My Life As A Salamander

Chapter 9 - Sudden Changes

We stared at one another for some time. Finally she spoke. " Do you know what you are?" She kept staring... I shook my head. I didn't know. Did anyone? After a little more banter of me answering yes and no questions she went to the nightstand. She pulled open the drawer and pulled out a book made of what looked to be leather. The books front cover had thin lines covering its surface in a wierd way. ( Is that a circle) I thought. The only thing about the circle was that it was filled with strange drawings and symbols. Some were of a man riding a beast. Others were of a dragon breathing flames with a person next to it. Sam suddenly opened the cage and pulled me out with a gloved hand. Her other hand laid the book on the table on a chapter filled with what looked to be a magic circle and scribbles. I looked at her in confusion. She looked at me and began to say something. I couldn't understand. My mind started to feel like it was getting stuffed full of cotton, then the feeling subsided bringing instead a massive amount of pain to my head (Ahhhhhhh!!!!) I hissed at the pain. I felt a burning sensation on my head. And she suddenly dropped me. I hit the floor with a thud and quickly ran to the flames. ( She can't get me in here hahahahahaha!) I looked at the metal grate below me which was shiny enough for me to see my reflection. On my head I saw a small mark it looked like a thumb print except it had a fang symbol in the middle. " Ahhh....." Sam said. I looked up and saw her clutching her hand with sweat running down her face. She let go of her hand slowly as her breathing slowed down. She had a mark on her hand. It was a pitch black lizard biting it's own tail. But as I tried to look closer it changed a little. The lizard had six legs! That was me on her hand! ( What did she just do!?!) I thought. She looked at me very quickly. "I did a contract spell just now. This way I can understand you when you get strong enough. For now all I can know is how you feel." She quickly reached for the tongs by the fireplace and grabbed me out with them. Ironically my self ignition ability makes me still on fire without needing to ignite myself so I was still on fire when she pulled me out.

" From this day forward. I'll call you Ignis. Because of the fire you seem to love." Sam took me and put me back in the cage. " I can't have you running around causing a fire. So stay here in the meantime till I find something better for you." She placed the cage a little closer to the fire and went to her bed to sleep. Reluctantly I looked around and started gnawing the cage again. By the time I was done my iron body skill was lvl 4 and there wasn't a speck of rust to be seen on my cage where I could reach it. My body was heavier and more silver gray like iron but I still maintained my red l.u.s.ter with my gold horns. With that over with I finally felt tired enough to sleep. So I ignited myself to warm up the stones beneath me. After they were sufficiently warm I laid down and passed out.

...

With a jolt I woke up. My cage was swinging everywhere as Sam was hauling it up and out the door in a hurry. ( Where are we going in such a hurry!) I hissed at her in irritation. As though she understood, Sam said. " Pipe down. We're heading to the training area. You need to get some more power to you so others don't bully you so easily." I shivered a little at the thought of training. (What is she going to do to me?)

The hall Sam was walking down was made of what looked like stone. The only exception to it's look was that it had bright blue lines running along it. The lines lit the place in a mystical way. After about 5 minutes of walking I saw a light at the end of the hall. As we exited the sun blinded me. (It's been a while) I thought. I looked around. We had walked into a large arena looking area. the walls were made of a dark stone covered in runes with people everywhere with different creatures. Some creatures I had only heard of in myths. A gryphon, a tiny dragon, and finally a huge minotaur. This is going to be interesting. There was a sudden lurch as Sam put me on a table off to the side. I managed to hold on with my tiny claws through the bars. She sighed as she quickly looked around and slowly opened the door to my cage. "Time for a little work out for you." She said as she reached into the cage pulling me out and setting me on the ground. It was warm and the ground was made of a tan colored sand. ( Crap) was all I thought as the dragon I just mentioned looked over and spat a huge flame at me.
