If She Failed to Protect

This person who saved Francesca might also be the person who is Leonardo’s true enemy.

Having understood what Francesca wanted to tell him, Leonardo narrowed his golden moon-like eyes.

“Answer me one thing Francesca.”

“What is it?”

“She tilted her head, as Leonardo asked with an extremely earnest gaze.

“Did you play the role of the ‘bait’ like this just to confirm that?”

“!”

She looked surprised at his question, and then quickly shook her head. She could have never even imagined that someone would show up in that place to help her.

“That’s not true.”

She wanted to avoid the event where Graziano got shot, and wanted to pass through that event without getting anyone else injured that’s all.

But in the end, things didn’t go too well, that poor prostitute got dragged in and almost got shot, and Francesca herself almost got shot as well just to save that lady.

If this mysterious person hadn’t come to her aid, that bullet would have surely gone through Francesca’s body.

“………There was simply a person I wanted to save. But in the end, I ended up failing like this though…..”

When she put it all in words again, she once again realized just how bad things could have without her mysterious helper.

Perhaps, Francesca could have failed and dragged that lady into fatal danger. And even after avoiding that, she ended up falling down this cliff anyway, and made everyone go out to find her in a panic.

There was even a chance that Graziano’s father could have gotten killed during the commotion her disappearance had caused. Even though she knew the conclusion, Francesca would have still ended up letting him die anyway.

(Every attempt to change things ended in failure………..I don’t want to think that way but, these thoughts keep circling around inside my head…….)

Francesca unconsciously hugged her own body.

(In this scenario, as the events continue to vaguely follow the story, only I alone am exempt from death. Even after falling down a cliff, I lived. But as long as I am the [protagonist], I’ll keep dragging others into more problems…….)

Just as she realized that her body had begun to shiver, it was then..

“Francesca.”

“!”

Leonardo’s hands touched the white coat that he had let Francesca borrow from him.

“Sorry. Perhaps the wet coat was no good after all. Should I take it back?”

She absentmindedly wondered if perhaps he was feeling a bit cold too as Francesca quickly nodded, and let go of her hands.

“Yeah, of course! Thanks for letting me borrow……”

Before she could finish thanking him, the coat on her shoulders was pulled away.

Before she could even think any further, suddenly her body felt a pull, as Leonardo tightly hugged her from behind.

“Leonardo?”

“Doing this should make you much warmer. Right?”

She could already feel their own body heat bringing an extra warmth to each other. If she had been wearing any thick clothes, this heat surely wouldn’t have come to her.

Leonardo leaned his forehead on the back of her head, and muttered in a very small voice.

“……….I really can’t handle seeing you shiver like that.”

“…………”

Perhaps Leonardo had already intuited that the cause for her shivering was not just the cold.

“I think, in the future…”

Francesca hung her head, and spoke while trying her best to suppress her trembling.

“……there’ll be people that only I will be able to protect.”

She had had been reborn as [Francesca], the protagonist of the game.

This too was unavoidable problem for her, just as her yakuza family in her past life, and her being the daughter of the Calvino family in this life was.

“If I act properly and in time, I might be able to save them. I might be able to save them from their misfortune. There’s a lot of people like that.”

“……..Francesca.”

“I just, wanted to live a calm, peaceful and normal life……..but just as much, these people that I have the chance to protect also probably have a wish to live their life that way as well…….”

So, if Francesca could use her knowledge of the scenario, she could grant their wishes as well perhaps.

But on the opposite side, by going against the scenario, someone else might get hurt instead. The unease that came with that unknown factor had now filled her heart.

“A world where I fail to protect these people, my [peaceful life] simply doesn’t exist in that world. But..”

Her back that was in contact with Leonardo felt very warm.

And yet, her voice seemed to tremble even more.

“………If I fail to save them……What will I do………?”

“………….”

It was story from her childhood, a secret she shared with only Graziano.

Right after she had regained the memories of her past life, she had instantly began her search for him. She would secretly sneak into the slums area under the control of the Ranieri family, and looked for this young boy who should have been desperately trying to survive after having lost his mother.

Back then, her father was still quite cold to her, and so she didn’t have the support of the family members either, so she wouldn’t have been given permission to go to Ranieri territory.

And like that, she desperately searched for him but she was never able to find him in the end.

(Even from back then, I had been unable to avoid the game’s scenario.)

Soon after, Graziano came to their house, and after becoming close with him, she started to believe that perhaps she could change the game’s events after all.

But in truth, if she really had the ability to fight against their fate and change the scenario, she should have been able to find Graziano and save him from the slums before he had to go through the trauma of seeing his own father deliver that horrible order.

“Just kidding……….ehehe, I ended up rambling about something strange.”

If she started grumbling complaints like that, she would only trouble Leonardo even more obviously. Thinking that, she trying to sheepishly laugh it off but, even that didn’t go to well.

“Francesca.”

For a moment she thought that Leonardo was stepping away from her but soon after, he pulled her back again but this time making her face him directly.

His large hands grabbed her by the chin, and made her look up towards him directly. And then, Leonardo’s forehead gently touched her own forehead.

“First of all, I want you to remember this.”

“……….?”

While Francesca blinked in beffudlement, Leonardo closed his eyes as he began to speak.

“——Everything about me, my very being, was saved by your presence in my life.”

“!”
