I didn’t think anything more could happen before I left, but on my way to meet with Piao Zheng that night, I received a call from Yang Yali using Ye Lin’s cell phone.

She said that Ye Lin’s sister had been admitted into the emergency room, and then Ye Lin had gotten into an accident on his way to the hospital.

My hand holding the phone became cold.

“How is he? Where’s his sister?”

Yang Yali’s voice was not polite, “He is still alive, and his sister has been saved. I called you because he was unconscious, and still calling your name. He’s at City No. 1 Hospital, so are you coming or not?”

I hung up and sat speechless for a while as Xichen began parking the car.

“Xichen, I have to go to the hospital.”

He restarted the car without a word.

I immediately saw Yang Yali when I walked into the hospital. She was sitting on a chair with her head lowered. Because it was night time, the waiting room was pretty empty.

As I walked over, she raised her head and looked at me with bloodshot eyes.

“Jian Anjie, I didn’t expect you to be this affectionate and righteous.”

She stood up and sneered, “I told you back then to go away and never appear in front of him again. I thought that he would finally only look at me, but I found that I was wrong. In his heart, the love you gave him was unforgettable, and my waiting has been worthless. Sadly, he even attempted suicide for you, while you lived at ease abroad. Jian Anjie, you don’t know what love is at all!”

This statement made me frown deeply.

“Miss Yang, please be careful with your words and deeds,” a cold voice said.

Yang Yali finally saw the person behind me, and her expression froze.

“Xi Xichen?”

Her face twitched as if coming to a sudden realization, “So it is, so it is!”

“We are in a hospital, please take the current situation into consideration, Miss Yang.”

Xi Xichen grabbed my waist, intending to lead me forward.

“What is it Mr. Xi? Are you afraid of what I’m going to say?” Yang Yali’s tone suddenly became decisive, “I never expected it, but now I see that your goal has always been her. Mr. Xi, in terms of ulterior motives, no one can compare to you.”

This sentence, heavy with meaning, made me look up at the person beside me. His face had grown dark.

“Jian Anjie, you know Ye Lin has always been short of money, but he has never taken any money from me,” continued Yang Yali. “Five years ago, his sister’s condition deteriorated to the point where she had to be hospitalized. At that point someone came to me, sent by the manager of the TV station my mother works at. He told me that I should help Ye Lin sign a contract that would enlist him as an artist. If he signed the contract, he would get 1 million, and the income would get divided equally within the company. The contract period would be eight years, but there was a stipulation that prohibited him from going abroad in the first five years.

“Ye Lin trusted me, so he signed it. Yes, I was also selfish. I didn’t want him to go abroad, but I used to think that Xi would not have such an ulterior motive for this contract. I thought he came to me personally because it was about someone I loved, and he that didn’t want Ye Lin to drag down Miss Jian’s family. I never expected in the end that I would have more heart than him!

“President Xi, you are really powerful and have a lot of foresight. You knew that you would be pursuing your sister five years later,” Yang Yali looked at me with ridicule.

I found myself shaking.

Xi Xichen’s cold hand covered the back of mine.

“Yang Yali, is what you said true?” I asked in a trembling voice.

“Why don’t you ask him?” Yang Yali sneered.

I turned to look at Xi Xichen. His face looked gloomy, his eyes completely unreadable.

“Xi….”

“You—are you actually asking me?” His expression was solemn.

“I want to know,” I said surprisingly calm.

Xi Xichen dropped my hand. The sudden disappearance of his ice cold touch actually made my heart ache.

His eyes were bottomless pools as he smiled sadly, “Yes.”

We were in a hospital, and I didn’t want to discuss this further with him there, so I whispered, “I’ll go in and see him now. You should go back to the car.”

I wanted to talk to him later.

He stared at me for a while, then suddenly turned on his heels and left.

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

“If anything happens to Ye Lin, I will never forgive you for as long as I live.”

These were Yang Yali’s last words to me before leaving the hospital.

Oh, she won’t forgive me? Who does she think she is?

I walked to the hospital bed with a fake smile plastered to my face and looked down at Ye Lin. His face was pale, and he was covered in injuries. His breathing was so weak,I was afraid it would stop completely at any moment.

I walked out to check on Ye Lin’s younger sister next. I remembered her as a fat and very cute girl, with dimples whenever she laughed.

But the girl lying in front of me was bony and lifeless.

A passing nurse told me that she was suffering from a chronic autoimmune disease caused by a transmission dysfunction between her nerve and muscle junctions. She had been able to be discharged home before, to be cared for by her family, but this time she would have to stay for a longer period due to the state of deterioration she was in.

I stood there staring at her silently for a long time.
