Chapter 2: What’s going on here? (2)

‘I guess he’s gone really crazy.’

Guchil (口七) looked at Chungmyung with a serious look on his face.

‘Did he go crazy from being beaten?’

He might’ve been hit too hard.

The boss is usually the type to just beat up people a bit, but he really beat him up today like he was really determined. Even if it was during a dog day, he wouldn’t have been beaten like that.

Didn’t those guys that would usually stop the boss not even think of stopping him, overwhelmed by that intensity? And if it’s a person, a normal one would’ve been bedridden by now, but…

“So, you’re saying I’m a beggar?”

‘Your body’s fine, but your mind’s gone?’

A beggar’s asking if he’s a beggar.

Has there been any other beggar like him?

There’s no doubt that this guy’s somewhat weird today. No, really weird.

He always goofs off, so he did think he’d be heavily punished some day. He just got caught because today wasn’t his lucky day, but the way he loafed around was the same as usual. If not today, then he would’ve been beat up hard someday.

The beggar hut’s ironclad rule is that if you can’t beg with your own hands to feed yourself, then you’ll either starve to death or get beaten to death.

When a dog or a human gets beaten up, after a long time, they’ll come to their senses. This was normal.

But that wasn’t the case for the person in front of Guchil.

“I’ve really been living in this kinda place as a beggar? No way.”

“…You blind or something?”

“Huh?”

“It’s not so hard to figure out what you are from looking at your clothes.”

Chungmyung lowered his head. He saw tattered clothes put together with all kinds of cloth. Tattered clothes that’d be called clothes when worn, but he didn’t know if it’d be called that when thrown away.

A normal person would reply with a nod to him, but Chungmyung didn’t know when to give up.

“I don’t have a name?”

Guchil let out a long sigh.

“Where have you seen a beggar with a name? We just make up whatever. You’re Chosam (草三).”

“…Sounds like the name of a beggar.”

See? He didn’t look so well.

“Why a beggar of all things? Why this kind of beggar?”

“…”

“About sixteen years old?”

“How would a beggar know his age?”

“I guess so.”

It wasn’t just one or two strange things.

From the way he spoke to his actions, everything was different. It’s hard to believe it was a change caused by a severe blow to the head. On top of that, he’s now asking me like he doesn’t know anything?

“Then, what year is it now?”

“…I’ve never seen a beggar ask about the date. You think I’m a beggar who counts the days?”

“Truly like a beggar.”

Guchil raised a hand, rubbing his eyes. The life of a beggar consisted of always being tired and hungry, but at this moment, he felt even more tired than usual.

“Then, lemme ask you one thing.”

“…You’ve been asking things this whole time.”

“You’re not the Heavenly Demon?”

Guchil narrowed his eyes.

“You said something about the Heavenly Demon earlier, but why’re you suddenly trying to look for him?”

“Answer me first.”

“Okay. Who doesn’t know about the Heavenly Demon? He’s the Great Demonic Leader who died a hundred years ago.”

“What?”

“The Great Demonic Leader…”

At that moment, Chosam rushed to Guchil and grabbed him firmly by the collar.

“It’s been a hundred years since the Heavenly Demon died? It’s been a hundred years now? A hundred yeaaaaaars?”

“…”

Looks like he’s really gone crazy.

“Like I said,”

“Not a single inch of me is a beggar.”

“What’s the point of me lying to you!? This weak jerk.”

Glaring, Chungmyung smiled and soon released his hand grabbing Guchil by the collar, who had shock on his face. He then suddenly stood there, scratching his head.

‘He’s definitely crazy.’

That was the only thing he could think of when he saw his face. He looked delirious and out of his mind. That was the first time Guchil found out that a person’s face could express so many types of ‘embarrassment.’

“You said a hundred years, right?”

“Should I say it again?”

“…This is crazy.”

Chungmyung raised his head, looking dispirted, and looked up.

He figured he’d be somewhat cheered up if he stared at the blue sky, but all he could see was the ceiling of a mud hut. It was as dark as Chungmyung’s heart right now.

“A hundred years has passed, huh?”

The now irritated Guchil suddenly shouted.

“Why have you been repeating what I said like a mynah!? A hundred years have passed! The suicide squad of the center of moorim fought against the Heavenly Demon at the peak of the Hundred Great Mountains, and eventually chopped off his head, and then… That’s right! Like I said, it’s been a hundred years since the Great Mountain Bloody War (大山血事)!”

“…Okay, I get it.”

That’s what’s driving me crazy.

Chungmyung sadly looked at Guchil.

‘Actually, it might’ve been better if I didn’t know anything.’

The one who excitedly beat up Chungmyung a while ago was a first rank from the Beggars’ Sect. Which means that the guy in front of him’s also taken a step into the Beggars’ Sect.

Aren’t they usually called the Hundred Thousand Beggars’ Sect?

But the Beggars’ Sect isn’t the richest in the world, so there’s no way they could house and feed all hundred thousand sect members. The Beggars’ Sect is very famous for being the best of the beggar groups, but there’s a limit to their funds.

But even within the Hundred Thousand Beggars’ Sect, most of them were simple beggars, just like Guchil in front of him right now. The Beggars’ Sect gave these no-rank beggars (無結丐), or in other words, beggars with no knots, names, and treated them appropriately.

Which means that even beggars who stroll around the city are more knowledgeable on information about the moorim than most people.

That makes them pretty credible. There’s no questioning that even he knows how, at that time, the death squad consisting of practitioners from every sect went up to the Great Mountain.

“Sigh. This is crazy. A hundred years.”

Five years is enough time for landscapes to change.

He now had to accept it. That he was reborn again, borrowing somebody else’s body.

But…

‘If possible, why not let me be born right after I died?’

If a hundred years has passed, all the people he knew would be dead. Of course, even if a hundred years hasn’t passed, all the fairly intimate friends he had mostly died on the Great Mountain, but still, this situation doesn’t really make it any different, right?

No matter how much of a martial artist Chungmyung was, there’s no way he could be friends with just fellow martial artists. Among those he knew were merchants and civilians. But after a hundred years, there’s no possibility of any of them being alive.

He felt like he was all alone in the world.

‘Well, no matter what happens, it’s always the same. Then, Mount Hua as well…’

“Oh? Hold on, Mount Hua!”

Chungmyung suddenly bounced to his feet, and when he shouted, Guchil closed his eyes like he was resigned.

He wasn’t surprised anymore.

“Mount Hua! What happened to Mount Hua?”

“What’re you talking about?”

“I said, what happened to Mount Hua!?”

“Mount Hua?”

“Yep!”

“What’s Mount Hua?”

“…Huh?”

Chungmyung’s eyes opened wide.

He doesn’t know Mount Hua? This beggar from the Beggars’ Sect?

“S-Stop messing around. So, what’s happened to Mount Hua Sect now?”

“Mount Hua Sect?”

Guchil tilted his head.

He didn’t know?

He doesn’t know?

Mount Hua Sect?

“Y-You don’t know about Mount Hua Sect, one of the Nine Great Sects? Hey, you…”

“Nine Great Sects? What’re you talking about? Mount Hua Sect isn’t among the Nine Great Sects.”

“…It’s not?”

“Shaolin. Wudang. Zhongnan. Diancang, Kongtong, Qingcheng, Emei, Hainan, Kunlun. Beggars’ Sect. That’s all the 10 sects.”

“H-Hainan? Those island bumpkin bastards are in the Nine Great Sects? N-No, hold on, that’s not important. Mount Hua was removed from the Nine Great Sects?”

Guchil let out a deep sigh.

‘Should I call a doctor?’

He was afraid he would do something. He’s definitely out of his mind.

“Mount Hua, you said Mount Hua’s removed from the Nine Great Sects? W-Wait, let’s say that’s possible! But, you dunno Mount Hua Sect? Even if a rich man goes broke, they can last for three years*! A beggar bastard from the Beggars’ Sect doesn’t know about Mount Hua Sect?”

If he had the balls to call the guy in front of him a beggar bastard, he wouldn’t starve to death wherever he goes. But, he might be beaten to death.

Now, Chungmyung altogether stuck to Guchil, grabbed his shoulders and shook him.

“That’s impossible? That’s impossible, right?”

Guchil’s head was weakly emptied out.

“You really don’t know Mount Hua? You don’t know Mount Hua Sect? Mount Hua?”

“…Mount Hua.”

“Yeah! Mount Hua!”

Guchil tilted his head.

“Come to think of it, I think I’ve heard that there’s a sect like that in Shaanxi Province.”

Chungmyung’s eyes were wide open.

“That’s right! It is in Shaanxi! Shaanxi’s Mount Hua Sect.”

“But as far as I know, it’s declining?”

“…What’d you say?”

He couldn’t breathe.

“I don’t really know if Mount Hua Sect’s one of the Nine Great Sects, but I’ve heard stories of how some great, noble Hwa something sect completely went broke because of the Righteous-Evil War. I dunno the exact details. If you wanna know more, you’ll have to ask the top…”

What’s he saying? Mount Hua’s broke?

Mount Hua? Mount Hua’s broke, he says?

“This beggar’s talking nonsense.”

Guchil looked up at the ceiling with slightly damp eyes.

He already told him everything he knew, but all he got in return were insults. This is why you shouldn’t keep black-haired animals*.

“No! I don’t believe it!”

Chungmyung shoved Guchil away, and jumped to his feet.

“I’m gonna go check it for myself!”

Seeing Chungmyung run outside, Guchil shouted.

“Hey! If you don’t properly beg until evening, the boss’ll beat you to death! Stop wasting your time, and get to work!”

But Chungmyung turned a deaf ear to Guchil’s words, and left.

“…Seriously, why’s that jerk like this today?”

Guchil tilted his head, unable to understand the sudden change in Chungmyung.

* * *

“…Wow.”

Is this what the face of a merchant who lost his entire fortune looked like?

Sitting in a corner of the street, Chungmyung’s face was truly despondent.

At first, he thought, ‘What would a no-rank know?’

But now that he thought about it, the first-generation and second-generation disciples of Mount Hua all perished in the war called the Great Mountain Bloody War, so it’s possible for Mount Hua Sect to decline.

It’s also possible that they were ousted from the Great Nine Sects in the process.

But no matter how many times he thought about it, Mount Hua who looked down on the world could become a sect that even a beggar’s never heard of in just a hundred years!

A sect that even a beggar doesn’t know of kinda sounds…

He thought, ‘Anyways, it might just be this beggar that doesn’t know, so others might know of Mount Hua.’

But no matter who he grabbed, it was all the same.

-Mount Hua? You talking about that mountain in Shaanxi?

-Mount Hua Sect? There’s a sect in Mount Hua?

-I’ve never heard of that sect before.

-Just where are you touching my sleeve, you beggar bastard. You wanna die?

Oh, ignore that last one.

No one.

No one knew.

“Does this even make any sense?”

What kind of sect was Mount Hua?

There were many sword sects (劍門) in the world, but there weren’t any sword sects as famous as Mount Hua. It was a bit vague to say it’s the most famous sword sect in the world, but along with Wudang and the Namgoong Clan, no one could disagree that it was one of the three most famous sects in the world.

But no one knew?

“Sigh…”

At least there was this most positive reaction.

-Mount Hua Sect? I think I’ve heard of it. Wasn’t that the most famous sword sect back in the day? But I heard they suffered from the Heavenly Demon, and went completely broke? They’re still around?

Completely broke? That Mount Hua?

“What nonsense.”

It’d be more realistic if the imperial palace caught on fire and the emperor fled with nothing but a slip on.

Mount Hua went broke! Mount Hua!

The last image of his senior brother Sect Leader wavered in front of him.

The always laughing, ‘ho ho’ with a gentle face senior brother Sect Leader laying down with an eerie expression on his face that was hard to describe.

‘Instead, I’m glad I’m the one who lived again.’

If senior brother Sect Leader was alive and heard this wonderful news, he might have vomited blood and died again by now.

“No, no!”

Chungmyung got on his feet.

“I have to personally see it with my own eyes!”

No matter how much it’s declined, it’s Mount Hua that’s existed for hundreds of years. Chungmyung could never believe it until he sees it with his very own eyes.

“I’m going to Mount Hua!”

Go! To see!

Chungmyung’s eyes began to burn.

That moment was the beginning of the huge event that disturbed the ever-peaceful kangho.

Dog day – Referring to hot days of summer. For some reason, it’s also used in a phrase in Korean to mean that someone was beat up to a pulp. Not sure why…Guchil/Chosam – So, I believe these are ‘beggar-like names’ because of how inelegant the hanja used are. Guchil’s name uses the hanja for mouth and seven, while Chosam’s is grass and three. A little tidbit, the hanja used for Chung means blue, while for the mun in Chungmun is gate (or opening, but different combinations mean different things), gong in Chunggong is sky, and myung in Chungmyung is bright (or light, I guess). Their names definitely sound much better, a little more poetic or it gives off a certain imagery.Great Demonic Leader – one of the few times not having hanja gave me a headache, but the most likely is 大魔頭, which would be Great Demonic Head, but well, the head just means someone at the top, so I just opted for Leader.Nine Great Sects – For some reason… I don’t know if it’s the same in Chinese novels, BUT THEY SAY NINE WHEN THERE’S ACTUALLY TEN. WHY. So for clarification on the only other sect name here that we rarely heard of: Hainan. This one is less commonly seen in martial arts novels, but it’s based in Hainan, which is the southernmost province in China.Even if a rich man goes broke, they can last for three years – Exactly what it’s trying to say. Rich people can survive for a while even if they go broke. A Korean proverb.Keeping a black-haired animal – another Korean proverb to mean that someone you were nice to is ungrateful after. Some blog post translated this as ‘never bite the hand that feeds you,’ though I think it’s more of the reverse POV, but it’s still along the same lines.大山血事 – The last hanja means thing, so literally, Great Mountain Bloody Thing, but well, sounds better to change it into war. This is the name of the war where Chungmyung died.無結丐 – So, last time, I mentioned how in the Beggars’ Sect, they use pouches/bags to show their ranks, but it looks like in Korean novels, they use knots. So in the Beggars’ Sect, there’s a rank below the first rank where they have no knots, and I’m just gonna translate it at no-rank. Little tidbit, according to a blog post I found that has information about the Beggars’ Sect, the lowest rank is taken up for 3 years, and only when you’ve proven yourself and achieved things will you be promoted to a single-knot or a first-rank, I guess. Maybe I should just translate them as nth-knot.Hundred Thousand Beggars’ Sect – Another name for the Beggars’ Sect because they supposedly had a hundred thousand sect members. Will be changing den > hut now, also cause I finally thought to look up the hanja lol.

I love his interactions with Guchil, very funny. Hopefully there wasn’t any weird parts or translations to this chapter, lemme know if there’s any.
