Chapter 100-Worried Out Of One’s Wits Part 2

After loosening its hold on the disciples below, {heavenly punishment} wrapped itself around a Wutong tree immediately, contracting in on itself, trying to pull Gu Peijiu away from the black vortex’s gravitational force!

As the black vortex became an entrance to a cavern of terrifying demonic qi, Gu Peijiu used one hand to pull out another spirit-dispersing yellow talisman from her sleeve.  Her other hand still tightly holding onto her ayara, Gu Peijiu let fly the yellow talisman, directly into the black vortex.

The second the yellow talisman entered the black cavern, the demonic qi dissipated, and an indescribable divine energy flowed out instead.

Divine……?!

Pure, divine qi, like the celestial light of a deity taking pity on the world.

Only the former residence of a deity could retain such pure……divine qi.

Gu Peijiu’s heart was now very troubled.

The black vortex just kept slowly expanding, its gravitational pull growing exponentially stronger!

And Chu Yao’s flying swords were slowly failing.

Glancing down at Chu Yao, Gu Peijiu took out a scroll, whispering to it lowly: “Take the disciples to where [Order] is!”

This cavern was……too strange!

Before Chu Yao even knew what was happening, an intense celestial light shone done from the sky, a vast expanse of white filling her sight.  When her senses recovered, there were no more flying swords, only her one sword laying by her side, and she knew she was no longer in Kuzhu village.

Instead, she and the junior disciples were in a deserted wasteland.  Apparently the pragmatic Gu Peijiu had used a large-scale teleportation scroll to help them escape.

A disciple, recovering from his shock, asked cautiously: “Senior Chu, just now, what……”

Picking up her sword, Chu Yao pondered the strange white garment and the black vortex she’d seen before the white light had carried her away.  Then, glancing at the junior disciples, Chu Yao suddenly frowned: “Ye Ze, Chang Nian, Li Liu……where are those three?!”

Startled, the disciples looked around at each other, until one of them finally said: “Um……you told them to go outside the village to check for people, it seems they didn’t make it back before we……left.”

Squeezing the hilt of her sword tight, Chu Yao commanded: “All of you, go to Lijia village, it’s near Kuzhu village, and find the people of [Order]!  I will return to Kuzhu village and bring our people back!”

Chu Yao couldn’t leave Gu Peijiu alone without assistance!

Unfortunately, the range of the teleportation scroll had been large indeed, and when Chu Yao finally made it back to Kuzhu village, she was met with a dreadful sight.  Her eyes widening, for a moment she forgot to breathe——

What had once been a village was now nothing more than a deep pit.

As if the entire village had been sucked up into the black vortex……

And every last person had disappeared.

Things down the mountain where already in chaos by the time Xia Ge got there.  Jianfeng disciples were fighting Demon Puppets and Demon Sect disciples.  Several Danfeng disciples were helping women and children, along with the old and the infirm, up the mountain, away from the melee.

Tucking away the doll Gu Peijiu had given her in a safe place, Xia Ge joined the Danfeng disciples assisting people, running into Lu Qie in the process.

“Ai, Junior Brother, you’ve come to help too?”  Lu Qie, assisting an elderly man, obviously didn’t know about the Demon Sect spy allegations yet and smiled as soon as he saw Xia Ge.

“Mmm……has Senior Brother seen a Junior Sister like me?”  Even as she was speaking, Xia Ge abruptly pushed Lu Qie to one side as she dodged backwards at the same time, “Senior Brother, be careful!”

Whoosh——

A feathered arrow, dense demonic qi entwined about it, struck where Lu Qie had been standing just a moment before, hitting a rock with a loud clang.  Carefully pulling the arrow out of the rock, Xia Ge used her lingqiao to sense the dark qi.  But Li Qie, still supporting the elderly man, visibly paled when he saw the arrow’s tip: “It’s soul poison?!”

Xia Ge was startled: “This arrow has soul poison?”

Lu Qie: “I’m not a fighter, I don’t know if Demon Sect weapons usually have carry soul poison!  Brother, let’s hurry our retreat!”

Taking stock of the situation, Xia Ge found it overwhelmingly unfavorable.  Arrows were flying wildly as even the Jianfeng disciples were slowly making a retreat, and Xia Ge couldn’t help asking: “Where’s Jianfeng’s senior disciple?!”

Lu Qie: “I don’t know!”

Where was Mao Qing……

“Senior Brother, you continue on without me, I’ve got to go find someone!”  Xia Ge told Li Qie urgently.

The Jianfeng disciples who’d been chasing Xia Ge had now joined the fight, paying no more attention to their pursuit.  Taking out her sickle, Xia Ge began searching through the confusion for Mao Qing.

The C-rank Demon Puppets were not that scary in and by themselves.  It was instead the possibility of soul poison on their weapons that was terrifying.  Therefore, since there was so many of them, and Xia Ge didn’t trust her dodging abilities to be infallible, she used {soul-controlling voice} to force two puppets to protect her, one on either side.

After a long, fraught search, Xia Ge finally found Mao Qing inside the sweets shop.

Ordering her two bespelled puppets to guard the door, Xia Ge saw the sweets shop operator was already long gone.  Only a dazed Mao Qing was left, standing frozen in place.

“What are you doing here?  Hurry up and go back up the mountain!  It’s too dangerous here!”

Now that she’d found Mao Qing in one piece, Xia Ge was relieved enough to put her sickle away.  Reaching out a hand, Xia Ge grabbed Mao Qing by the wrist, intending to drag her away.  Who expected that when Xia Ge tugged on Mao Qing’s hand, a large amount of cherry candies would fall to the floor, scattering everywhere.

Xia Ge: “……”  Did the master send you down the mountain to buy candy?!

“Xia Wuyin,” Mao Qing gazed at Xia Ge, her mouth suddenly curving up into a smile, “Your eyes are very beautiful.”

Out of instinct, Xia Ge covered her eyes, but then realized that after her last upgrade, the violet eyes that came from using {soul-controlling voice} should only last three minutes.  From the time she’d used it till finding Mao Qing, the duration had to have been longer than three minutes.  So Mao Qing really was just complimenting Xia Ge’s pretty eyes.

Embarrassing.

“Thank you,” Xia Ge said bashfully, “C’mon, let’s get out of here quickly.”

“One candy isn’t enough.”  Mao Qing did not budge from where she stood, looking at Xia Ge straight on and explaining: “I wanted more, that’s why I’m here.”

Xia Ge: “……”  Did I ask you to justify yourself?

Xia Ge: “Tell you what, when the Demon Sect is gone, I’ll buy you three catties of candy, alright?  Hurry up, let’s go little ancestor!”  Don’t you already have three catties of ungifted candy?

Mao Qing contemplated the cherry candies on the floor: “They’ve fallen.”

Xia Ge felt they both must’ve been recently kicked in the head by a donkey.  Hurriedly swooping the candies up off the floor, Xia Ge stuffed them into Mao Qing’s pockets: “Here, they’re not on the floor anymore.”

Mao Qing innocently protested: “Why did you do that?  I haven’t paid for them yet.”

Xia Ge: “……”  You really are a fucking little ancestor.

Demon Puppets were already attacking the two puppets Xia Ge had left to guard the door.  Time was running out.  The Demon Puppets might not be particularly refined, but their puppet master had them attacking in swarms.  While the two Demon Puppets Xia Ge had nabbed would be completely obedient, they’d only be able to hold out for so long.

Carefully watching as Xia Ge put a spirit stone on the empty counter to ‘pay’ for the candy, Mao Qing asked: “Somebody seems to be guarding outside, are they your people?”

Xia Ge opened her eyes wide in a pretense of sincerity, spouting some nonsense: “How would I have ‘people’ to guard the door?  It’s just a Jianfeng disciple who’s helping me. Now the candies have been picked up and paid for.  Are you finally ready to leave?”

Never mind that it was, in fact, her two Demon Puppets warding off the other Demon Puppets at the entrance.

Mao Qing gave Xia Ge a look: “You’re not afraid?”

Xia Ge: “……our Jianfeng brother will protect us.”

“But I don’t trust Jianfeng disciples very much,” Mao Qing sighed, “I’m very scared.”

“Only if it’s you protecting me, then I won’t be afraid.”

Xia Ge: “Mao Qing……”

Mao Qing placidly gazed at Xia Ge.

Xia Ge: “I think you must have fallen ill today……”

It really was strange.  If the Mao Qing of before had talked like this, Xia Ge would’ve gotten goosebumps.

It was entirely possible though that Mao Qing was so frightened by the Demon Sect attack, that she felt……only familiar people were trustworthy?

Still, Xia Ge wasn’t sure what exactly was going on with Mao Qing, yet Xia Ge’s intuition told her that Mao Qing should not be acting like……this.

Mao Qing lowered her eyelids, a shadow flashing through her eyes underneath long eyelashes, and she whispered: “I really don’t like Jianfeng people.”

“Oh, I see.”  Xia Ge then asked casually, “Do you still want to become a Tian-level liandan master?  I told you I believed you could do it.”

Mao Qing’s expression was confused: “Tian-level liandan master?  No, that’s not right, I said I wanted to become a Diji-level liandan master.”

Maybe this really was Mao Qing……?

“Ah, my mistake, I remembered wrong,” Xia Ge replied, “Anyways, if you don’t feel comfortable with that Jianfeng disciple, it’s fine.  I’ll protect you.  But we really need to go now.”

This time Mao Qing finally responded with a low: “Mmm.”

Dragging Mao Qing out the sweets shop, Xia Ge calmly made sure to stay in front of Mao Qing.  As the two Demon Puppets cleared a path for Xia Ge and Mao Qing through the turbulent battle, Xia Ge spotted a bright light shining not far off.  It came from a young man dressed in Jianfeng blue, wielding a sword that blazed with extremely fierce lingqi.  Fending off the Demon Puppets, the young man was surrounded by other Jianfeng disciples, and together they were making a battle formation.  Pleasantly surprised, Xia Ge exclaimed: “It’s Chang Lan!  Mao Qing, I’ll take you over there——”

Then, from their rear, Xia Ge heard the cold sound of an arrow flying through the air.  Pulling at Mao Qing’s hand, Xia Ge tried to yank Mao Qing aside, out of the path of the arrow.  Yet a disobedient Mao Qing stood rooted to the ground, instead wrapping one arm around Xia Ge from behind, and murmuring into Xia Ge’s ear: “But I want to protect you too……”

“You……”

Thuck——

The noise the arrow made as it penetrated flesh was terrifying and ghastly.

Stiffly turning around to look at the girl whose head was now resting on her shoulders, Xia Ge’s pupils shrank.  Mao Qing’s lips were purple and a feather arrow had pierced her left abdomen, the crimson blood already spreading out into a great, horrible stain.

“Mao Qing!!!”

The arrow would be poisoned!
