Chapter 6:  Destroying The Bridge After Crossing The River (2)

He was strolling back towards his own library. While walking, he looked at the lanterns lit in the main courtyard not far ahead, took a deep breath, and finally managed to swallow the suffocating breath in his heart. Only then did he speed up his pace and strode forward.

When he entered the room, he saw his daughter sitting on the couch with her back to the crowd. Bi Wen was reaching out to hug her, but she twisted her chubby small body and broke away from her touch.

Ruan-shi was sitting aside and slowly tidying up the tangled cotton thread. From time to time, she would glance at the little girl, who was still obviously making trouble.

“Where’s Zhou gē er?” he asked casually.

“He went to the old lady’s place,” Bi Wen replied.

“Oh, I see.” Tang Song Nian waved Bi Wen to back off. Afterward, despite Xu Yun Yao’s struggles, he held her in his arms, smiled a little at her, and poked her nose. “What’s wrong with little Treasures?”

Seeing that her struggle was not helping her, Xu Yun Yao also gave up, only staring at him with bulging eyes. Her big, round watery eyes were full of complaints.

What’s the matter with you, old man? Why did you marry such a stupid woman? And if you already did so, why didn’t you take some time to teach her to be smarter?

Tang Song Nian poked her cheek. “Let your father poke and see if there will be a leak,” he said with a smile.

Xu Yun Yao unceremoniously slapped his evil hand.

Ruan-shi looked at her and shook her head. “Earlier, she threw my basket, and the cotton thread inside was completely messed up. After I said something to her and beat her, she  became very angry. At such an early age, her temper is already so short! I don’t know from whom she inherited it?”

Xu Yun Yao angrily screamed at her, “No… Ah, baa…”

After speaking the word “No”, she vomited a few saliva bubbles but could not utter the two words she wanted to say, which made her feel ashamed, annoyed, and wronged.

“Now you see it! I asked her not to be naughty in the future, and this is her answer.” Ruan-shi wiped her mouth, somewhat helpless.

Xu Yun Yao was so angry that she clapped Tang Song Nian’s big hand around her waist and shouted angrily, “No, no, no…”

Tang Song Nian saw the little girl’s face flushed with anger as he suddenly thought deeply. “No? It was not Bao Ya’s fault?”

Hearing this, Xu Yun Yao’s screams came to an abrupt end as if her face full of injustice seemingly found a place to vent. She quickly turned around in his arms, pulled his sleeve using her small hands, and whimpered with full of grievance, “No, no, not…”

Tang Song Nian completely understood her meaning. He pinched the little girl’s face and rubbed his head on her melon cheeks. “Father knows that although Bao Ya didn’t turn over Mother’s basket, she still wronged Bao Ya.”

Yes, yes, that’s it, that’s it, that’s right!

Xu Yun Yao nodded crazily, her big eyes flickering. For the first time in her life, she felt that the old man looked so pleasing to the eye.

Looking at the little girl’s pursed lips, rounded cheeks with little dimples, and eyes staring at him, Tang Song Nian’s heart became soft, and he couldn’t help but press this lovable little girl into his arms for a moment.

.

Ruan-shi naturally heard the dialogue between the father and daughter and asked with some hesitation, “Is it really me who misunderstood?”

“It seems that this is indeed the case.” Tang Song Nian passed his daughter to his wife and looked at the little girl pouting her mouth and gazing away from her mother. He rubbed her little head with a smile.

Ruan-shi remained silent, stopped whatever she was doing, and peered at her daughter in awkwardness. Eventually, she could not help but laugh. She gently held the girl’s hand with a smile on her lips. “Since Bao Ya has been wronged, can Mother make amends to Bao Ya?”

Xu Yun Yao sneaked a look at her and quickly turned her head, her whole person hiding in the arms of Tang Song Nian.

Just, for the sake of your sincerity, I’m not going to care about you.

It was rare for his precious daughter to take the initiative to stick close to him. Tang Song Nian was overjoyed and hugged the little girl until he could not bear it. Finally, he didn’t resist and kissed the little girl on the face.

Xu Yun Yao turned stiff and immediately blew up as she slapped away the handsome face in front of her. Shortly afterward, her small body rushed into Ruan-shi’s arms.

This rude old man is really annoying!

Tang Song Nian, who was rejected by his daughter, laughed and sighed. “Little villain, really, destroy the bridge after crossing the river!”

Xu Yun Yao hugged Ruan-shi’s neck. Her face was glued to her as she pretended not to hear him.

Knowing that this time it was a loss of “unspeakable words”, Xu Yun Yao vowed to learn to speak faster. As for the culprit who had framed her, that concubine Shu said that she had already remembered it deep in her heart, and there would be revenge sooner or later.

She yawned, smacked her lips, and turned her little ass over.

Ruan-shi tucked her in a thin quilt and patted her on the back. Only then did she ask her helpless husband, “You brothers meeting today was for what? Why do you look to be in a bad mood?”

Tang Song Nian smiled reluctantly. “I really can’t hide anything from you.”

After the pause, he briefly told her about the incident today, but in the end, he said painfully, “In those days, the deposed emperor of the former dynasty forcibly recruited men aged 18 or above into the army to fend off surging insurgents from all over the country. At that time, only Eldest Brother was 18 years old in the family. But mother… in the end, pushed me out at the age of 14.”

In all parts of the country, there was a violent rebel armed force wreaking havoc in the country. The army of the imperial court had fought and lost many times, and the number of deserters was even more numerous. Everyone knew that when the imperial court conscripted this time, nine out of ten would never return.
