Vampire Infection

Chapter 26 - Path of a Bookworm

"Ughh…" About half way through the book she began to wake up, she'd been unconscious much longer than James had but it had given me plenty of time to read the parts of the book I was interested in, particularly: Applications of Magic, Origin of Mana, Elemental Mana and Types of Mana.

But for now I was more interested as to what path this woman would choose, I waited for about five more minutes before she finally fully woke and stared at me blankly at first I thought something had gone wrong with <<The Turning>> but then… "You are?" She asked with an expression of confusion, "Oh… I was reading." Before even waiting for me to answer she turned back to her book and I had a flashback of what had happened last time.

"No!" I said suddenly, taking the book away before she could collapse onto the pages again. 'I really chose a troublesome one didn't I?' I thought bitterly as I looked at the woman who just looked at me blankly as she tried to reach for her book.

"Name?" I asked bluntly, "Book." She replied, "Name?" I asked again with more force in my voice. "Book" she said again. "I order you, give me your name!" I shouted in anger but to my surprise and amazement. "Book." She continued to reply.

"How did you?" I asked in shock and confusion as I stared at her, even James with his strong willpower had been utterly unable to resist my commands with his strength was she on the path of <<The King>> as well?

"Fine." I said giving in, passing her back the book and surprisingly she didn't fall asleep again but this time began to read the pages of the book with a look of focus on her face as she scanned every word quickly before turning the page.

"Name?" I asked again, hoping now that she had her book she'd be more cooperative, "Kelly." She said shortly, "How did you resist my commands?" I asked again partly wondering if she'd even know the answer in the first place.

"My Path." Was the unexpected answer that I received, "Which is?" I said looking at her with interest, if there was a path that allowed someone to resist the commands of their lord, 'Should I kill her?' I couldn't help but think, if she wasn't under my control she was a potential threat. "No need, I'm harmless." She said not turning her head from the book, 'Mind reading?' I thought. "Don't need to, all tyrants would think the same." She replied matter-of-factly.

"So what are you?" I asked again, "Knowledge." Was the only reply I received before she closed the book and walked over to a shelf to grab another, I watched as the wandered through the shelves before picking out a book and returning to her seat and began to 'scan' the pages as she had before as if she wasn't reading the pages but copying them into her mind in an instant.

"Your path is knowledge?" I asked confused, "No, my path is Librarian. I am knowledge." She said, correcting me. "VI, what's the Path of Librarian?" I assumed that she already knew of VI's existence so I didn't pay attention to her reaction.

<<The Librarian is Knowledge. >>

The answer I received was confusing but it aligned with what Kelly had already told me, but what did being knowledge mean? "Everything I see I remember." She said to me and for the first time turning to look at me with a smile on her face, "Thank you." She said simply. She didn't say for what but I knew what she was thankful for, "Why?" I couldn't help but ask, shouldn't the normal reaction to call me a monster or something similar? She was too strange.

"Because I love reading." She said simply with a genuine smile on her face before continuing, "Now I have time to read everything but not only can I read everything, I can remember everything I've read as if I have it in front of me again. It's amazing." She said with an expression of joy and awe on her face before turning back to read and I couldn't help but think I'd accidentally performed a good deed.

"You're welcome?" I said still slightly confused by her response, "One year." She said suddenly, turning her head back from her book, "One year what?" I asked, "Give me one year to read every book here, then we can leave and you can destroy the society." She said frankly but I was more surprised that she knew my goal to begin with; it was something that she couldn't possibly know because apart from the person giving me the trials I'd never told another person what I was doing.

She seemed to notice my confusion and hesitated for a second before giving me an answer, "I can ask one question a day, I'll receive the answer to that question after I've asked it. I asked why you killed them…" She said the last part as quiet as a whisper but I know that she knew I'd hear her regardless.

"You could've killed me and you didn't." She said quietly but I could see her face blush slightly as she said it despite trying to obscure my view of her face with her hair. "I don't have to listen to your orders but I will… because you made my dream come true even if you didn't mean to."

"I…" I was dumbfounded with no idea how to respond, all I had wanted was someone to help me in this unfamiliar world and whilst I'd gotten more than that by turning her into a vampire I'd accidentally helped her.

A few minutes went by in silence, this was the first time that I'd felt as indecisive as this in a long time. Her ability was certainly useful but could I trust someone who apparently knew everything and couldn't be forced to obey me even if she said she'd do what I told her to?

"Why didn't you answer me the first time I asked your name?" I asked suddenly, clearly catching her off guard as if it was a question she hadn't expected me to ask but she quickly collected and calmed herself. "You took my book…" She mumbled quietly, clearly embarrassed about the reason but I could tell she was telling the truth.

"Hahahah, I'll trust you then." I said with a laugh, giving her a genuine smile. "But." I said suddenly making her flinch slightly, "If you ever betray me, ever try to harm me or ever try to stop me after I've decided on something… You will die." I said staring her dead in the eye, a grin still hanging on my face as I stared at her.

Not caring at all she smiled back, "Don't worry." Before turning her head back to the book as she began to read again. I sighed and got up from the chair before starting to walk towards the entrance, "Look for the Control Building." I heard her say from behind me before it went silent again.

Without a second word I walked to the entrance and left the library behind.

….

"What a strange man…" Kelly lifted her head from the book and stared at him as he walked away, "I can't wait to see what you do." She mumbled before starting to read once more.
