Chapter 9 – Yandere and Dogs Part 1

I want to play with dogs. On the way to the university, such a thought popped into my head. Perhaps it was because I had not been back home for a while, but I was missing my dog.

My parents have a shibe, but I would be happy to touch any dog, small or large. I want to be exposed to the friendly but warm communication that is unique to dogs.

However, many of my friends live alone, so it seems difficult to get them to let me touch their dog. Asking a stranger on a walk to let you touch their dog is also a hurdle.

The only option left is to go to so-called “dog cafes”, but such places refuse to allow men to enter alone… From a security standpoint, this is not an option. (T/N: Why though…?)

If I go with a woman, I would have no problem getting in, but I don’t know anyone close enough to go with…

“You seem to be in trouble, senpai.”

“Are you a ninja?”

Tsubaki appeared out of the shadows as if she had timed it perfectly. I wonder if she’s been listening in on my thoughts.

“I have nothing to ask of you.”

“There, there, don’t say that. They say it’s easier to talk to someone about your problems.”

“If I had to say, your presence troubles me.”

Even this ghostly fellow is a woman, and she might be useful in my foray into dog cafes. But I don’t want to owe her anything…

“This is between me and senpai, isn’t it?”

“It’s between the perpetrator and the victim… Sometimes you have to pay me back.”

“Yes?”

“I have a favor to ask you.”

“Eh, what is it? I’ll do whatever I can to help! Should I kidnap someone? If you don’t like the idea of direct action, I can also perform curses and the like. Or maybe…we can fake an accident? I’d like to take a moment to discuss this.”

“Why do you look so happy… No, it’s not that kind of stuff.”

“What is it?”

“I want you to…accompany me to a dog cafe.”

I thought I would get an immediate OK, but to my surprise, Tsubaki fell silent with her head in her hands. What, is this such a difficult request?

“A date with senpai… But… Dogs are… Hmm…”

“You don’t like dogs?”

“I hate dogs. Those noisy little b******s.”

“Huh? They’re a hundred million times cuter than you.”

“Ugh…”

I thought I would get another quick rebuttal, but Tsubaki just kept on thinking. Usually, the response would be depressingly quick, but today’s response was very shocking.

“Do you know the number one animal that kills the most humans?”

“What’s with you suddenly… Is it dogs?”

“No, it’s mosquitos.”

“I thought it would be dogs! And you said a pretty unexpected one at that!”

“By the way, the dog comes in fourth. Aren’t you afraid? Tens of thousands of people are killed by dogs every year… Ah, the horror.”

“Now that we got to this point, I’m curious about third and second place too.”

“Ah, third place is snakes and second place is people. Well, that’s not surprising.”

“Second place is scarier!”

“I wonder if that’s true.”

Still, it’s oddly roundabout. I mean, dogs kill a lot of people, but most of them are probably wild dogs from foreign countries, so why should we be scared of domesticated dogs? Could it be that Tsubaki…

“Are you afraid of dogs?”

“Huh? I’m not afraid of those damn things. Whether ten or twenty come, I’ll overwhelm them with the power of civilization. We have firearms and knives on our side, remember? There’s no reason to be scared.”

“You’re being very talkative.”

“You’re joking too much if you say I’m afraid of dogs. F-Fufu…”

“Isn’t your voice a little shaky?”

“It’s just your imagination, senpai. Or maybe the earth is shaking.”

She’s so desperate. I’m starting to feel like being mean.

“Well, if Tsubaki is afraid of dogs, I guess it can’t be helped. I’ll ask another girl.”

“Eh, that’s…”

Ahh… Um… Tsubaki groaned and swayed dizzyingly from side to side. She’s clearly upset. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her this troubled before.

“I-I’ll…go…”

“Is that so? Then we’ll go after college. I have classes until fourth period today, so we’ll go after that.”

“Things to repel dogs… Maybe herbs? Citrus would be a good choice too…”

“Come as you are. Don’t bother the dogs.”

“You’re not going to go and get rid of me with dogs, are you, senpai…?”

“I won’t do that. I’d feel sorry for the dogs.”

As we walked around, talking and rambling, before we knew it, we had reached the building of the Literature Faculty of the university. This is where Tsubaki and I will part for now.

“I’ll go to the bench over there after fourth period, so you can wait for me there after class.”

“I understand… I’ll be waiting for you after I write my farewell note.”

“Are we going to a war zone? Well, don’t worry, you’ll see how cute the dogs are.”

“I think I’m going to hate senpai for the first time.”

“That’s good.”

Leaving Tsubaki behind me, who seemed resentful, I decided to head for the Faculty of Education building. I could feel the negative aura coming from behind me, but I didn’t look back and continued on my way. Today is going to be quite a fun day.
