The Biography of Albrecht – Chapter 7

Albrecht woke up at dawn long before the sun rose and jumped out of the window. He was only on the second floor, but it was already considered high enough because the land where the castle was built was actually a few meters higher than the surrounding stables and smithy. Jumping off would be too reckless.

Even so, Albrecht landed without any difficulty.

There were guards stationed at the front gate of the watchtower. They were adults from the mountain selected to take turns guarding the castle. Albrecht ran towards the wooden fence and jumped as high as he could to grab the other side of the fence with his hand.

On the other side of the fence was a steep mountain slope, several meters higher than the height of the fence. Even Albrecht had doubts if he would land safely on the ground or just roll down the mountain and die.

Albrecht’s heart pounded hard. He wanted to back out, but he had already made up his mind. He jumped off, and—because the ground wasn’t flat—lost his center of gravity as soon as he landed and fell. He thought he would continue to roll down the steep mountain but he managed to grab a branch of a tree to maintain his center of gravity.

He slid down the mountain faster than he did when he ran to the front gate because the slope of the mountain was very steep.

He went straight to Eric’s house.

Eric was sleeping. Since attacking a sleeping opponent was not Albrecht’s style, he patted his cheek gently to wake him up. Eric opened his eyes and was surprised to see Albrecht.

“You up?”

“Y-Young master?”

“Yeah, you bastard. How dare you snitch on me to my father? I’ll take my time killing you.”

Albrecht slapped Eric’s cheeks hard.

Eric was dazed from the blow.

“Uuggh…”

Eric spat out some teeth as blood spilled out of his mouth.

Albrecht hit him a few more times. Eric fainted not long after.

Albrecht carried Eric on his shoulders and went towards their hideout in the woods. There were five people sleeping around and they looked like they had been drinking. Jurgen was among them.

Most of the parents in territory cared for their children, but a few treated their children like outcasts.

Albrecht tied Eric on a post in the cabin.

“Hey everyone, wake up.”

Albrecht kicked the children sleeping on the floor and used a flint to light the torches hanging on the walls of the cabin. Though the torches created a risk of catching fire in the cabin, they didn’t mind. The lights should be on when playing at night.

The children rubbed their eyes and stood up.

“Uh… Captain?”

“You punks. It’s now time for payback.”

The children had mixed expressions on their face. They had no idea what was going on; they  only thought that they were going to play a new game. But they were startled when they saw Eric tied to a post. His cheeks were swollen, and they looked like they were going to burst. Blood was dripping from his mouth.

Albrecht had never directly hurt anyone before. He acted impulsively towards the people but would only instruct the kids to do the deed. He didn’t get involved himself.

“C-Captain… What are you going to…”

“What do you mean? Revenge, of course. No, actually you could call this a manifestation of justice. They say that father used to be terrifying and cruel. So as the lord’s successor, I think it’s only reasonable to punish a rat-like snitch like him.”

Albrecht foundt a thick cloth and stuffed it into Eric’s mouth. He tied the knot firmly behind the man’s head to prevent him from shouting.

Eric woke up as soon as his body was moved while being tied, his surroundings becoming bright.

“Ugh… Uh…”

He couldn’t open his eyes. He was still incapable of thinking straight.

“I told you, right? I’ll kill you slowly. Hey, get me the knife.”

“C-Captain…”

The children always move as soon as they hear Albrecht’s words. However, this time, no one moved after they had an ominous premonition.

“What’s wrong? You won’t bring the knife to me?”

Albrecht stared and frowned at them.

One of the children quickly moved to give him a knife but he dropped it when Jurgen slapped his hand.

Albrecht stared at Jurgen in silence. Jurgen became afraid and trembled. He didn’t dare look him in the eye.

“Jurgen, bring it to me.”

Jurgen’s lips quivered. He seemed like he was about to burst into tears—but he didn’t move. A child next to him who was a little older than him picked up the knife that had fallen to the floor and gave it to Albrecht.

Albrecht stared at Jurgen for a moment until he turned his attention to Eric.

The knife was a multipurpose knife except it couldn’t be used for skinning animals. It was a bit bent, rusty and dirty.

Albrecht grabbed one of Eric’s ears and tried to cut it. However, the knife didn’t cut well. He decided to just cut it off with force.

“Huuuooooooooo!”

Eric’s whole body trembled with pain.

Albrecht also cut off his other ear and his nose. Before he knew it, his hands became covered with blood.

The children stood frozen with fear and were struck by the show of cruelty that they had never seen before.

Albrecht threw the knife casually on the ground and stood up in front of the trembling children. They couldn’t look at him.

“We’ll keep him alive. Next time, I’ll personally cut his throat open.”

Albrecht washed his hands in a bucket of water before returning to the castle. He needed to go back before his parents woke up.

Though Albrecht had a hard time expressing himself, he seemed to have finally crossed something that held him back before. Now, he felt like he could do everything. He thought since he had the power, couldn’t he just use it as he wished?

He felt a sense of liberation.

He climbed the steep slope of the Hoenkaltern Mountain, walked back to the castle, and climbed up a tree. He stepped on a sturdy branch then ran up to the wooden fence. With his heart pounding, he jumped up to grab the edge.

As he tried to go beyond inside the wooden fence, he heard the rumble of a thunder that sounded like the sky being torn apart.

Then he lost consciousness.

“Well, didn’t you say that you wanted revenge.”

He suddenly remembered everything when he heard the word ‘revenge’. It brought goosebumps all over his body.

Eric was the owner of the cow he killed.

The past Albrecht was a real psychopath. He wasn’t just a gangster. He was crazier than he thought. He wondered why he didn’t remember this.

He left Jurgen behind and ran straight to their hideout. It would have taken a long time to walk but Albrecht was so fast and arrived shortly afterwards.
