Chapter 1: Self-awareness awakens

The weather of the end of September still carried the heat of the summer. Xiao Yao stretched out her hand and touched her forehead, feeling a little hot. Let’s not catch a cold on a warm day!
She forced her eyelids open and looked at the blackboard for another two minutes. Her eyes were heavy and her ears were buzzing.
She really couldn’t take it anymore, nobody could blame her for being rude! She closed her eyes and raised her left hand high, before calmly shouting: “Teacher, I need to go to the bathroom!”
Her voice was not loud but enough to have all eyes of the classroom converge towards her. Teacher Li, who had been talking endlessly, was interrupted and also stared at the famous thorn of the class; the girl’s eyes were closed, she really was so arrogant that no-one else mattered!
“Xia Yao, this class started only twenty minutes ago and you already went five times! What do you take discipline as?”
Regardless of the teacher’s anger, Xia Yao straightened and stood up indifferently. With another shout, she said: “I am incontinent, this is so embarrassing!”
She turned around, opened the back door, and left as the classroom roared with laughter.

Xia Yao headed to the restrooms and splashed cold water on her face, which relieved the heat a little bit. As she made her way back to the classroom, she suddenly thought of something and walked towards the cafeteria to get a bag of ice cubes.
Class F was the worst class in the school and Xia Yao was the last one in the grade. But it wasn’t so bad, she could always be number one if she worked harder.
It was currently time for class and there were not many people on campus. Xia Yao had three bags of ice stacked on her head and slowly walked back to her classroom with her hands in her pockets. Perhaps because the temperature on her forehead had finally dropped, she felt that her brain could finally start working and she thought about her sudden regain of self-awareness.

The world she now lived in was a Mary Sue campus novel called “The sweetheart of the three big bosses”, and for every successful novel, there was a tool character whose only purpose was to promote the development of the plot, using their viciousness or stupidity to set off the kindness and perfection of the heroine. And it happened that she was this vicious female character, whose only skill was making a fool of herself trying to frame the heroine. And of course, as a successful vicious female character, she had experienced a bumpy mental journey to blacken in the later part and become crazy jealous of the female lead.

The story was very simple. Xia Yao’s parents had lost her when she was six or seven years old and under their deep sense of guilt, they had adopted a girl who looked somewhat similar to her from the orphanage and had named her Xia Xi. Just like any Mary Sue novel, Xia Yao had come back to her biological family at the age of sixteen and had originally believed her parents would be happy to be reunited with her; but unfortunately, everyone had only cared about Xia Xi and had regarded her as air.
So Xia Yao had quit. She had started behaving like a demon, had tried to rob the heroine of her male leads, and had tried to frame her over and over again. Not only had she failed, she had also been caught on the spot by the heroes. And while the heroine had been lightly dealing with the men who adored her, Xia Yao had gradually aroused their hatred, and when the plot had not needed her anymore, she had jumped to her death.
Xia Yao: … This novel was written by a primary school student, wasn’t it? Who wants to be stuck in this messy plot, she has no time!
Now that her self-awareness had awakened, her IQ had finally returned to normal and she understood that there was nothing more important than learning. The author had portrayed her character with reduced wisdom and lowered intelligence; no matter how hard she studied, she would never learn a single word and be wrong all the time.
As she was lost in thoughts, Xia Yao suddenly felt some cold liquid falling from the corner of her eyes and sniffed. Was she crying because the novel had targeted her too much? She stretched out her hand and realized it was the ice bag on her head that was dripping and her hair had become all wet.

She knocked on the back door of the classroom and returned back to her seat. Before sitting down, Teacher Li said: “Ah, you went to the bathroom for so long!”
Xia Yao touched her head and calmed down. She opened her mouth to answer: “I’m sorry Teacher, I went to wash my hair.”
She looked at the door for a minute, thinking whether she should leave instead; had it been for the usual Xia Yao, she would have gone to wander around the campus. But now things were different, she could understand the crooked mathematical symbols on the board and for the next half of the lesson, she listened more seriously than anyone else.

As soon as the bell rang, Xia Yao quickly zipped up her bag, slid on the shoulder strap, and kicked the chair under the table. Outside the classroom, her friends were standing in the corridor, leaning on the railing.
The girl who had tied the lower half of her shirt in a bow to show off her belly button was called Xu Yinuan and was her best friend from school. Xia Yao’s brother was called Xia Yuan, Xu Yinuan liked Xia Yuan and had befriended her at the beginning just to get closer to him.
Xia Yao had transferred to this aristocratic high school a year ago. Not only did she have the face of a villain, but she had also become instantly famous for her ridiculously bad entrance examination results, even lower than Xu Yinuan. Coupled with her relationship with Xia Yuan, Xu Yinuan had accepted Xia Yao as her little sister at a glance and they had made trouble on campus together ever since.

When Xu Yinuan saw Xia Yao come out, she greeted her and put her arm around her shoulders.
“Xia Yao, why didn’t you come out early? Old Teacher Li’s class is so lame, it’s better to escape!”
She paused for a second: “Listen, Zhang San appeared in the corner of Wutong Avenue. This cheating trash, we must rush to teach him a lesson!”
According to the plot of the novel, when Xia Yao and her group of friends were making waves and beating Zhang San up, they would meet with Ji Huai, one of the heroine’s most sought-after admirers, and be branded as gangsters in his eyes.
Xia Yao just wanted to stay away from the plot and concentrate on learning.
“I won’t go to today’s charity event.” She pulled Xu Yinuan’s hand away and lied, “There is something at home today.”
Their activities to eradicate and beat up scumbags were referred to as charity events. This group of sisters led by Xu Yinuan had zero tolerance for the school’s jerks. They wanted them to suffer more than ten times the pain they had caused as retribution and helped the people of campus at no charge get the justice they needed. It really was a charity organization.
Yu Xinuan looked at Xia Yao and noticed tears in the corner of her eyes. Xia Yao was the main force of their group, she must really have something to do if she couldn’t accompany them.
“It’s okay.” Xu Yinuan shook her hand, “Xia Yao, you can go and rest assured, leave everything to us! I will let Sweet Sister film the whole process so it’s like you’re still here!”
Xia Yao nodded but as soon as she opened her mouth, a voice rang in her head: [Please show up at the corner of Wutong Avenue before 18:02 and be sure to complete the plot of “The sweetheart of the three big bosses”.]
Xia Yao: ??? Do what now?
The voice sounded again, cold and without the slightest emotion: [Listen well. The world you are living in now is the world of the novel “The sweetheart of the three big bosses”. Because the author has stopped updating, you have temporarily regained your self-awareness. Once the plot fails, your self-awareness will immediately be obliterated and your original character’s setting will be restored.]
Xia Yao faintly understood.
Xia Yao: Thank you author for dropping your story, the author is my mother.
But according to the voice in her head, it seemed that in order to keep her self-awareness and newly discovered IQ, she needed to follow the original plot. She thought about it for a second and asked: [Does maintaining the plot affect learning?]
The voice was obviously taken aback but after a while, it mechanically replied: [No effect.]
Xia Yao was relieved; as long as she could study, letting the plot run its course could be considered a past-time!

Xu Yinuan and the other sisters were about to teach Zhang San a lesson and Xia Yao stopped her before she could go: “Xu Yinuan, I changed my mind. I will go with you, what is happening at home is not as important as beating up a scumbag!”
Xu Yinuan looked at the fair-skinned girl in front of her. Her eyes were beautiful and bright, shining like she had stars in them. This was the soul of their group! What a responsible girl Xia Yao must be to push back family affairs for public welfare activities!

TL note: It’s a simple and rather short story of a novel character who regained self-awareness and aims for the best universities as she accidentally counterattacks against her white-lotus adopted sister.
The MTL is very easy and neither the story nor the writing is exceptional, but Xia Yao is kinda cool and it was very enjoyable to read. I hope you like it~
