't hear the lines!" Another person complained.

The drama on the stage continued, and Vesuvius was already too small to accommodate the rebels. Regarding the future movement of the rebel army, Spartacus had a disagreement with another rebel leader, Kress. Spartacus believed that the Roman Legion was very powerful. After this battle, they had already attracted the attention of Rome, and it was difficult to support them staying here. The rebel army should first leave Rome before the legions on the border have been transferred back, go north, cross the Alps, first establish their own free country on the north side of the Alps, and then wait for their strength to grow. Come back to Rome and free all the slaves. But Kress thinks that Spartacus is too timid. He thinks that the Roman Legion is nothing to be afraid of. The rebel army should stay there, take down the Roman city, liberate the slaves there, and then continue to fight and liberate the slaves Strengthen yourself and destroy the evil slavery at least.

Neither of them could persuade the other, and they could only resort to democratic voting in the end. As a result, most of the rebel fighters chose to support Spartacus, and Kress was aggrieved because of this. Finally, when Spartacus led the army to the north, he asked himself to be the guard of the army. When the rebel army set off, he left the rebel army with a group of soldiers and attacked the Roman city by himself. As a result, they were ambushed by the Romans. When Spartacus arrived, they had been wiped out. The Romans executed all the prisoners of war with cruel punishment. Seeing all this, the rebel army was very angry. They were unwilling to march further north, and demanded revenge one after another. Spartacus could not convince everyone, so he had to vote again. As a result, everyone chose to stay in Rome to fight this time.

"Staying in Rome is bad news. Why did Spartacus obey democracy?" A spectator couldn't help asking, "What do those slaves know?"

"You're not right," retorted another. "If Kress obeyed democracy like Spartacus, there wouldn't be such a thing. And you said 'what do those slaves know?' Those priests and nobles will say the same about us!"

The Spartacus rebels remained in Italy, and under his command they continued to win, but Spartacus grew increasingly worried. Because he knows that victory is only temporary. The main force of the Romans was approaching. He kept trying to persuade the soldiers of the rebel army to go north quickly, but his proposal was always rejected by everyone.

Crassus led the Roman army to block the northward route of the Spartacus rebels. They approached step by step. Spartacus led the rebels to march south while contacting the pirates, hoping to cross the sea and retreat to Sicily. . But when they arrived at the appointed place, the pirate fleet did not appear. So they were surrounded by Crassus's large army. Crassus sent a letter to Spartacus to persuade him to surrender. He promised that if Spartacus surrendered, he could become a Roman citizen and general. But when Spartacus asked about the other slaves, Crassus replied: "They will return to the manor and the gladiator school to continue to be slaves."

Spartacus rejected Crassus' persuasion to surrender and led his troops to forcefully break through. After paying a huge price, they finally broke out. But the Romans brought in more troops, forcing Spartacus to fight Crassus' army in Apulia.

Before the decisive battle, Spartacus and Crassus meet. Crassus once again persuaded Spartacus to surrender with the previous conditions. Spartacus also rejected Crassus again. He made an agreement with Crassus that everyone will fight to the death on the battlefield tomorrow morning.

On the battlefield, the rebel army was defeated with fewer enemies and finally lost, and Spartacus died in battle. His adjutant, Enomayi and more than 6,000 other fighters were captured. Crassus ordered them all to be crucified.

The last scene of the play is the crucifixion of Enomayi and two other rebel soldiers. They were forced to carry their own crosses and erect them themselves. Then the Romans crucified them. The two warriors were nailed to the sides, and Enomayi was nailed in the middle.

"This is sacrilege!" said a priest in a low voice, clutching the crucifix on his chest.

Indeed, this scene is clearly imitating the scene of the crucifixion of Jesus in the Bible. At that time, Jesus was also carrying his own cross, and was crucified together with two other prisoners. The two prisoners were on both sides, and Jesus was in the middle.

The two crucified soldiers lowered their heads and sobbed. Enomayi, who was also crucified, looked around thinking about it, and then shouted: "What's wrong, my brother, can it be said that losing life is worse than death?" Is it even more terrible to be a slave? Yes, we failed to win freedom for ourselves in the end, but we at least won for ourselves never to be slaves again! This time we lost the battle, but in the long run, our cause will be decided There will be no failure, the slavery system in which people oppress people and people enslave people will definitely be overthrown! Spartacus' fame and career will be immortal! Brothers, let us sing our war song for the last time!"

Then Enomay first sang: "Debout! les damnés de la terre, Debout! les forats de la faim..."

During his singing, the two crucified soldiers also stopped crying, raised their heads, and sang:

“La raison tonne en son cratère :

C'est l'éruption de la fin"

The Roman soldier holding a spear raised his head in horror, looked at the slaves who were crucified, and shouted in a panicked voice: "Don't sing! Don't sing!" A soldier even shot Enomay's rib with a spear With a stab, blood immediately flowed out.

"This, this is really terrible blasphemy! Lord, may you send down thunder..." the priest whispered, gritting his teeth.

In the "Bible", when Jesus was crucified on the cross, in order to check whether he was dead, a Roman soldier named Longinus also stabbed Jesus in the ribs with a spear. Later, this gun became a sacred object of Catholicism and was called the gun of Longinus. There are even legends such as "As long as you hold this gun, everyone within a 120-foot range will surrender, and the holder of this gun can even dominate the fate of the world, but those who lose it will be killed immediately." These legends have really deceived many people in later generations, and even Hitler once fanatically prayed for it. It is said that he also got the holy gun once, however, this did not allow him to win the Second World War.

But Enomayi's singing didn't stop, he continued to sing.

This line of lyrics has already been sung once before. Its lyrics and melody are very simple, so many audience members in the theater also sang along. Only the priest looked livid, bowed his head and said nothing.

Different from the previous chorus, this time, the singing team sang the whole song directly. Of course, in the original history, this song should have six stanzas. But Joseph, who traveled through time, couldn't fully remember the lyrics of these six paragraphs. Because in the Chitu Kingdom of later generations, due to translation reasons, (some passages were translated into Chinese and it was almost impossible to sing) this song basically only sang three passages. So Joseph plagiarized it now, and only the original first, second, and sixth paragraphs remained.

With the singing of the second verse, the whole theater suddenly fell silent. Over the years, under the influence of people like Voltaire, the French are far from being "pious" in the past, (but to be honest, France, as a filial daughter of God, did not do too many profane things in the past .) But such a direct denial of religion still surprised everyone. But because of the general dissatisfaction with the church, such extreme denial of religion made everyone more excited. When the chorus sounded, more people joined in the chorus.

This is followed by the sixth paragraph, which is more explicit and full of passion for rebellion:

At this time, the priest had slipped out quietly and disappeared into the street.

After the song was sung, the entire theater was silent for a while, and then a voice rang out: "Great, this song is great! Can you sing it again?"

Immediately afterwards, the entire theater was filled with prayers like this:

"Sing it again, I haven't remembered some words!"

"Please, sing it again."

"Sing it again!"

Originally, the curtain had already been lowered, and the actors and singing team were planning to leave, but under such a request, everyone had no choice but to sing the song again, and then again... In the end, they sang it a total of six times. Apparently, the premiere was a huge success.
