TL: Moonlit

After chatting for a while, Feng Kuan finally brought the conversation back to the main topic. He asked tentatively, “Where are you planning to go?”

“To the imperial capital,” Lin Hanchuan replied.

“The imperial capital… The imperial capital is good,” Feng Kuan said. He knew there was no room left for persuasion, but he didn’t feel disappointed. “With your abilities, even in the city where talents gather, you will surely shine.”

“But…” Feng Kuan glanced at Rong Ziping in the corner and leaned closer to Lin Hanchuan, lowering his voice, “The imperial capital is crowded with people, and it’s a mix of good and bad. Now that the country’s functions are paralyzed, those families that were once suppressed by the country are showing signs of resurgence.”

This naturally included the Rong family.

Feng Kuan was worried that if they treated the Rong family as a scapegoat and offended the young master of the Rong family, they might suffer in the imperial capital.

Lin Hanchuan understood Feng Kuan’s concern, and indeed, he wasn’t wrong to worry.

In the original text, there were still military forces present initially. However, soon after, due to the virus in everyone’s body, once the immune system was compromised, they would be infected immediately. Sometimes, even a common cold could suddenly turn into becoming a zombie, and the number of zombies was overwhelming, making it hard to defend against.

Before the apocalypse, the country could still control and prevent infections. However, various aristocratic families had always been unwilling to be suppressed by the country, unable to plunder and accumulate wealth as freely as foreign countries. They possessed special privileges beyond the reach of the government, and while the government was busy suppressing zombies and assisting civilians, those families madly recruited people with abilities to strengthen themselves.

As time passed, the sacrifices made by the soldiers to save civilians were overshadowed by the actions of these families, who effortlessly saved a few people with abilities. The families became more powerful, and the government became the weaker party.

In the original ending, the protagonist and the love interest each established independent bases, shining alongside other family bases. People knew about the existence of the five major bases, but they were unaware of the existence of the government.

Lin Hanchuan’s eyes turned cold. He was also a businessman, but at this critical moment of humanity’s life and death, those people were still fighting for their own interests, ignoring the safety of civilians and the future of humanity, just for a bit of insignificant gain… These people were capitalists who had turned black-hearted, not worthy of being called businessmen.

“I have a plan,” Lin Hanchuan said firmly.

After learning about these events, Lin Hanchuan decided that he would never allow families like the Rong family to rise above the country’s authority. Only when the country was unified could it command the greatest strength to confront the apocalypse.

Feng Kuan didn’t try to persuade them further and changed the topic, saying, “We’ve drawn away some of the zombies from the city this time. We’ve received a new mission to rescue more people in the city… I hope we can meet again.”

In the apocalypse, there was no certainty of tomorrow, but no matter what, staying alive was the most important thing.

Lin Hanchuan raised his cup and clinked it with Feng Kuan’s. They used tea instead of alcohol, toasting to these soldiers who were fearless in the face of life and death, as they were the light that dispelled the darkness.

This meal was the most relaxed one for everyone since the apocalypse began.

After finishing the meal and heading back to rest, as Lin Hanchuan passed by the couple who had falsely accused him, he remained expressionless, but the two of them trembled in fear.

They knew they had done something guilty, and whenever they saw the person they owed, they felt anxious, fearing that he would retaliate against them. They never expected that Lin Hanchuan would take no action afterward, but this instead scared them even more.

“Is he planning to wait until Captain Feng and the others leave and then send us to feed the zombies?” The woman clung tightly to her husband’s shoulder, scared out of her wits by her own imagination.

The man trembled as well, faltering, “N-no, it’s impossible. Captain Feng is a soldier; they wouldn’t… let us be harmed like that.”

He said this without any confidence. After the apocalypse, no one knew if the soldiers were still the same as they used to be.

Countless people changed dramatically after the apocalypse, both men and women. They used to be a couple that everyone recognized as happy—healthy parents, a clever son, and they never argued. But when the apocalypse came, their love, maintained by the same secret, could not withstand the threat of death. They witnessed their elderly parents turning into zombies, and at the same time, their son developed a fever. Terrified that their son might also turn into a zombie, they locked him in the same room as the elderly people who had already become zombies.

Unexpectedly, their son only had a fever and didn’t turn into a zombie, but they ended up feeding him alive to the zombies, bitten to death by their own hands, crying and calling out for mommy and daddy.

As they listened from outside the door, the couple felt pain and regret, tears streaming down their faces. But they didn’t dare to open the door to kill the two feeble elderly zombies; instead, they pressed against the door, allowing their son’s voice to gradually fade away.

After being saved by Feng Kuan and the others, they blamed each other, as if they were not a loving couple who never fought before. It was only when their shared secret resurfaced, even threatening their lives, that they were once again bound together.

“Honey, let’s escape,” the woman didn’t believe that Feng Kuan would risk offending people with abilities for the sake of two ordinary individuals like them. She also didn’t believe that Tu Ji, whose life they had ruined, wouldn’t seek revenge. Tearfully, she said, “If we stay here, we’ll be killed sooner or later. It’s better to escape and have a chance at survival.”

The man’s gaze flickered several times. He thought about Lin Hanchuan’s immensely powerful lightning-based ability and remembered Feng Kuan’s friendly attitude towards Lin Hanchuan. With determination in his heart, he said, “Once they fall asleep, we’ll run!”

Staying here was definitely a death sentence, but leaving, though dangerous, would at least give them a few more days to live.

The couple exchanged a determined glance, their eyes filled with the same resolve. Just like before, they trusted each other and were deeply in love.

In the late night, everyone had fallen asleep. The couple silently crossed over the sleeping figures on the ground, careful not to wake anyone up. They reached the doorway where the person on watch was boredly gazing into the distance. Upon hearing their movements, the guard immediately turned around and asked, “Who’s there?”

“It’s us, just going outside to use the restroom,” the woman forced a fawning smile and whispered softly.

The guard glanced at them, “It’s dangerous outside. Come back quickly.”

The couple thanked the guard repeatedly and hurried into the darkness. Little did they know that the guard behind them pressed the intercom button and said, “Two people went outside to ‘hunt the cannon,’ not sure when they’ll be back. Let them pass… They think about this stuff whenever things get a bit easier. It’s really…”

The person responsible for patrolling in the distance clicked their tongue in amazement, “Their appetites don’t wane even in such times. They’re well-fed and already want to ‘hunt the cannon1.’ Our ancestors said it right…”

The couple hurriedly ran as if they were being chased by something dreadful. They had no idea how long they ran, but they felt like they had left the village’s perimeter. Finally, they stopped, gasping for breath.

Both the couple, who hadn’t exercised in a long time, were panting heavily, feeling the excitement of regaining their freedom. “We didn’t expect it to be so easy.”

“That Tu Ji idiot, always arrogant because of his good grades, always playing the hero to save the beauty. He acted like he was in a TV drama. Serves him right for offending wealthy people and being made the scapegoat!”

With just the two of them present, their malevolence poured out. The words they had repeated countless times took on a new sensation when spoken aloud again.

While the couple indulged in the pleasure of insulting others, they suddenly heard a strange hissing sound very close by. The next moment, the endless torrent of words was halted as the man was fiercely bitten on the neck by something. The woman screamed in shock, wanting to crawl back, but she bumped into another zombie behind her.

This time, no one came to save them.

The next day, Feng Kuan was surprised to find two people missing. Upon knowing who the two people were and hearing the words of the guard on duty, he quickly understood what had happened.

The couple judged Lin Hanchuan’s character based on their own malicious mindset, thinking that he was equally despicable, so they were scared away.

“Hopefully, they’re still alive.” Feng Kuan casually said in front of his subordinates, not showing much concern. He didn’t send anyone to look for them and simply shared the good news with Lin Hanchuan when he arrived.

Lin Hanchuan was taken aback. He hadn’t thought about revenge, but people who had done wicked things tend to overthink and end up being destroyed by their own wickedness.

These two middle-aged individuals, who were out of shape and lacked physical training, might not survive for more than three days outside the protection of the military.

Lin Hanchuan didn’t pay much attention to them at all. He knew that this matter would pass by like an earworm, and after a simple breakfast with the two groups, they bid farewell to each other.

One team returned to the city, while the other headed toward the direction of the imperial capital. Their paths were opposite, but they had the same destination.

Compared to an unreliable small team, most people trusted the military more. The majority of those who were rescued chose to follow Feng Kuan, leaving only a few individuals with Lin Hanchuan’s team.

Lin Hanchuan didn’t feel disappointed; on the contrary, he felt relieved.

Cheng Jizhou leaned against Lin Hanchuan’s chest. In his childhood, he had never been hugged so frequently, but now that he had grown up, he was being hugged so often. However, he didn’t feel uncomfortable; instead, he felt a unique warmth.

Having been injected with the virus, his body temperature was extremely low. But now, he was embraced by another person’s warmth, and the scorching heat didn’t make him feel burning; instead, he felt warmth.

He affectionately leaned against Lin Hanchuan’s shoulder, his nose facing the pulsing artery on the neck. As blood flowed through the artery, a scent that ordinary humans couldn’t smell spread in waves.

It smells really nice… Cheng Jizhou had never known before that he could be so fascinated by scents.

“Don’t move around,” Lin Hanchuan pressed Cheng Jizhou’s head, which was rubbing against his neck like a little puppy.

With his gentle and steady voice close to his ears, Cheng Jizhou’s ears, which had lost most of their sensations, felt tingly and numb. He rubbed his ears and obediently stopped moving.

Not far away, Rong Ziping gazed at them with an indiscernible expression.

Ring Ziping couldn’t believe that he could be reborn, and the jade pendant he had been wearing around his neck had turned into a space. He possessed spatial abilities now, no longer an ordinary person. Moreover, Tu Ji was not dead.

For a moment, Rong Ziping’s nose felt a little sour. Apart from his family, Tu Ji, who had treated him the best, had not died. This moved Rong Ziping more than anything else.

But… who was that blue-eyed mixed-blood child? Why hadn’t he seen him in his previous life?
