“Let go! Let go! Let go!

“You seem unwilling to answer.”

As Axel drew the sword with his other hand, the knight thought quickly and cried out.

“The inventory!”

“What?”

“If I could just get and sell that, I’ll be able to live comfortably for the rest of my life without having to do such crappy missions!”

“So, you tried to kill me in order to steal from me?”

“That, yes. Sorry! I was blind for a second! A mistake! L-Lo-Look, you’re young so you don’t know much about it, but you shouldn’t show such precious things to others, okay? Yes, I was actually just going to teach you that…

Axel raised the corner of his mouth at an angle.

“Do I look so easy?”

Flames burst out explosively. Soon, only a charred corpse was left. Roughly brushing the ashes from his hands, Axel looked up. Someone was standing there without attempting to hide their presence. A black cloak covered their whole body and the face, that peeked out from under a hood, was hidden by a white mask. They were short, barely reaching Axel’s chest.

Axel was unusually tall, he was half a span taller than most adult men even while he was still growing. But this unknown person was either a child or an exceptionally short woman, about the height of his chest. He didn’t feel any hostility.

‘They were trying to help me earlier.’

It seemed the outside intervention that changed the direction of Knight’s cutting wind was this person. Having judged that much, he opened his mouth.

“Who are you?”

* ♦ ♦ ♦ *

It was the first time Ariadne had ever seen a person burn to death right in front of her eyes. There was a vast distance between reading something in her books and seeing it with her own eyes. For a moment she forgot what she was here for.

[The Judge Who Never Sleeps asks you to imitate that daring.]

[Evergreen is angry with The Judge Who Never Sleeps.]

[Cornucopia is worried about you.]

[The Backwards Walking River is curious about the skills of this human that you have raised.]

Hearing the words that Pi quickly recited, she barely came to her senses. She wasn’t alone.

Thanks to her keeping her channel open, several of the great spirits were watching her.

Ariadne took a deep breath and raised her head. She fixed her gaze on Axel Valentine instead of the burnt body.

She could have sent an agent here to act in her stead. After all, Axel had no idea who Adrian Black was. But for various reasons, she came here herself. She was even willing to go through the struggle of convincing those who cared about her to allow her to come. The biggest reason was to see how Axel grew up. She was the only one who could compare the main character of the original story and the current Axel.

The 19-year-old protagonist was standing in front of her. Red eyes set under jet-black hair, a straight nose, sharp chin, slender forehead, fierce eyebrows, and a furrowed brow. It was such a handsome face that all she could do was admire it even though he was glaring at her with an expression that said, “What is this?”.

At this point in the novel, the main character was described as having a rough and haggard face giving the impression of exhaustion, but the main character in front of her was relaxed and confident. It was probably because Ariadne raised him, not Robert.

‘He’s all grown up. And he grew up so well.’

To be honest, he looked much better than looking exhausted. Wouldn’t a beast with glossy fur and full of confidence look better than a starving beast driven to the edge of a cliff? However, apart from liking how he looked, it was a problem that he looked so different from the original.

‘It’s good, but it’s not good.’

She got her words out as planned.

“I told you not to come back alive.”

Her boyish voice rose and Axel’s shoulders twitched.

“…Adrian Black?”

“Why did you come back alive, Axel Valentine?”

“Master.”

His red eyes were staring at her. Now she recited Robert Black’s original lines.

“If at all possible, I didn’t want to kill you with my own hands. You should have known this and just died.”

After saying that, she used a great spirit’s powers.

[Analysis complete. The Great Spirit, Pale Blue: Intimacy 30%, Interest 20%, Satisfaction 15%, Other Emotions 35%.]

[More than 50% of emotions are friendly, so it’s safe. Pale Blue’s spirit power may be used.]

Around them, a territory began to materialize. Depending on the skill of the Elementalist, the scope of the territory, the speed of implementation, the level of composition, and the amount of time a territory can be maintained all differ. Ariadne’s territory spread in an instant. It was a deep blue color that felt almost black. A chill struck at once with a quiet rumble. The territory was a bottomless, empty sea.

She saw Axel Valentine, who had suddenly fallen into the deep sea, holding his breath. Only the area around Ariadne was a warm grassy field, standing in the middle of the sea. Instead of water as deep and dark as the universe, beginning at the edge of the lawn, soft sunlight filled the space. It was an impossible sight, but Ariadne was used to it. The territory was an integration of a grass field created with power borrowed from Cornucopia, and a cold deep sea created with power borrowed from Pale Blue, the great spirit of The Northern Sea. It was tricky to create a complex territory by borrowing the power of multiple great spirits at the same time. However, if successful, it became an effective means of attack.

Axel’s exhaled breath turned into bubbles that surged upward. He would soon be out of breath as he felt the pressure of the water and his blood would turn as cold as ice.

Now he would realize that ‘Adrian Black’ was really trying to kill him. Then, like with the knight that attacked him earlier, he would immediately retaliate.

‘I have to subdue him right away and drive him to the very brink of death.’

This was one of the reasons that she came in person. The original Robert surrounded and attacked the protagonist with other chess pieces, but it was too dangerous to utilize other people.

‘In the original story, Axel killed more than half of the pieces while fighting to break through the blockade.’

But if it was with spirit skills, she could safely subdue the main character alone.

Ariadne looked at Axel.

‘I’m sure he’ll be out of breath soon?’

Axel had struggled a little, as if surprised, immediately after the territory was realized but now he floated motionless.

‘I can’t see his expression.’

It was light all around her but everywhere else was so dark that she couldn’t see his face well.

‘Pi.’

[Bioanalysis of life within the territory. The main character is not moving.]

‘Why isn’t he?’

[Unknown. Pi guesses that the protagonist is trying to think of a way to escape the crisis.]

He couldn’t use the power of fire in the deep sea, so he had to find another way. He knew very well that it was disadvantageous to fight a great elemental spirit within its own territory. Escaping the territory should be his priority. Or to secure his ability to breathe. Maybe he could somehow approach this attacking Elementalist and force close combat. Whatever the choice, he had to move. So why was she here alone?

‘He must have immediately remembered what to do in the water. He’s trained a lot, focusing on situations where he can’t use fire.’

Ariadne waited, trying to hide her nervousness. Axel didn’t move at all. His gaze felt warm. Somehow she got the feeling that he was observing her.

[Warning. The time limit at which humans can hold their breath has been reached.]

What? Ariadne was startled and she asked hastily.

‘Is he still fine? An elemental warrior can last much longer than a normal human.’

[The estimated time was based on an elemental warrior’s enhanced body. The protection of his fire elemental spirit is not very helpful for breathing underwater.]

She stared blankly at Axel. He still had her eyes on her but did not move at all. Then all of a sudden there was a bubble.

[Warning. Bioanalysis of life in the territory. The protagonist has experienced reflex breathing due to difficulties holding his breath.]

[If this condition persists, he will soon drown.]

[Approximately 1 minute left until drowning.]

‘No, no way, he believes in me that much? To the point where he would stand still even if I tried to kill him?’

In action, she told him to move rebel.

‘Fight back at me like you fought back at Robert, please.’

[10 seconds until drowning. 9 seconds, 8 seconds…]

There’s no way he couldn’t realize that he was going to die soon. So why didn’t he fight back? Why?

If Axel died like this, he would not be able to ‘return’. The main character didn’t awaken his ability to regress until after he set foot in the great labyrinth of Lavirintos, the old capital of Crete.

[5 seconds, 4 seconds, 3 seconds… ]

‘No!’

Ariadne quickly began to use her elemental powers. The watery depths which surrounded her disappeared like an illusion while the lawn widened to fill the territory. Vomiting water, Axel collapsed.

She almost ran to him, barely stopping herself.

‘Pi.’

[Bioanalysis of life in the territory. The ‘protagonist’ has fainted. His elemental spirits are active inside his body. He has started breathing regularly. Good physical condition.]

“Ha…”

Ariadne let out a sigh of relief and sat down hard.
