Chapter 29: Lure the Snake out of the Hole

Not long after, the Special Operations Unit members left the safe room, carrying the dead woman out on a stretcher.

He Mu came to the balcony. Wei Lan beside him had stopped crying and was just a little choked up.

“What are you looking at? Never seen a woman cry?”

Before He Mu said anything, Wei Lan remarked.

“No, I want to ask how much these two Scythe Weasels are worth.”

Wei Lan turned around and gave He Mu a surprised look with eyes that were filled with tears.

“The claws… of Scythe Weasels are more valuable. They can easily be processed into daggers. Each claw is worth about 100,000 yuan, and other parts aren’t worth a lot.”

“I’ll sell the first Scythe Weasel for money to donate to the orphanage. The other Scythe Weasel with a broken claw I’ll give it to your younger brother as a compensation for his machete. Help me deal with its corpse, and transfer the money to my card.”

He Mu said while taking out his phone and opening a certain communication software.

“Here’s my contact information.”

“Why don’t you handle it yourself?”

Wei Lan also retrieved her phone at the same time and asked, adding He Mu’s contact information.

“I want to be alone,” He Mu replied.

After exchanging contact information and informing Wei Lan of his card number, He Mu made a long jump from the balcony on the second floor and disappeared into the darkness soon after.

These were the only things he could do today.

The day was getting brighter.

Meanwhile, at Nancheng Guardian’s residence.

Early in the morning, the chief captain of the Nancheng Special Operations Unit, Sun Wei, rushed over.

At that moment, Nancheng’s Guardian, Wu An, was training. Although there wasn’t much equipment involved, a thunderous boom echoed in the air with his every punch.

“Go in.”

Seeing Sun Wei arrive, Wu An withdrew his fist and took the former into his study.

“Elder Wu, the man who escaped earlier was found. He was thrown into the sewer, and I don’t know if he was gnawed by some monster because only his skeleton was left. If not for the DNA test and surrounding pieces of rags that matched the person’s attire, he was really unrecognizable.”

As soon as Sun Wei sat down, he reported in a whisper.

Wu An nodded slightly: “He must have been silenced by people within the Xinyue Alliance.”

Sun Wei listened. He wanted to say something, but stopped.

Wu An smiled: “You came for the countermeasure I said last time, right?”

“Yes, you said that you would tell me in 10 days, and now 12 days have passed.”

Sun Wei said with some expectation.

Wu An looked out the window, and said softly: “There is no other way now, but to lure the snake out of the hole.”

“L-Lure… the snake out of the hole?”

Sun Wei heard his answer and froze. After a moment, he understood what Elder Wu meant.

“You mean… make the army stationed around the monster nest let some monsters into Nancheng, create an illusion for the Xinyue Alliance that the city is about to collapse, and then lure them to show themselves?”

Sun Wei’s tone was a bit complicated. He knew very well what this so-called “lure the snake out of the hole” meant.

It was like pulling chestnuts out of the fire, and one mistake would probably result in a large number of casualties.

When the time came, be it the Guardian or a chief captain of the Special Operations Unit like him, both had to bear the blame.

“There is no way out of it. That nest near Nancheng is likely to erupt in a year or two, and the strength of Nancheng is already very weak. If the Xinyue Alliance comes up with any internal mischief, we are likely to follow in the footsteps of Lin City.

“And this time, it isn’t just to lure the snake out of the hole. It can also be considered a drill, so that in the future even if the city collapses, we and the ordinary people will have some experience in dealing with it.”

Wu An spoke slowly but firmly.

It was obvious that this answer was a result of deep consideration.

Sun Wei, however, remained puzzled. He didn’t understand why the Guardian only waited until today to tell him this scheme.

If he had told him 12 days ago, he would have been able to prepare earlier, wouldn’t he?

Seeming to read what Sun Wei was thinking, Wu An helplessly said: “This is a helpless move. In fact, before this, I have another proposal, just that it was rejected.”

“Uh, what proposal?”

“Yu Chao returned to Nancheng yesterday. Before he returned, he passed the examination of Capital University and became its new student president.”

“Huh? You’re referring to… He Feng’s younger cousin? He’s almost a third-year? President of the student council of Capital University?”

Sun Wei widened his mouth and showed a stunned expression!

The student president of Capital University had traditionally been served by students who were approaching the end of their sophomore year.

And Capital University was the strongest university in China. Becoming the president of the student council of Capital University, it was self-explanatory in what it represented.

“Yes, it’s him. More than 10 days ago, he killed a giant monster with a combat power of more than 600. When this news came out, there were many people speculating that he had accepted the school examination.

“Now it seems that this is indeed the case.

“He is likely to become the… Lord of Hope in the future. Nancheng actually produced someone like that!”

Sun Wei clicked his tongue in wonder, his expression somewhat uplifted.

But a moment later he realized something, and his face gradually turned ugly.

“Elder Wu, you went to beg him?”

Wu An smiled despondently: “Well, his current mentor is a big figure in the military, and he himself may become the Lord of Hope in the future. If he is willing to step in and say a few good words in front of his mentor, the military may send more troops to station in the nest near Nancheng.”

“He… refused?”

When Sun Wei asked, he actually already knew the answer.

If he hadn’t refused, would Elder Wu have thought of using the method of luring the snake out of the hole?

“He loves his apprentices, so this is a normal move. If he just became a student council president and instantly sought benefits for his hometown, no one would be assured in him ascending to a high position one day.”

“Not to mention…”

Speaking of this, Elder Wu sighed.

“What’s more, he still has some grudge against me. After all, Nancheng Tengyun Foundation chose He Feng back then, but later on rescinded.”

“Uh… But Nancheng is his hometown, after all. It is the place where he was born and raised.

“If I hold a grudge against my hometown for not receiving support from the Tengyun Foundation, shouldn’t I, an outsider, have run away long ago?”

Sun Wei was quite indignant.

After saying that, he couldn’t help but be a little curious: “Then why didn’t you choose him in the first place?”

Wu An turned and looked straight into Sun Wei’s eyes, saying softly: “Some teenagers see hope in their eyes. Hope, you know?”

“I don’t know.” Sun Wei shook his head with a dumbfounded expression.

“It’s fine if you don’t. I can only tell you that I have seen many teenagers who have hope in their eyes. He Feng has it, so I chose him.

“Yu Chao didn’t, so I didn’t choose him.”

Hearing the Guardian mention He Feng again, Sun Wei’s eyes turned dim.

If it weren’t for what happened to He Feng, would they be so worried today?

Although there wasn’t much difference between He Feng’s and Elder Wu’s combat power, the difference in age and experience couldn’t be compared at all.

It could be clearly said that as long as He Feng returned to Nancheng to become a Guardian, Nancheng would be carefree for at least 10 years.

“Elder Wu, there must be something fishy about He Feng’s death. I don’t understand why the higher-ups decided to…”

The more Sun Wei thought about it, the more unwilling he was, and couldn’t help but slam the table again.

Cracks appeared on the desk that was just replaced a few days ago.

Wu An showed a helpless expression. He quietly decided to bring this captain into the study again.

With a regretful glance at the desk, he explained.

“Standing at different heights and seeing different things, it is normal that you don’t understand them.

“Speaking about the plan to lure the snake out of the hole. If it causes casualties, will the relatives of those casualties understand us?

“But what can we do? If we are alone, we can be emotionally involved, and do it knowing what we can’t do. But when we carry a city on our backs, every step must be carefully calculated. It is better for us to be like a machine that only knows the trade-offs.

“We are just carrying the city, while those above are carrying the country. Every step for them trembles, like they are walking on thin ice. Some of the choices may seem insensitive, but they don’t have a better choice. It’s like 10 years ago when China had no choice but to use nuclear weapons once to destroy a nest.

“In the end, they faced the retaliation of the monsters, and many of the loved ones of the big shots perished. What could they do? Assemble an army to take revenge? They can’t. Not only that, but they also had to endure, and were ordered to stop the spread of the news.

“Because if they don’t stop such an extremely negative piece of news, next year, the fertility rate and the number of people joining the army may drop by a huge amount. By then, we humans will be more dangerous, and if we really go back to the situation we had decades ago, who wouldn’t let down those who died at Tianqian Gate?”

Hearing these words from Elder Wu, Sun Wei could only sigh.

A moment later, he suddenly thought of something and lifted his head: “I remember that He Feng has a paralyzed brother. Back then He Feng privately funded Yu Chao a lot of money and resources. If not, Yu Chao couldn’t have gone to Capital University.

“How about we start with He Feng’s brother and ask him to beg Yu Chao? After all, Yu Chao owes the He family a favor… Afterwards, we will find a way to compensate for He Feng’s brother, what do you think?”

Wu Lao glanced at Sun Wei, and said with some indifference: “I think Yu Chao has already decided. We will only destroy the love between the cousins by doing that.”

“But how do you know if you don’t try? Even if there is only a one-in-a-million chance, we should still try, shouldn’t we?”

“I don’t want to scheme around another paralyzed child, not to mention that the He family has already done enough.”

“Uh, but you just said you wanted to be an emotionless machine…”

“That is why I’m just the Guardian of Nancheng, not the Guardian of China.”

Sun Wei was speechless.

“So Elder Wu, when will the plan to lure the snake out of the hole be implemented?”

“Before the students and teachers return to school. During this period, Nancheng is the strongest, so we can avoid as many casualties as possible.”

“In other words, within 20 days?”

“Yes.”
