Chapter 27: Nightmare

That night.

After savoring Garnet-san’s homemade dishes, I was thoroughly enjoying tea time.

“Do you like the new tea leaves?” (Garnet)

“Yeah! It’s so delicious that I could even wash my face with it!” (Jade)

“You’ll burn your face.” (Garnet)

“…Munch, munch. Mm… munch, munch.”

“Hey, Dorami, you don’t have to force yourself to eat all of it.” (Jade)

“If you’re full, it’s okay to leave some.” (Garnet)

“…Munch… I-I’ll eat it all!” (Dorami)

Dorami was determined, but her spoon had already stopped moving.

In fact, she had let go of the spoon altogether. Dorami sat in her chair, rubbing her round belly.

It’s understandable, though. After all, a large plate with a mountain of food was served.

At first, Dorami’s eyes sparkled at the heaping mound of rice…

“B-but it’s not decreasing at all…” (Dorami)

She ate and ate, but she couldn’t finish the feast and was completely disheartened.

“Should I help you eat?” (Jade)

“Is Jade hungry too?” (Dorami)

“Garnet-san’s homemade dishes are on a different level. I can eat as much as I want.” (Jade)

“You’re not using another stomach to eat, are you?” (Garnet)

T/N: Might be lost in translation but it’s basically like that saying “girls have a second stomach for dessert” but this time it’s Jade for Garnet’s food.

“In that case, I’ll let you have some!” (Dorami)

Dorami pressed a hamburger and mashed potatoes into my mouth, and finally, the feast was complete.

“Thank you for the delicious meal!” (Dorami)

“It was really delicious! Thank you so much for going out of your way to prepare such a feast for us!” (Jade)

“You’re welcome. You can come by every day if you want.” (Garnet)

“I’m thrilled! …But, Garnet-san’s homemade dishes will have to wait for a while.” (Jade)

“Why is that?” (Garnet)

“We’re planning to go search for Onyx-san soon.” (Jade)

“I see. You’re going to search for my father…” (Garnet)

Garnet-san looks worried.

She must be concerned about whether or not we can find her missing father, who disappeared 12 years ago.

If that’s the case, I have to reassure her!

“I don’t know when, but I will definitely bring Onyx-san back with me!” (Jade)

“I’ll leave it to you. But, wouldn’t it be dangerous?” (Garnet)

It’s not dangerous at all… wait.

“Are you perhaps worried about me?” (Jade)

“I am. It might be a dangerous journey.” (Garnet)

“I-I see…” (Jade)

I couldn’t contain my joy and had a big grin on my face.

After all, I’m strong. No matter what quest I take on, there has never been anyone who worries about me. But, Garnet-san is different.

She doesn’t see me as a hero, but as a human being—she didn’t like me who was a hero, but the me who’s just a man.

That fact made me incredibly happy.

“There’s no need to worry. I’m used to traveling!” (Jade)

“If it’s experienced travelers like us, we can return without getting hurt!” (Dorami)

“You’re dependable.” (Garnet)

After Garnet-san praised her, Dorami seems embarrassed.

She tugged on my arm and urged me. She must really want to show what she’s made of.

“Dorami wants to leave soon! When are we leaving?” (Dorami)

“We’ll depart tomorrow.” (Jade)

“Where are you going to search?” (Garnet)

“First, we’ll go to the neighboring kingdom of Lingoc.” (Jade)

T/N: In the manga, they dubbed it as “Linvoc” but it says リーンゴック, (ringokku). I would say that it’s Lingok but Lingoc looks better.

“What?! We’re leaving the country!?” (Dorami)

“If the guild in the capital doesn’t have any information, it means he’s not in this country. Don’t worry, we can travel there by train. It won’t be a difficult journey.” (Jade)

“H-heeh. Dorami’s looking forward to the ekiben… Ah, thinking about food is making Dorami’s stomach ache…” (Dorami)

“I’ll take care of the cleanup, so go home and rest.”

“I’m sorry, two days in a row…” (Jade)

“It’s fine. When the journey is over, I want you to come back and eat here again.”

“Yes! I’ll definitely come back to eat!” (Jade)

I thanked Garnet-san and carried Dorami on my back as I headed home.

I put her straight into bed and soon enough, her breathing got softer.

…Well then.

I’d like to take a refreshing bath, but…

If something happens to Dorami, it would be bad. I guess I’ll go to sleep too.

With that decision in mind, I changed into my pajamas and drifted off to sleep…

“Aaaahhhhh!” (Dorami)

Suddenly, Dorami jumped up in shock.

“What’s wrong, Dorami!?” (Jade)

“It was nothing…” (Dorami)

“Nothing…? That was a really loud scream, though…” (Jade)

“It’s just snoring.” (Dorami)

“There’s no way that that’s snoring. Did you have a bad dream?” (Jade)

“…Yeah, it was a really scary dream.” (Dorami)

“What kind of dream was it? Sharing it with me might make you feel better.” (Jade)

Sitting next to her and stroking her back, Dorami opened up with a voice on the verge of tears.

“…It was a dream where Dorami was being beaten.” (Dorami)

“By who?” (Jade)

“Some unknown person… It might be a prophetic dream…” (Dorami)

“There’s no one who would do such a terrible thing.” (Jade)

“B-but… I’m a White Dragon.” (Dorami)

“It’s okay. Even if your true identity is revealed, you’ll be safe as long as you’re in this country…” (Jade)

…Ah, I see.

The ban on hunting White Dragons is only in effect in this country.

Once we leave the country, it won’t be the case.

That’s why Dorami was flustered when he heard about the neighboring country and ended up having a nightmare.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize.” (Jade)

“It’s only natural that you wouldn’t. After all, Dorami always has a dignified face… You wouldn’t even dream of seeing Dorami unsettled.” (Dorami)

“Yeah, you’re right. Dorami is really dignified. No one would think that you are a dragon.” (Jade)

“In that case, Dorami might be suspected. ‘There’s no way such a dignified girl could be human,’ or something…” (Dorami)

“I see… Well, how about adding some cuteness to your dignity? Maybe then you’ll look like a girl in her teens.” (Jade)

“A little bit of cuteness won’t diminish Dorami’s dignity…” (Dorami)

“You’re right.” (Jade)

What should I do? Would she feel relieved told her directly? Like: “Dorami, you’re not that dignified.”

Hmm… Even if she feels relieved, it’s not really good to try and hurt her feelings…

“For now, let’s not think about it and get some sleep, okay? We’ll figure out what to do tomorrow.” (Jade)

“Will we be spending tomorrow in the capital?” (Dorami)

“Yeah. We’ll put off leaving until the day after tomorrow for now.” (Jade)

“Then Dorami can sleep peacefully tonight!” (Dorami)

Dorami burrowed into the bed and soon started breathing peacefully.
