“Ooh! It’s a workshop!”
“Indeed it is.”
The insides of the hidden room lead to a workshop.
A large alchemy pot was place in the center, and a shelf containing raw materials was fixed to the wall.
“So many, raw materials, never seen before.”
“You’re right. I’m sure many of these are really precious now.”
Sui said while taking a closer look at the shelf.
There were plenty of raw materials still left on it.
The ones that remained were all hard-to-decay rare materials, so this was a great find.
“Awesome work! Reno!”
“Ehehe~”
As I stroked her head, Reno happily loosened her cheeks.
“Hey, isn’t this, an alchemy pot?”
“Yeah.”
Kili was fixated on the alchemy pot placed at the center.
It was 10 times bigger in size than the one she was currently using, and exactly what she wanted.
With that, the production rate of wooden hoes would increase exponentially, plus she’ll be able to make a whole range of other stuff.
There were various things in the room, so we took our time exploring it all.
We had trap detection on, so there weren’t any risks either.
“Hey, Lain. There’s a book, here too.”
“Eh?”
As I was looking around the alchemy pot left in the middle of the room with Kili, Sui calls out to me.
As I turn towards her, I see a book with a blue cover in front of her.
The book itself was plain blue, yet I couldn’t help but feel something unsettling about it.
I had seen a book like that once before.
“Sui! Stop! Don’t touch that!”
“Eh?”
My voice reached her too late, as Sui’s fingertips touched the book.
At that moment, a black substance jumped out of the book, and spread around Sui as if it was about to devour her.
“Kyaaaaaa!!”
“Sui!”
I rushed towards Sui instantly, and held onto her tightly in order to hide her from the black stuff.
It then wrapped around and entered inside of me.
“GUAAAAaaaa…ah? It doesn’t hurt that much.”
It seems that the black stuff wasn’t a curse or anything like I thought.
I stroked the anxious looking Sui’s head as gently as possible.
“Sui, are you okay?”
“Yeah, but, Lain…”
“I’m fine too.”
As I questioned Sui who was in my arms, she answered me while looking up fearfully.
I’m glad that she wasn’t hurt.
“Lain, your face…”
“Face?”
As Aria pointed out, I looked into the mirror nearby to find a curse mark emerging from the nape of my neck to the left cheek.
“Oh yeah, I had this from long ago. It’s a curse which kills you by the age of 50, but until then it only weakens your body so it’s nothing really.”
“Wha-!?”
I looked into the mirror nearby, but this was a curse mark I got a long time ago.
I, or rather the clan of all anti-demon aristocrats, were cursed a long time ago by a spell book.
It’s a curse that weakened the body and halved its lifespan.
I usually suppressed it using my own magical power, but it must have manifested itself as soon as it came in touch with another curse.
“It won’t be a problem as long as I manage to do something about it by 50, so I can take my time.”
“…I guess it’s fine if you say so…”
Aria didn’t sound satisfied, but she chose not to pursue further.
Truthfully told, it isn’t something you could manage to solve here, right now.
After all, it was a ‘curse’ categorized under ‘sorcery’.
I couldn’t do anything about it since my knowledge was limited to magic.
I had mastered the magic of suppressing ‘curses’, so I had no choice but to look into sorcery while using that simultaneously.
Well, in this age medical knowledge has declined significantly, and monsters have proliferated everywhere, so dying at 50 would still put me at the average, meaning I didn’t have to look that hard.
“I was wondering why such a normal house got turned into a ruin, but to think it was a hideout for the “Witch Cult”…”
“What’s a “Witch Cult”?”
“The “Witch Cult” was a group of people post mid-ages of the ancient magician civilization, who wanted to revive ‘sorcery’ which was forbidden.”
After the 2nd magician war, all magic came under spotlight.
However, compared to sorcery, magic had a lot more mysterious points as it was based on a different law.
This lead to Dryas making sorcery taboo.
Even so, there was still a group which tried to revive sorcery.
That group was collectively called the “Witch Cult”.
“This spell book is a medium for sorcery, plus it also has sorcery described in it.”
Saying that I extended my hand towards it.
However, my hand was repelled by a strong static current like force.
“Ow! It repelled me?”
“What does this mean?”
A spell book which hadn’t decided its master could be touched by anyone.
Rather, until and unless it receives instructions from its master, a spell book should act like a normal book by all standards.
By the remaining magic of its last user, it activated a curse, but once that happened it should have turned into a normal book.
“No, surely not–“
“What’s, wrong?”
I look down towards Sui, who was still in my arms.
“Sui, could you touch this spell book for me?”
“Eh?”
“It’s okay, there won’t be another curse. Once a curse has activated, it takes quite some time to accumulate magical power into it.”
“But won’t, it shock me, like it, did to Lain?”
It seems like she got scared seeing me get repelled through static current.
“It’s fine, probably. In case you get shocked, I’ll listen to any request you have.”
“…Okay.”
Sui extended her hand fearfully.
It didn’t get repelled at all.
The spell book was lightly lifted and placed into Sui’s arm.
“I’d guessed as much.”
“What do you mean?”
“This spell book has chosen Sui as its master.”
“EEH!?”
Aria’s bewildered voice echoed throughout the ruins.
“Indeed it is.”
