Soul Land: The Savage Star

Chapter 5: regretful mother

Facing each other with ten meters separating them, Feng and Beibei activated their spirits. As they both transformed, their looks and the fact that they were new here attracted quite a bit of attention for both students and teachers. As their spirits were quite peculiar, they all were astonished seeing the appearance of the twins.

Beibei's lengthened claws, white fur, and increased size and stature were enough to make them gasp as he looked fierce. On the other hand, Feng's white hair and pupilless glowing white eyes made them exclaim as he looked holy but none of them ever saw something similar.

The faint pressure Feng exuded as a real spirit master made Beibei a little less confident about his chances to win. He then once again reminded Feng not to use his spirit ring as he dashed towards him.

Once Feng was within his strike zone, Beibei slashed at him with his right claw. Not knowing how to defend a slash, Feng just lunged back as he didn't want to experience the sharpness of Beibei's claws. Beibei continued to slash at Feng with his claws as the latter kept retreating. Annoyed at the unfairness of Beibei having actual weapons, Feng diced under the last of Beibei's slash.

His attempt, although rewarding as he was able to uppercut his brother got him multiple claw marks on his back. In fact, seeing the claws connecting to Feng's back, the teacher spectating from a distance all thought that they would provoke a serious injury as the dive didn't make Feng dodge the claw at all.

On the contrary, his dive made the slash, that would have barely scratched him become an almost deadly one. Feng's punch though was very powerful, more than anyone would expect from a new spirit master. Beibei was not only ko-ed by it, but he was also even sent flying three meters.

Seeing what he had done to his brother, Feng, whose face was paling by the second, lunged at Beibei to support his head and try to wake him up while activating his spirit ring to heal him. His strength and resilience were always remarkable but he didn't think it would become this exaggerated after becoming a spirit master.

The spectators were all shocked. They wanted to see what the two kids could do after seeing their spirits but were quickly disappointed by their sloppy way of fighting. Then, they saw Feng basically throwing himself at the jaws of death, only to see him barely scratched and when his counter attack hit Beibei, the latter was thrown three meters back!

A silhouette swiftly emerged from the spectating crowd and as it reached Beibei, it took him from the dumbfounded Feng's arms and ran to the class building. The silhouette was a silver-haired, gold eyed woman in her mid-thirties. She wore a silver tunic with the academy emblem embroidered at the c.h.e.s.t section.

After an initial shock from having his brother taken away from him while he was healing him, Feng's eyes began to get teary as he recognized the woman. It was their mother. But his elation quickly transformed into shame and guilt. They didn't see her often, yet when she saw them after seven months, she saw him heavily injuring his brother. Meanwhile, the spectators were dumbfounded seeing her " Isn't that teacher Leng Xue from the advanced academy? " … This brought a round of chatter.

But even though he was ashamed, he still followed her as his brother's health was more important. Once inside the infirmary, which was gigantic with more than a hundred beds, he got near his brother who was already attended by a nurse. She was releasing a white glow while one of her four spirit rings shone. With his spirit ring still active, the aura that he originally passively emanated was sensed by both a.d.u.l.ts there.

The nurse, after the initial surprise just got back to attending to Beibei's wound. His jaw was almost broken and he had multiple open wounds from the impact with the floor. The twins' mother though was shocked. She knew her oldest son was special as he was never easily hurt and had great strength for his age. This thus made it inconceivable for her that he would awaken a supportive spirit.

Seeing his guilty and ashamed face, she sighed. He was always a somehow m.a.t.u.r.e kid who didn't cause problems but would always feel very guilty each time he did. Silently opening her arms for a hug, she didn't have to wait long for Feng to slam onto her c.h.e.s.t with teary eyes while mumbling apologies.

Soothing him, she said " It's alright Feng, you didn't do anything wrong. Now you know how dangerous a fight can be so promise me to never fight with your brother again "

" I promise "

" Good, let's wait for your brother to wake up so that we can have a chat, alright? "

" Yes! "

After five minutes, Beibei woke up and the nurse left. As the first thing he saw when waking up was his mother, Beibei shot out of the bed and also slammed onto her c.h.e.s.t with teary eyes.

The fact that both of her children were so happy just to see her pained her. She wasn't here for most of their childhoods and they never saw their father.

After a while, he let go and looked at his brother. There was no hostility nor grudge in his gaze, only reverence was present. " Brother you are too strong! How is it possible? Is it because you are a spirit master? "

Still feeling guilty, Feng replied hesitantly " Uhm, yes... "

" Awesome! It seems like I will have to become one to defeat you! "

Lightly tapping his head, Leng Xue softly reprimanded him " No fighting between the two of you. If you want to fight, it's together. "

" Y-Yes mom " Even though he said that, Beibei was inwardly grumbling that he would have his rematch once he became a spirit master.

Letting him down, she took his and Feng's hand and she led them out of the infirmary. Once outside, they headed out of the academy and went to a restaurant. They didn't go to a luxurious one but to a simple mid-sized restaurant that served deer steaks with potato soup, the typical north food.

On the way and inside, they didn't stop talking though it was mostly Beibei recounting everything about their life in the village with Feng nodding from time to time and Leng Xue asking questions to Beibei. Thinking about the village, they began to think about the nanny, which made them sad as they missed her.

Feng, who was only passive up until now asked " Mom, what's the name of our nanny? Why do you never tell us? "

" Oh, I don't know, she was a friend of your father for all I know. Anyway, do you want to see her again? "

" Of course! "

" Then you will have to work hard so that you can be granted vacations. "

With a doubtful face, he asked " Why? Don't we normally have vacations? "

Sighing, she replied " Not in spirit academy. For commoners like us, we have to earn everything with our efforts. So be sure to work hard "

" Yes! "

After that, they got back the front of the dormitory building.

As she was about to bring another subject of discussion, a masked man, other than temple knight Xia appeared in front of them and moved his lips, though no sound escaped from them. Puzzled and thinking he was maybe mute, the twins looked at him curiously while Leng Xue's face became more and more somber by the second.

After he was finished, the masked man disappeared. Looking at her sons with sadness, Leng Xue kneeled and hugged them while saying " I'm sorry, mommy has matters to attend to but I promise I will come back the fastest I can. "

Without letting them the time to try to make her stay, she also disappeared in a flash of silver light. She knew that if she heard any plea from her sons, she wouldn't be able to hold back her tears and would have stayed way too long. Unfortunately, what she had to do didn't permit her to stay longer, even more so having a bad state of mind.

Watching their mother suddenly leave like that, the older twin quietly held back his tears while appeasing the younger one who was already balling his eyes out. Dragging him to their room, Feng waited for his brother to calm down before stating with a resolute look " Bei, mom left even though she didn't want to, Class F is treated like trash and our father died. All of this is because of weakness so we have to become strong so that we won't have to do anything we don't want to ever again! "

Shocked at his usually calm brother's outburst, Beibei nodded his head heavily and vowed to become strong with his brother so that they wouldn't have to be forced to part with their mother for the matter but also with each other.
