Chapter 29 Part 1 – Ruan Yōu in their eyes — weak, aggrieved, and helpless.

Ruan Yōu was so hungry that she didn’t care what clothes she was wearing.

Fortunately, Gu Fuchen didn’t say anything disappointing like “Don’t eat, we’ll have them prepare something at home.”

She unilaterally declared that the street food at the night market was the soul of Chinese cuisine!

Even if the chefs at home followed the recipe and made delicious dishes, they couldn’t capture the unique essence of the street food, which couldn’t be learned.

During her freshman year, after class, she would abandon the cafeteria and head straight to the street food market outside of campus with Lu Ming. They would arrive after 5 pm, and without exception, it was always packed with people.

The street food market was opposite the university, about 20 meters long, and was considered a famous food night market in the area. Some vendors placed two wooden tables at the back where customers could buy food to take back to their dorms or eat on the spot.

Ruan Yōu fastened the belt on her coat and took off the black leather gloves she had worn when the driver took her to the fashion show. Instead, she wore another set of haute couture that she had brought with her.

The high heels on her feet were replaced with warm and stylish boots. She put on a long black coat that reached her calves, wrapped a scarf around her neck, and didn’t take a wide-brimmed hat. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat here would be too flashy and ostentatious. Instead, she wore a black leather beret, adding a touch of coolness to her elegant outfit.

Only after making sure she was bundled up tightly did Gu Fuchen get out of the car with her.

Song Wen looked for a parking spot. He had originally intended to park the car and go to buy street food for Miss Ruan and the sister fanatic boss, but he was refused by both Gu Fuchen and Ruan Yōu.

Gu Fuchen threatened, “Don’t get out of the car.”

His tone was fierce and more serious than when he faced difficult problems at work.

Song Wen looked like he had something to say but was holding back.

In the middle of winter, it’s more comfortable to playing with his phone and turning on the heater in the car.

Now besides this sister fanatic boss, who would consider going out to eat at a roadside stall and braving the cold wind as a proud achievement?

Mr. Gu, what are you guarding against me!!

Song Wen gradually felt speechless and choked up by the boss’s constant torment.

It’s not even the end of November yet, but wearing a coat already feels warm enough.

At night, the lights of the snack street cast a blurry shadow.

Each vendor hung a rechargeable lighting lamp on their cart, and the bright white light was piercing, making the street appear bright and dark intermittently.

Ruan Yōu and Gu Fuchen walked to the corner of the street, where the roadside stalls selling chicken wing rice and fried cold noodles were crowded with people.

“This fried cold noodles place is super delicious, but there are a lot of people buying it. Lu Ming and I don’t like to line up, so we only buy it when we happen to come across less people.”

The fried cold noodles cost eight yuan and can be topped with chicken and ham sausage. The chewy and soft cold noodles are coated in sauce, combined with the boss’s secret sauce, each bite is sour and spicy, and when you chew carefully, you can also feel a hint of sweetness.

Gu Fuchen asked, “Where do we line up to buy this?”

The crowd in front of the stall was packed.

Ruan Yōu smiled, “Let’s not eat this today.”

Eating spicy food on an empty stomach can be uncomfortable for the stomach. In winter, it’s better to have a warm bowl of duck blood vermicelli soup!

As the two were talking, there were constantly students passing by and walking in.

The bosses of the chicken wing rice and fried cold noodles stands each occupy the golden locations on both sides of the street corner. The two shops have many customers, and the space in the middle for people to walk is occupied by university students queuing up. The students are packed so tightly that they are almost back-to-back, leaving only a narrow gap that they have to squeeze through.

Gu Fuchen silently observes the situation.

Ruan Yōu is already prepared to clear a path for her brother Gu Fuchen. She and Lu Ming did this a lot when they were freshmen. It’s common at crowded street corners, but Gu Fuchen has definitely never encountered this situation before.

With her hands in her coat pockets and her almond-shaped eyes slightly raised, she says, “Let’s go eat egg waffle and duck blood vermicelli soup. Follow me later.”

In her experience, there are a lot of street vendors at the entrance, and they need to go a little further back.

Gu Fuchen comes back to his senses and says seriously, “This is not something you should do.”

Ruan Yōu really wants to roll her eyes at her brother.

He makes it sound like it’s something he should be doing, Gu Fuchen, the noble and aloof president of Bozhan Corporation with trillions in assets.

Layer after layer of buffs stacked up, you are even less qualified to do this, my noble brother!

If Lu Ming knew that one of her idols, the nobleman Gu Fuchen, not only came to eat street food with her but also had to squeeze through the crowd to clear the way, she would probably scold her.

— Ah? Ah? Ah? You dare to make my idol, the Overlord, accompany you to eat street food? Ruan Yōu, how dare you! Not only did you not buy good duck blood vermicelli soup and egg waffle and serve them in front of him, and clean the table until it was spotless, which was already a great insult, now you want him to clear the way for you, what if he wrinkles his haute couture custom suit?!

To this, Ruan Yōu already had a reply in mind: “Haute couture clothing won’t be worn twice. It doesn’t matter if it wrinkles o(TヘTo).”

Gu Fuchen didn’t know that his sister’s thoughts were drifting. He walked straight towards the street corner, and the two of them, with their high appearance and strong aura, inadvertently attracted the attention of many university students who secretly watched them pass by.

— Oh my god, this coat is haute couture, my idol just wore it at the fashion show, and there really are people who wear haute couture to eat street food!

— The girl next to him has such a noble temperament. Help, where did this aristocratic young lady come from?

When the university students passed by, their eyes always lingered on the two of them for a while.

When Gu Fuchen entered the snack street, he noticed that no one was around. He turned around and saw Ruan Yōu standing there, still staring down, with her face wrapped in a scarf, revealing only a pair of sparkling almond eyes. “Ruan…” he paused and continued, “Little sister, come here.”

His voice was not too high or too low, but sounded very charming, completely in line with everyone’s imagination of the “Overlord”.

With his voice and gaze, everyone’s attention was focused on Ruan Yōu.

— They are siblings!

— Why does my brother only order me to buy things for him? The country owes me a brother like Overlord.

Even the boss making fried cold noodles paused briefly under his wife’s gossip and tactically looked towards Ruan Yōu.

Ruan Yōu slowed down, realizing that everyone’s eyes were focused on her. Her face, hidden under the scarf, turned red, and she nervously ran behind Gu Fuchen.

Gu Fuchen was satisfied and politely said to the college students squeezed at the street corner, “Excuse me, please let us through.”

Just like everyone else before, with a simple “excuse me,” they managed to squeeze out a narrow path and enter the street.

As Ruan Yōu walked through the crowd, she vaguely heard a few comments.

The voices were very soft, but she still heard them.

“Her brother is so gentle!”

“Yes, yes, so gentle, wuwuwu, their sibling relationship must be very good.”

Gentle?

Ruan Yōu stared blankly at the back of Overlord’s brother until Gu Fuchen walked with her inside and the crowd gradually thinned.

“Where are the duck blood vermicelli soup and egg waffle?”

“Huh?”

Ruan Yōu didn’t react for a moment, her mind paused, and quickly looked around, pointing to the red tent cloth in front of them: “There, the place with the small tent is where the duck blood vermicelli soup is.”

On the chilly evening of early winter, the female boss selling duck blood vermicelli soup was particularly thoughtful. She set up a red tent cloth that could accommodate two small tables and had “Duck Blood Vermicelli Soup” printed in large black letters. There were more people in front of her stall.

Gu Fuchen nodded, “Where are the egg waffle?”

Ruan Yōu thought for a moment, “They should be at the end of this small road.”

She hadn’t been there in a long time, so her memory was a bit hazy.

Gu Fuchen said, “Wait for me at the duck blood vermicelli soup stall, I’ll go buy the egg waffle.”

There was a tent cloth over there, so it shouldn’t be too cold.

Ruan Yōu dryly responded, “Oh.”

She paid and put her hands in her pockets, hunching over and waiting for the female boss to bring over the duck blood vermicelli soup. Her eyes were lifeless as she stared at the busy figure of the female boss, feeling a sense of unreality.

Gu Fuchen, the villain in the novel who was portrayed as a fearsome and ruthless CEO, was actually her biological brother.

And now, he was buying egg waffle for her in an unfamiliar food street.

Even though he didn’t even know the exact location and could only sense a vague direction, he still did it.

Ruan Yōu snuggled into her scarf, feeling the soft knit brush against her cheeks, feeling warm.

If her brother was like this in her first family, her rabbit doll would not have been taken away by the neighbor boy.

Years later, the thought of her rabbit doll still brought a faint sourness and grievance to Ruan Yōu’s heart.

Sheng Bei had so many stuffed animals, and everyone in her family spoiled her. She could have anything she wanted, so why did she have to take hers?

It was her first birthday present, and she had begged her foster parents for a long time before they agreed to buy it for her.

When her toy was taken away, they didn’t dare to scold Sheng Bei and her brother, and instead blamed everything on her.

In the depths of winter, Sheng You pushed her into the snow and snatched her rabbit doll, proudly shouting to the courtyard, “Beibei, brother took it!”

Everyone in the courtyard rushed out, fake-scolding Sheng You but not expecting to pull her up from the ground, nor did they return her doll to her.

Ruan Yōu sighed heavily.

Her childhood memories are not deep, and the rabbit doll is one of the few vivid memories she has. She began the long wait after being sent back to the welfare home by her first foster parents.

The aunties at the welfare home prayed that the next kind person would take her away.

The second foster family did come, but the result was laughable.

“Here are your two bowls of duck blood vermicelli soup.” The owner brought over the steaming vermicelli and Ruan Yōu snapped out of her thoughts. “Thank you.”

The female owner saw that Ruan Yōu’s appearance didn’t look like she was someone who ate from food stalls, but she knew she could get extra soup and vermicelli for free when ordering, so she couldn’t help but ask, “Have you tried our duck blood vermicelli soup before?”

Ruan Yōu: “Yes, I have.”

The owner wanted to ask more, but there were still many customers waiting in front of the stall. She just smiled and said, “If you want more soup, just let me know. I have to go back to work now.”

“Okay.”

After the owner left, Gu Fuchen’s figure appeared in view, holding freshly baked egg waffle in his hand, which didn’t match his temperament.

He sat opposite Ruan Yōu, the egg waffle were very hot, and he didn’t hand them over right away. “You should eat the vermicelli first.”

Ruan Yōu caught a whiff of the aroma of milk wafting through the air. Unlike the egg waffle made with saccharin and other seasonings found in the mall, this one had a more authentic fragrance. She picked up her chopsticks to prepare to eat the noodles but her eyes wandered to the egg waffle in the plastic bag.

Ruan Yōu continued eating and watching the plastic bag, secretly desiring to eat the egg waffle but she didn’t say anything.

“It’s still hot,” Gu Fuchen couldn’t help but say.

The packaging of the roadside stall was simple, only providing a small plastic bag.

Ruan Yōu didn’t want to expose her impatient side. After all, she wasn’t a snack lover.

She also had the elegance and composure of a young lady!

Repeatedly nodding one’s head to affirm oneself.gif

“I didn’t say I wanted to eat,” Ruan Yōu muttered softly.

After a few seconds passed —

She couldn’t resist anymore.

She took a bite of the vermicelli and said seemingly casually, “Everyone says freshly baked egg waffle are the most delicious — crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and fluffy in your mouth~”

With that, she looked at him playfully and asked, “Don’t you agree~”

Gu Fuchen chuckled and took out a handkerchief from his inner pocket. He wrapped it around the egg waffle and handed it to her, saying, “Here, have some. It’s not hot anymore.”

Ruan Yōu accepted the egg waffle with a smile, her eyes and eyebrows curved beautifully. Her apple cheeks were rosy and plump when she smiled, making people want to poke them.

A simple egg waffle could make her so content.

Gu Fuchen looked at the egg waffle and duck blood vermicelli soup, lost in thought.

Ruan Yōu was in a good mood. She ate the egg waffle and duck blood vermicelli soup at the same time. She took a small bite of the vermicelli, which was a bit hot but very delicious. Eating it in the early winter made her feel very happy and satisfied, and she squinted her eyes contentedly.

It tasted just like she remembered.

She had been here for a year. Even though many shops around had changed hands in the past three years, she still felt a natural sense of familiarity here. For Gu Fuchen, she was like the hostess of this place.

When people are in familiar places, they tend to talk more.

She took a bite of the egg waffle and whispered, “When I first started college, Lu Ming and I ate in the cafeteria for over a month. Eventually, we got sick of it.”

Ruan Yōu thought of something and smiled slightly, “One day, when we were walking by the cafeteria, we made a pact not to eat there that day. But by noon, we were so hungry we had to go back and eat there anyway. Later, an older student took us out to eat duck blood vermicelli soup on the street across from campus, and that’s when we discovered this hidden food street.”

“But we didn’t have many chances to come back.”

“They don’t open until 5:30pm here, and during our first year, except for Wednesdays, we had classes in the evening, so we couldn’t come. We finally had the chance to come after the first half of the semester, but it was just as cold as it is now. Since we lived in different dorms, we couldn’t eat together if we took the food to go. We didn’t come out here often, but one night Lu Ming was craving the duck blood vermicelli soup, so she called me at 8:00pm and asked me to come out and eat with her.”

It was final exam season and they were about to go home for the winter break. It was much colder then than it is now and the owner hadn’t put up the tent yet. They bundled themselves up like two thick penguins and sat here, eating and braving the wind.

“We wore a lot of layers, so we weren’t really cold. We ate here for dinner four out of the seven days of the week during final exam.”
