As Ataru approached the group of merchants and their guards, he could see that they were clearly on alert. A tense air hung over the area.

"I'm just here to introduce myself, I'm not going to approach you any closer than I have to."

At a certain distance, Ataru raises his hand to a visible position to show that he has nothing in his hands as he calls out.

"Well, if you don't have any hostile intentions, you are welcome to come a little further."

With the permission of the man who was guarding him, Ataru approached slowly, keeping his hands visible. And when he got close enough to talk, he stopped again to greet them where he could keep his distance.

"I'm sorry to bother you. I'm Ataru, and I'm going to be camping over there tonight. I'm going to set up a few traps to avoid monsters and bandits, so I thought I'd let you know in case you came by to greet us. Just in case."

Ataru didn't miss the fact that one of the guards twitched at Ataru's words as he spoke to make sure.

"Oh, are you an adventurer, too?"

At that moment, a man with a beard came out from behind a carriage and approached Ataru. The man had a friendly smile on his face.

"So, you are the merchant who hired them, huh? My name is Ataru, and I'm going to be camping in a remote area with my companion, so I came to say hello."

Ataru gave the merchant the same greeting as before. He might have heard him, but he wanted to be sure.

"Thank you for taking the time to do that. We'll be staying here tonight as well. Let's not interfere with each other."

The merchant's words were based on his judgment that unnecessary involvement would lead to trouble.

"That's good, we will try to stay away from this place, and it would be great if you could do the same."

They nodded at each other as if they understood each other, and Ataru turned on his heel to go back to Caro, thinking that there was nothing more to say.

Ataru did not look back, but he kept feeling the same stares on his back as the first time. It was the moment when the discomfort he had felt turned into certainty.

"...... I think there's more to this than meets the eye."

He said with a smirk on his face.

"Caro, I'm back. I'm done greeting them."

"Welcome back. ...... Was it okay?"

Caro asked Ataru, who had come back looking unchanged, with concern.

"Oh, maybe he'll come tonight. Something is fishy. The man who seems to be their employer, he's not just any merchant. The way he carried himself was not that of a merchant, and the way he looked at me was like he was probing me. His surroundings were like that, too."

Caro's eyes narrowed as she heard this.

"So, he's coming. Then let's get ready and wait."

Caro sensed that Ataru was expecting this when he prepared the trap. He also has his weapons ready.

"Oh, it's okay, there's a trap. For now, let's get some rest. It's impossible for them to beat us when they come here. ...... But we'll have to be careful with the traps."

In terms of ability, Ataru and Caro have judged that they are a lot better than them, but Ataru has a bad premonition of something, and has set up several other traps that are difficult to understand, in addition to the ones he had prepared at first.

"All that's left to do is pass the magic through this and ...... it's complete."

While Ataru nodded his head in satisfaction and completed his preparations, Caro finished preparing her meal.

"Ataru-sama, the dinner is ready, let's eat."

"Oh, thank you."

Although there were some suspicious people nearby, the two of them ate their dinner while chatting peacefully.

Night had fallen, the surroundings were quiet, and both Ataru and Caro had fallen asleep. There were several shadows approaching their camp.

"...... Hey, they said there was a trap set, is it safe?"

"Of course, that's what I'm here for, isn't it?"

It was the merchant's escort of adventurers, talking in hushed tones. As Ataru had predicted, they were on the move.

One of the men was leading the way, as he was good at scouting and trap searching.

"It looks like they've set a lot of traps ......, but I can take care of them."

He carefully disarmed the traps that Ataru had prepared. He was very familiar with the technique, and you could tell that he was used to doing this sort of thing.

"I can handle physical traps, but this one's a little tougher. ......"

At first, he was very proud of himself for disarming the traps, but then he frowned and stopped. It was a magical trap that he had found. The man's job is to search for and disarm traps, but he's not very good at magic, and this one was difficult to disarm.

"I'll take care of that. ...... I see, it's a magical trap, but the structure isn't complicated. I think I can handle this. ......"

The magician woman who came out next to him to push him away deciphered Ataru's trap and disarmed it easily.

"Good, they're preparing tents. ...... Maybe they have magic bags or something."

The men expected that, since Ataru and Caro had prepared a large-sized tent.

"But it's just the two of them, right? Even if they have a carriage and a magic bag, they don't have much to show for it, do they?"

But one of the men, who was more laid back than the rest, said in a dull tone. He seemed to think that if they were going to go to all the trouble, they should get something more delicious.

"Don't say that now. A party of two can afford a carriage, so they must have some money."

This was the main reason why the men wanted to attack Ataru and Caro. They thought that a young man with money and a little girl was a lukewarm match for them.

"....... I got it all unlocked. So, are we going to do it? Or not?"

While the men were discussing, the magician woman was working alone to disarm the traps. She shrugged her shoulders in disgust at the men's conversation and asked for final confirmation.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Anyway, we'll do ...... as we decided earlier."

When the leader said this, everyone nodded to each other and began to prepare their weapons at once.

"We'll jump out at the same time as always...... One, two, three!"

And with that signal, the adventurers jumped into Ataru's and Caro's tent at once.

“What!?”

But the tent was empty. There was nothing there but a plain tent. Everyone's face was stained with astonishment.

"What the hell is going on!? Isn't this where they're supposed to be camping? Or have they gone somewhere else? No, but the wagon is there......."

"...... Hey, what's this all about?"

The upset adventurers were suddenly startled by a voice from behind them, and everybody rushed out of the tent. There was a figure of Ataru and Caro standing there with expressionless faces.

"Oh, you guys! What the hell are you doing here?"

"No, no, no, you should answer my question first. ...... What is the meaning of this, what is it?"

In response to the man's question, Ataru repeated the same question in a more emphasized tone.

"Damn it, you guys, let's do this!"

But instead of answering the question, the adventurers were getting ready for battle, clicking their tongues together.
