Pirates For The Mainland

Chapter 9 - Key - 9

With her one obstacle out of the way, Nog made it to the building where Redstone did business. It was a tall thing that was mostly comprised of floor after floor of office workers crunching numbers and balancing books. Redstone's business stretched far and wide into the main islands of mankind, but enjoyed living closer to the border in Mercidian.

Nog didn't enjoy business types. The smell of the building, the look of their neatly pressed clothes, the proper nature of their talk, and their focus on work at all times bothered her to no end. As she stood in the elevator waiting for her twentieth floor to come, she had to share it with a few of the drones.

Fortunately for Nog, the little nobodies of the office would not talk to her. In their eyes, she looked like a villain of the underworld. Nog was a character living outside the civilized world to them and it would mean nothing but trouble if they attempted to make small talk. The captain felt their apprehension and had a little fun, staring hard at them with an angry face and watching them cower until they would exit on their floor.

When the nineteenth floor came to let a worker off, the drone turned to look at Nog with curiosity as the villain had not gotten off yet. When the captain noticed his prying eyes she looked at him with a deadly stare and he quickly retreated into the forest of cubicles. Nog was glad to have a little enjoyment on her way up. Her visit with Redstone would certainly be anything but fun.

When the doors opened to twenty, Nog was met with the office of the big boss. The entire floor was made into an enormous personal space for the money-hungry fat man. Large animals preserved and stuffed as statues, paintings of immeasurable value, sculptures, precious artifacts, and even a display case of beast tribe bones were scattered about. The floor was covered in a fancy carpet of swirling colors and complicated patterns that would squish when she walked upon it.

Nog grimaced at the place, as she did every time. She hated such a shameless display of greed but her crewmates would argue that she would probably have such a display if she could. The captain mostly hated that it wasn't hers.

A straight path from the elevator led to the large wooden desk of Redstone. Its excessive use of gold trim and its many random souvenirs along the top made Nog more irritated the closer she got to it. The fat man sat in his big chair facing away from her until she got close. He was a disgusting thing of false manners and gold rings wrapped in a red suit. His balding head was always combed in a way to try and compensate with a heavy dose of grease. He was like a dirty pig that you'd never want to eat.
