Chapter 39: Last Year’s Champion

After buying souvenirs and finishing registering for the contest…

We left our luggage at the inn and rested for a while before I asked Dorami.

“Aren’t you going to prepare for the contest?” (Jade)

“Prepare what?” (Dorami)

“The clothes you’re going to wear on the stage, accessories, trying out different hairstyles… All sorts of things, it’s about being stylish.” (Jade)

“Dorami doesn’t need anything else, she’s already bought what she wants~” (Dorami)

Dorami answered while looking at my face through the opera glasses.

She doesn’t seem like she’s holding back, it looks like she really intends to participate with just what she’s wearing.

Hmm… What should I do? She’s cute as it is, but I don’t know if it’ll be enough to win the contest.

But if I tell her, “If you don’t dress up, you’ll lose,” she might take it the wrong way.

It’s like saying, “You’re not cute if you’re not stylish.”

In that case, it might be better to trick her into it.

“Wouldn’t it make a good memory if you dressed up stylishly?” (Jade)

“…A good memory?” (Dorami)

“Yeah. It’s a long-awaited trip, so I don’t think it’s good that you try things you don’t usually do.” (Jade)

“So there’s a reason…” (Dorami)

Alright, just one more push.

“If you tell Marin-chan about the contest and that you wore the fashion trend to win, I’m sure she’ll call it amazing.” (Jade)

“Dorami will try to be stylish!” (Dorami)

T/N: I haven’t written it cause it’s a mess to add quotes in the middle of Jade’s thoughts and dialogue, but they’ve been quoting Marin saying “A-amazing!” over and over (s-sugoi desu…!), she likes to say that a lot.

Alright!

“Since it’s decided, let’s get you dressed up!” (Jade)

“Let’s go! …By the way, what do you mean by stylish?” (Dorami)

“Eh? Ah…” (Jade)

I don’t know about any fashionable clothes or hairstyles and I don’t have any makeup skills either.

The only thing I can say for sure is that she’s going to wear her clothes right now. There are no clothes better than Garnet-san’s hand-me-downs.

In that case…

“Let’s go to a clothing store and have them choose accessories to match your clothes.” (Jade)

“Let’s do it!” (Dorami)

We decided to just refer to a professional’s opinion and left the room.

I asked the owner of the inn about the location of the clothing store and found a splendid store standing there.

T/N: Here we go again with adding splendid (立派, rippa) onto everything lol. I think the author has described nearly 90% of the structures with “splendid”, I just don’t add ‘em most of the time cause it’s redundant.

The store clerk looks so stylish, we should be able to get some good advice!

“This…! This looks good!” (Dorami)

When I was about to call the store clerk, Dorami picked up a necklace.

It was a skull necklace with red stones embedded in its eye sockets.

A skull necklace doesn’t really fit in a cute contest…

“Why do you want a skull necklace?” (Jade)

“It’ll be like the skulls of the monsters that Dorami has defeated.” (Dorami)

So she just wants to show off.

“It’s a bit small for a monster’s skull, but…” (Jade)

“Then, let’s find a big one! Clerk! Clerk!” (Dorami)

“Yes! I’m coming~!” (Clerk)

Pitter-patter! Pitter-patter!

A little girl walked over with the sound of her heels echoing.

She’s a very stylish girl with blonde drills who looks about 10 years old.

“…Are you lost?” (Dorami)

“No, I’m the store clerk, Delmo (デルモ, Derumo).” (Delmo)

“Even though you’re still small, it’s great that you’re working…!” (Dorami)

“I’m not actually a clerk, I’m just helping my Papa and Mama…” (Delmo)

So she was just showing off.

But, it really is admirable of her to want to help her parents.

“I’m only helping out, but are you alright with me?” (Delmo)

“Of course. In fact, you’ll be better than an ordinary clerk.” (Jade)

“I-is that so?” (Delmo)

I nodded at Delmo-chan who looked embarrassed.

Delmo-chan looks about the same age as Dorami, and she also looks very stylish.

Glossy nails, smooth hair, and the way she walked all had a sense of beauty.

She’ll definitely be able to give some good advice.

“We’re looking for accessories that would go well with her outfit, do you have any?” (Jade)

“Dorami wants a big skull!” (Dorami)

“We don’t have any skulls, but we do have accessories that match those clothes! Over here!” (Delmo)

We followed Delmo-chan and she showed us a pendant.

“This is the pendant that was worn by the winner of last year’s Cute Contest.” (Delmo)

“But skulls look cooler.” (Dorami)

“But Dorami, this is the pendant worn by the winner. If you plan to win, wouldn’t this be better?” (Jade)

“Eh? Are you going to participate in the contest?” (Delmo)

“Yeah!” (Dorami)

“In that case, you should also wear makeup, nail polish, and then you should comb your hair.” (Delmo)

“That sounds troublesome…” (Dorami)

Delmo puffed out her cheeks when Dorami didn’t listen to her advice.

But, she didn’t give up and picked up some items.

“We have a lot of combs here. Look, it’s very cute. It’ll make combing your hair enjoyable!” (Delmo)

“Comb (kushi)…” (Dorami)

“Are you interested?” (Delmo)

“When Dorami heard the word ‘comb (kushi)’, she just remembered the skewers (kushiyaki) she ate yesterday. That was really delicious…” (Dorami)

T/N: Comb (クシ, Kushi) and Skewer (串焼き, Kushiyaki) both have ‘kushi’. Of course, it’s a joke lost in translation.

“Jeez! Listen to me seriously! I won 1st place last year! It’s a great opportunity that I’m even giving you advice!” (Delmo)

“You were 1st place?! A-amazing!” (Dorami)

“I-it’s not that amazing…” (Delmo)

Delmo-chan’s face is bright red. She’s all embarrassed and fidgety.

So she won 1st place… No wonder I thought she was so stylish.

Delmo-chan cleared her throat to calm herself down.

“And, if you’re going to the contest, you should wear high heels like I do.” (Delmo)

“Those shoes look like they’d be hard to walk in….” (Dorami)

“If you get used to it like I do, you can walk elegantly. Look!” (Delmo)

Pitter-patter! Pitter-patter!

Delmo-chan showed us her elegant gait.

“Like this?” (Dorami)

Nosshinosshi! Nosshinosshi!

“Not at all, you’re just ruining your cuteness.” (Delmo)

“Thank you! You’re cute too, Delmo!” (Dorami)

“O-of course I am! I’m careful about my beauty! I’m the one who’ll win 1st place this year!” (Delmo)

“Umu. Do your best!” (Dorami)

“…What’s with that nonchalance? Could it be that you’re actually a well-known contestant?” (Delmo)

“Dorami is a bit of a celebrity in the Sundeil Kingdom!” (Dorami)

“No wonder you have that aura… What’s your record?” (Delmo)

“Dorami went through many battlefields and got out unscathed!” (Dorami)

“So you’re an experienced contestant… But, I won’t give up first place! If I win, it’ll make this store even more famous!” (Delmo)

T/N: 荒らし (troll), but that won’t work here. I had to consult with a few people lol.

“You’re such a good girl!” (Dorami)

“It’s just a matter of course… I just want to help Papa and Mama…” (Delmo)

Her cheeks turned red as she was embarrassed and twirled her hair with her fingers.

“A-anyway, if you want to win, high heels are indispensable. Your posture will become a lot better if you just wear these! We have high heels that are like mine so, buy them!” (Delmo)

Even though she’s also aiming for the championship, she’s still cooperating with Dorami…

Dorami doesn’t look interested in the high heels, but we shouldn’t let her goodwill go unnoticed.

“Then, we’ll buy a pair.” (Jade)

“Thank you for your purchase!” (Delmo)

And so, bought the recommended high heels and left the store.
