The Adventurer’s Guild

I immediately knew which building was the adventurer’s guild. Why? It was way bigger than all of the other buildings.

“So this is the adventurer’s guild.”

Made of bricks, it was the kind of large building that looked really sturdy. It had a double door entrance, both of which were left open. Brawny looking people were entering and exiting the doors.

Without any worries, Marius headed straight inside. I, on the other hand, felt quite tense at the strange atmosphere.

Once I entered inside, I saw that the building had the same interior aesthetic as the outside. Marius had walked straight to a counter near the entrance.

“I would like to register as an adventurer.”

The lady staffing the counter was taken by surprise at the voice, quickly fixing her posture.

“Adventurer registration, right! You can do that here!”

Saying that, she began to prepare something.

“First, please place your dominant hand on this board.” Taking out a thick board, the employee directed Marius to place his hand on it.

While I didn’t know what the purpose of doing so was, Marius promptly put his hand on the board.

The moment he put his hand there, there was some indication that something had moved. I don’t really know how to explain it. It was as if something about the atmosphere had changed, or a feeling of a hunch, or something.

“What is this…?”

I looked with curiosity at the board. Hearing my question, the employee said “ah” and began to explain it to me.

“This is a magic tool that allows us to measure your attributes. It records your name, age, and physique. Furthermore, it might also determine your latent potential.”

“Might determine…?”

“If it was that easy to determine your ability, there would be no hardships after all! Okay, you can lift your hand up now.” While talking to me, she had finished measuring Marius’ attributes.

“This will be used to record your information stored on a guild card. The guild card will cost ten markas as the registration fee. If you ever lose the card and need it replaced, it will cost another ten markas, so please be careful.”

“Yes,” Marius responded as he gave the same kind of large copper coin to the clerk as he gave at the gate.

“I’ve received ten markas. Well then, I will proceed with registration.”

From the counter, she began to operate a machine that looked like a copy machine at a normal office. After two minutes, something came out.

“Thank you for waiting. This is your guild card.”

She handed a black card that was about 5 mm thick. It said Marius’ name on the front of the card, along with an ‘E.’

“Are there any problems with the name on the card?”

“No, this is correct.”

“Then please place your finger on the circle at the bottom right of the card.”

Following her directions, Marius placed his thumb on a black circle at the bottom right of the card.

“Woah,” he exclaimed as his eyes widened.

“Hehehe, were you able to see it?”

“Huh? What?” It seemed like something happened that I did not see.

“The adventurer card has an ability that only the owner can use. Only Marius can see what happened. You can see your attributes, right Marius?”

“Y… Yes!”

“From now on, your commissions and success rate will be recorded, so please reference it. The ‘E’ refers to your current adventurer rank. By completing commissions your rank will increase. Commissions also have required ranks, so please pay attention.”

While Marius continued to stare at his card, the employee finished giving all the necessary information.

Marius got to see something that I could not.

Once she finished her explanation, it was my turn. Like Marius, I placed my hand on the board.

Upon doing so, I had the sensation of static electricity cover my whole body, giving me goosebumps.

“Wah, what is this… It’s giving me chills. Marius, you were fine?”

It was only an instant, but I definitely had felt discomfort, causing me to scowl.

“Hmm? I didn’t really feel anything though…”

Marius responded nonchalantly. Perhaps I was just imagining it?

“You probably have a high sensitivity to magic. There are some people who feel something every now and then.”

“Sensitivity to magic?”

“It’s not enough to use magic on their own, but some people are able to sense magic. Generally people say that even if you don’t have the ability use magic, you can still use enchantment magic, but without magic sensitivity, even that is hard”

“Huh~”

Even if I hear about magic, I don’t really quite get what it is yet. I’ve never seen magic in my life before. It’s something that has only existed in stories.

Even if this board is called a magic device, it gave off more of the impression of a high-tech device to me.

“Okay, you can lift your hand now.”

As soon as she said that, I instantly lifted my hand up.

“I just explained everything to Marius. Do you need me to repeat any of the explanation?”

“Ah, no I’m okay.”

“Then, I need ten markas to continue the registration.”

Hearing that, I turned to look at Marius.

“Marius, I’m relying on you.”

“Yeah yeah”

Once again, Marius took out a ten markas coin and handed it to the employee. She had a strange expression as she accepted it.

She was probably wondering something like, “I wonder what’s the relationship between these two… siblings? lovers?” She wanted to ask more, but she had to focus on the registration. I could tell by the way her hand trembled.

Knowing that she had to complete her duties, she went back to working at the counter.

I glanced at Marius while waiting.

He was still staring at his adventurer card. Sometimes, he would put his finger on the bottom right circle, and look at the information that only he could see. His face looked relaxed, and he seemed quite happy.

Based on his clothes and the things he said, I could guess that he was not raised with wealth. He was probably happy to have his own adventurer card because of that.

“Thank you for waiting. This is your card, Mina-san.”

The employee handed me my completed card. On the face of the card it had my name “Mina Itoi”, and it also had ‘E’ written on it like Marius.

“Then, please confirm your name and the information inside.”

Taking the card with my left hand, I put my index finger on the circle in the bottom right of the card.

“Woah!” I exclaimed. 

I now understood the reaction that Marius had. Characters appeared above the card like a hologram.

Along with the information, there was also a 3d projection of my body.

Wanting to touch the 3d projection, I lifted my right hand from the card. However, when I took my finger off the circle, the hologram disappeared.

“Ah!”

This time, I put my left thumb on the circle, and with my freed right hand touched the hologram.

I couldn’t touch the letters with my hand, but it was different for the image.

By moving my finger left or right, my projection would spin!

“What is this! It’s amazing! You don’t even need a mirror!!”

The image was very elaborate. When I looked at my back, I even saw the dirt on my buttocks from when I first came to this world.

“This is the first time I’ve seen someone pay attention to that. Usually, people first look at their skills or divine protection.”

When the staff lady said that, I was taken aback.

The employee was surprised as she said that, so even if she said might, it seemed like it was the more likely possibility.

It’s not like I didn’t have any hope for it, but I knew there was a possibility that the potential was not in the direction of what I wanted to do. Saying “I’ll try my best,” I put my adventurer card into my backpack.
