She thought Su Jiaojiao’s proposal is a good idea. She hates her status as a girl, as it was inconvenient to do anything.

Su Jiaojiao: “Your hair won’t look good if you cut it yourself. I’ll take you to the barber to cut it short later. As thanks for the firewood recently, I’ll pay for you.”

“No, no, it’s alright. I don’t have any money, this is just paying the interest…”

Ji Xuan hurriedly waved her hands.

However, Su Jiaojiao had made up her mind.

Ji Xuan couldn’t help but smile as she looked at Su Jiaojiao’s back. This sister is really nice.

Su Jiaojiao asked, “How is your grandpa?”

“He’s already much better. The doctor told him to recuperate well and not to move too much. If he followed orders, he’ll be better in a month or two.” Ji Xuan said crisply, “Sister, I brought things to sell this time. I should be able to sell them for a few dollars. I’ll come to you after I finish, okay?”

“Okay.” Su Jiaojiao smiled and changed the topic.

When two people are in a conversation, time flies much faster.

When they arrived at town, the two agreed on a good place to meet, then separated.

Su Jiaojiao first went to the supply and marketing agency to buy some daily necessities. Then, with the help of the matchmaker system, she avoided the patrolling people and ran to the black market to buy rabbits.

Specially bred domestic rabbits also existed in the 70s. They had a less gamey taste and more tender meat, but the people who bred them weren’t easy to find.

Fortunately, she had a godly cheat.

Rabbit meat is just a bit more expensive than pork. Su Jiaojiao decided to be generous and bought three for a few dollars. Then, she left contently.

When she turned to the other side of the alley, she saw a familiar figure. Ji Xuan and a person seemed to be making a deal. After giving out everything in the basket, she received a sum of money.

The way they talked, it seemed to be different from the shy girl who had just been in front of her.

As she looked at the money in her hand, Ji Xuan’s face finally relaxed a little, with a smile on her face, but it faded quickly. She turned and left with the empty basket.

She had taken two steps only to find someone on the other side of the road looking at her.

Ji Xuan looked at her from the corner, but when she saw Su Jiaojiao, her face became stiff, and she turned her face. A flattering smile was shown on her dirty little face.

Su Jiaojiao smiled helplessly, shook her head, and signalled her to go to the meeting place.

Ji Xuan breathed a sigh of relief.

Su Jiaojiao at the young ‘man’ whose hair had been cut short. She was thin, her face was still dirty, her facial features were still beautiful, but she was a bit less feminine. Her peach blossom eyes were passionate, but her thick eyebrows have lessened that, making her seem a bit more heroic. Because of her thinness, her facial contours are hard and her chin is sharp.

Her hair was only about two centimeters short, showing a nice neck and white ears.

Ji Xuan was quite uncomfortable. She fiddled with her ears unnaturally, and looked awkward, but she looked at Su Jiaojiao cautiously, for fear of being unrecognizable.

Su Jiaojiao pushed the bike out of the town with Ji Xuan sitting in the back. When there was no one around, she started to ride the bicycle, let Ji Xuan sit in the back seat, and whispered, “You are pretty brave.”

Ji Xuan pursed her lips and lowered her head in embarrassment, “I want to earn money, but Grandpa won’t let me. I usually exchange the goods at a people’s commune, but it’s different now.”

The goods exchanged in the commune have a much lower value than the goods in the black market. However, the black market is illegal, so people could only trade honestly. Ji Xuan only took this risk because they were desperate and had racked up a big pile of debt. [1]

Su Jiaojiao curiously asked, “Have you encountered patrols before?”

“I have encountered them twice, but it’s fine as long as you run fast.” As Ji Xuan saw that Su Jiaojiao didn’t look down on herself, nor objected to her actions, she relaxed and said softly, “I know their patrolling schedule, and they seem to go to the black market to exchange things themselves. In general, they turn a blind eye. Unless the people patrolling are really zealous, they won’t catch you.” [2]

“Oh.” Su Jiaojiao blinked, “Aren’t you afraid?”

“Not afraid.” Ji Xuan said thoughtfully, “My grandfather is afraid, but I’m not. Worrying about these is useless when you’re dead. I also tell people the time, place and amount of the transaction in advance, so they’re done soon…”

Ji Xuan said, turned into a treasure, and kept talking about his strategy.

She hadn’t been trying her luck, but already had a grasp of the unspoken rules after a few forays. She also knew several people, and as long as she had arranged the transaction details beforehand, the process wouldn’t take more than a minute.

It was a little troublesome, but caution is always good.

Su Jiaojiao listened to her and admired her.

Su Jiaojiao didn’t dare to do anything. Seeing that Ji Xuan was so self-sufficient[3], she couldn’t help but respect her.

Armos D. Platypus: Yet more details that will never be talked about again. Yup, that’s Married to a Disabled Man in the 70s at its finest.

[1] The commune is like a communal hub/trade thingie? Also, this was way too broken to understand…nothern written Chinese is hard to understand ok…

[2] Congratulations. Corruption still exists, even when communism is a thing.

[3] This should probably be another word. Not sure.
