The Unknown God

Chapter 28 - 27 Competition

Golden beams of light danced over the walls. Alex laid on his bed. Observing this natural light show. He had spent the last night working. Researching historical architecture doc.u.ments. Compiling them. And incorporating them into his plans. After a few moments, he sighed and started his daily routine. He knew that a long day awaited him.

His research led him to believe that he would start with an outpost. The outpost would become a village after a certain amount of development goals were reached. From a village, he would have to invest even more before it evolved into a town. And even more, for it to become a city. The development goals generally revolved around the population, the industry, the trade and the security of the outpost.

Being the third human settlement built in the surrounding it would face constant raids from the goblins. Further aggravated by Simply's Death Mark. The defence would be a crucial factor in the growth of the outpost. The population would be of no problem due to the abundance of settlers. Although the food supply may turn out to be a pain in the a.s.s for the first few weeks.

Alex swiftly prepared his breakfast. A cup of dark coffee energised him. The smell of oven-toasted sourdough bread paired wonderfully with the rich aroma of Arabica. A pair of sunnyside up and a few slices of crackling bacon dressed his plate. The final ingredient was a creamy camembert. He browsed the game's forum while he ate.

Not much had occurred during the night, in the Eternal Empire side. The Romanum Empire had made a move against the native lizardmen tribe. The had enlisted the help of players. A player by the name of Biggus D.i.c.kus had led his guild into battle. They had marched into battle in formation. Alone they had wiped out an entire tribe. Impressed by his military leadership, a high ranking NPC officer had bestowed upon him the title of Centurion, making the player in charge of a hundred NPC soldiers. His reward also contained a Clan Tablet, the first in the game. His Guild, the Legionnaires had capitalised on the opportunity to increase their member size. The other Empires had also launched an offensive against the native population, but with varying levels of success. Alex felt his stomach clench. He did not like people getting ahead of him.

'You may have claimed the first Clan. But mark my words. I will be the first to claim a crown.'

Placing his DreamGear on his slightly damp hair, Alex entered the virtual world.

Simply opened his eyes to a low hanging ceiling. He got up from the hard bed.

"Alright time to scout out a location for my future seat of power."

Ten minutes later, he was at the town gate when he noticed a young lad begging for a piece of bread. The NPC ignored him, while the players were too busy to notice him. They had to hurry if they wanted to match up with the other players from the other Empires.

Simply walked up to starved teen and gave him his remaining loaf of bread that every player starts out with. The teen devoured the piece of bread without holding back. When he finished, Simply asked him about his situation.

"I came here with my parents and my little sister or at least that was the plan. Unfortunately, during a violent storm, our ship sank. We managed to get one a raft. But when the starvation hit... my parents decided they only had enough food for... one child. At the next meal, they gave me both my meagre portion and my little sister's and told me to eat. I cut it in half and gave it to her. My mother shoved it back. 'You eat it all or she gets it all, it's you or her.' I almost choked on every bite, tears ran down my face. At first, she cried and made a fuss, but after a time she just became limp and listless. Her eyes became unfocused and then one day she simply did not wake up. My parents soon reunited with her. Two after I ran out of food, the waters washed my battered raft on the beach. Now I don't know what to do. I'm too weak for labour, but without labour, I will starve and my family's sacrifice would have been for nothing. Please help me, noble sir."

"You have been through a lot. Go to the Inn, and tell Durnan that I sent you. You can rest in my room for now. If you are hungry ask Durnan. Here, this should be enough to cover your meal. I'll be back tonight. By the way, what's your name?"

Tears in his eyes, "Rexignis. Thank you so much."

Smiling Simply turn around and headed into the wild.

Simply roamed the land the entire day. Those who got in his way became loot. His inventory was filled to the brink by nightfall. His search led him to quite a few different landscapes. From rolling hills to the overgrown forests, passing by rivers and creeks. His search continued until the orange rays of the setting sun reflected upon a clear lake. Sharp and tall hills laid in the background while a forest surrounded the lake. An island rose in the middle of the lake. Simply felt a powerful aura emit form the island. Beaming at the island he spoke out.

"Found you!"
