When Love Beckons Twice

Chapter 292 - What Kind of a Rubbish Joke Was This?

The dawn had already broken when Wu Zhang returned to the hospital after changing into a set of fresh clothes and headed straight to the private ward where Song Jia had been shifted to, from the Intensive Care Unit. Her surgery had been completed and they were now just waiting for her to wake up.

Even though his clothes were now clean but his appearance couldn't look any messier. His hair looked tousled after being brushed back by his fingers multiple times. His eyes looked red and swollen due to the lack of sleep and his stubble just added more to his unkempt look, clearly expressing how tired he was.

While he was on his way, he ran into Song Guang, who was just coming out from another room, which was the chamber of Song Jia's head surgeon. Rather than looking even the slightest bit relaxed, Song Guang looked even more troubled than what he last saw him to be.

"Is everything fine?" Wu Zhang asked as he approached him. The old man looked rather troubled and Wu Zhang even felt that he had grown a few decades more in just a few hours. His shoulders were drooped and there was not even the slightest bit of happiness in his voice.

Wu Zhang waited for him to answer and the old man just sighed, as he transferred his cane from one hand to the other. "Come with me."

He signaled Wu Zhang to follow him to the lounge and Wu Zhang nodded before he started walking on the old man's lead. For some reason, his instincts told him that

Once they were inside the private lounge, where Song Chen was already seated, looking equally tired like the other two men, they went to join him. Song Guang joined his son on the long sofa, whereas Wu Zhang took the couch with only a single seat that was placed opposite to them.

Wu Zhang waited for them to speak and Song Guang just pushed a file before him, that was Song Jia's medical reports. Wu Zhang frowned but picked the file nevertheless and flipped the pages one by one. With every passing minute, his frown deepened and his jaw clenched hard.

"What... what is this?" He asked in shock looking at the two men seated opposite him. His voice reflected the disbelief that he was in right now.

"Our Jia is sick Wu Zhang." Song Chen's voice cracked in the end when he answered and wiped the teardrop that slid down from his eyes and fell on his cheek. As much as Wu Zhang did not want to believe it, their admission to the report, and their action did not allow him to.

"Her... Her leukemia has relapsed. And her condition has just worsened after being shot." Song Chen had his fingers of either hand tangled, while he continuously kept rubbing the side of his thumbs together.

Wu Zhang was already blaming himself for whatever happened. Song Jia got shot in order to save him and now even after they had successfully taken out the bullet, he was told that her leukemia had recurred and the bullet wounds had worsened her condition.

"When did this happen?" He looked to be in a daze because he found it impossible to come to terms with this bomb of news that was dropped on him. He flipped the pages once again restlessly, as he ran his fingers through his hair in desperation to find something that would tell him that this was not real.

"Are you sure this report has no mistake? And how could this happen all of a sudden? She was totally fine before I left for F City." Every fiber of his body was hoping for this news to be a mistake. The little spark of hope in his eyes, that was flickering before its demise was screaming to be told that there was an error in the report. Or... or maybe it was just a dream and he might wake up from it?

How much he wished right now for all of this to be a dream because it couldn't be true.

It couldn't be, because he was not ready to accept this reality!

First, she got shot and now her leukemia had recurred! Why the f.u.c.k was this happening?!

"This report is correct. They discovered it during her surgery otherwise it might have not been discovered for a few more months. They are still running tests on her to find out the severity of it." Song Guang said, his hand still holding on to his cane, to keep it standing straight in front of him.

"So... does it means she still does not know about it?" He asked looking at the father and son.

Song Guang shook his head. "No, she doesn't."

He tried his best to not let his voice crack as he said, "Then let's just not tell her about it. It would devastate her." He himself was unable to accept any of this, so he could not even imagine how Song Jia would feel if she found out about it.

"That is of no use." Song Guang shook his head. "She has always known that she will be at constant risk of it relapsing again and has always been prepared for it. Moreover, once the symptoms start to show, she will find out anyway."

Wu Zhang just nodded his head and the two men left after Wu Zhang said that he would stay behind to look after her because they had been there all night and now needed to rest. Song Chen placed his hand on Wu Zhang's shoulder and gently pressed it before leaving, and Wu Zhang bobbed his head in acknowledgment.

How could life be so unfair?

He had never loved anyone before as much as he loved Song Jia. He was the ric.h.e.s.t businessman in the country, with all the resources and power that one could think of. And now when he had finally found someone, whom he wanted to spend all his life with, life started playing this dirty game of push and pull with him.

It brought her to him once after getting shot and was now playing another game to take her away. It was like letting a person gain an experience of heaven to only be thrown out of it later on. And as if that was not enough, then giving him false hope for the next time, and when that next time came, sending them back away from the doorstep, after ruthlessly shutting the door in his face. His heart had barely come to a slight rest when her surgery finally concluded successfully, but then he was told about her leukemia and he felt his world-shattering again that he had just started rebuilding.

What kind of a rubbish joke was this?

He wanted to give that woman all the love that he had, all the happiness that she could ask for, and all the smiles that she could hold in her heart, but here she was, lying on that bed inside the hospital, fighting for her life and all he could do was just sit outside helplessly and watch everything unfold with bitterness spreading all over his heart.

He was smart enough to understand that it was already not easy to combat Leukemia when it resurfaced for the second time and that too, now when she had been shot. Her immunity was already at its lowest and this leukemia would just eat her up further, reducing her chances to an even lower level.

But as much as he was smart, he was also a man who was head over heels in love with that woman, and right now all reasons and logics were failing him, He did not know how, but he just knew that she would have to live, to be with him, to love him and be loved by him.

She would have to live and he would do everything that was possible to make it happen.
