The Biography of Albrecht – Chapter 2

After seeing off his father, who rode off on horseback together with several armed attendants to instead inspect the territory, Albrecht immediately went to his room and took out his outdoor clothes, which happened to be a gambeson(1).

Albrecht’s gambeson looked like a black quilted jacket which went down to his thighs just above his knees. Because of the linen which had been added to it, it gave surprisingly good protection against stabbing or slashing, but it was also a good shock absorbing cloth that could be worn beneath chain armor.

In this world where the concept of law was rare, gambesons could be considered as the minimum requirement for those who used swords, and it was even something that commoners often wore to fight off the cold.

The only difference was that gambesons worn by commoners were usually made from scraps of cloth and animal hairs instead of linen, which created a large contrast to the gambeson Albrecht was wearing.

After running out of the castle, Albrecht paused and looked back.

While he naturally had memories of the castle’s appearance, this was the first time that he was looking at the castle after mixing with his Earth ‘self’.

The top of the Hoenkaltern Mountain, which had a height of about 855m above sea level, was surrounded by a large wooden fence, and at the highest point of the mountain was a three story wooden keep where the family lived. While there were stables, blacksmiths, chapels and warehouses, could this really be called a castle?

Compared to the stylish stone castles from the Middle Ages in his Earth self’s memories, the castle itself was not much to look at. But the view from the castle was so beautiful that he felt that it was unparalleled even when compared to the modern world of Earth.

He couldn’t get enough of the scene where he could appreciate when the sun rose and set on the horizon with just a glance.

And he couldn’t feel too disappointed at the fact that his father was struggling to maintain this small territory.

They had to defend against bandits wandering here and there, plunderers from the north, monsters and beasts, lords of neighbouring territories, and even Kings.

Kaltern farmed wheat, but the yield wasn’t that good. Because of this, they had to constantly ensure the safety of the trade route because they were barely able to make a living by selling specialty wood. But there were still many things to take care of, like settling disputes between residents.

Forcing them to do tasks at the risk of their lives did little to ease the tension and they could not judge those who were on trial too harshly, which made everything more stressful.

Thinking about his father led Albrecht to think about his mother. So he went back into the castle.

When he went to the stables, he found Adelhyde cleaning with a hood on her head and a white cloth covering her face.

Seeing his mother like this caused Albrecht’s heart to ache with regret.

There was always a lack of labor, a lack of clothing, and a lack of food. Everything was lacking to the point that even the Lady of the territory had to help.

Although there were servants, the reality of the matter was that there wasn’t enough. They did have a stablehand, but he was one of the attendants who went out with his father.

He was also one of the Lord’s Knights.

Just like Hans, every servant in the castle held multiple positions. In the first place, this was a world that didn’t learn the concept of division of labor like in the modern world.

Everyone was just doing their best to fulfill the tasks that they had been given. And no one in this world, be it commoner or noble, could survive without doing their very best.

This wasn’t a metaphor, it was literal death.

Albrecht suddenly felt playful. He wanted to surprise his mother, who didn’t know that he was watching from behind as he was busily working to clean the floor of the stable, which was covered in horse dung, leftover feed and scattered straw.

He felt that it would be fine, so he sneakily approached his mother.

“Boo!”

“Kyaak!”

He quickly hugged his mother who almost fell from the surprise.

“Hahaha! Did I surprise you, Mother? Hahaha!”

She was a mother who was willing to do even repulsive tasks like cleaning the stables, but she still acted gentle and feminine. So it was funny to see his mother so surprised.

When Albrecht suddenly hugged from behind, Adelhyde, who was genuinely surprised at first, struggled for a moment before staring at his face for a moment. Then she began to cry.

“I was surprised… I was really surprised… hik.”

“Mo-, Mother…”

When he saw his mother burst into tears instead of the scolding remark that he expected, Albrecht froze in shock for a moment.

Then his mother suddenly yelled.

“Boo!”

“…”

“Hohoho! Surprised? Albrecht, you can’t beat your mother just yet. Hohoho!”

He wasn’t surprised at all when she shouted ‘boo!’ but he was surprised by her fake crying.

That’s right. Albrecht had inherited his mischievous personality from his mother. Although she was quiet and wise, Albrecht’s mother was still a playful woman.

When he was younger, Adelhyde played a lot of pranks on Albrecht. Then, she would always hug him tightly at the end.

Adelhyde looked at Albrecht lovingly and said.

“Put me down, I have to finish my work.”

“I will do it. Mother, you go rest in the castle.”

Adelhyde opened her eyes wide and inspected Albrecht closely. It seems she was looking to see if he was playing tricks again.

“I’m serious, Mother. I will do it.”

Albrecht decided to carry his mother all the way to the castle as a show of filial piety before returning to the stables.

It was the middle of the day, so they could see the blacksmith, Arnold, and his apprentice who were about to begin working.

“This is embarrassing. Put me down quickly.”

Adelhyde spoke in embarrassment, but Albrecht simply smiled and held his mother tighter.

“Good morning, Arnold.”

Arnold looked at this scene and smiled so brightly, showing that one of his front teeth was missing.

“Kikiki. I almost thought that there was a bandit kidnapping our Lady.”

His words were rude, but Albrecht wasn’t offended. Instead, it was quite pleasant.

Blacksmith Arnold had been by Albrecht’s side since he was a child. Most people feared and stayed away from Albrecht because of his inhuman strength, but Arnold always said that he would definitely be a King when he grew up.

Whenever he was scolded by his father for his mischief, he would always visit Arnold and be comforted. The fact that Arnold could laugh and joke with Albrecht showed his care. It was just that he wished the man would make more appropriate jokes.

“You’re the one who looks like a bandit, Arnold.”

When Albrecht responded in this way, Arnold laughed heartily. After giving a greeting that didn’t seem befitting of the son of the Lord, he passed him and went to the castle.

Looking at him go, Arnold couldn’t help but feel relieved. He had been worried about Albrecht after his injury, but now, although he seemed to be a bit different, at least he looked healthy.

Adelhyde buried her face in Albrecht’s chest all the way to the castle, feeling like she couldn’t lift her head in this embarrassing situation.
