Systems And Makers

Chapter 7 - The Desora Interactive

Having a mascot gives the company an attitude as well as a face, just like Sonic the Hedgehog gives to Sega. I remember Sega through its blue and speedy mascot.

And if it was not for Sonic, I would have no f.u.c.k.i.n.g clue what a Sega is exactly, as I was born after the golden age of gaming. Sonic the Hedgehog is more easier to remember than the gaming company that had invented him in the first place. All to capitalize on the market at the time. Also, to challenge Mario from Nintendo.

In my opinion, Mario is not as cool as Sonic. He is definitely not as cute as Kirby. Hell. Mario is probably one of the lamest mascots ever, being a fat plumber who has no real idea about plumbing. Yet despite that, Mario is one of the most recognizable icon in the modern world due to branding.

As such, Krispy Kirby is my brand. An intellectual property of mine if one to be technical about it.

There is a reason to why I am not naming the mascot as Desora, opting to use the name instead. I will not waste time explaining the reason, as it is irrelevant to my current task. I will if it does become sort of relevant.

I begin working on the game like a normal person. That means opening up the pre-installed code editor somewhere on the desktop within the laptop in front of me. The same laptop that has Game Creation System installed on it.

The System is installed my phone too. More correctly to say that the laptop and the phone are merely interfaces to the Game Creation System.

Anyway, the technical term for the editor that I am using to code is called an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The programming languages used within the IDE by the game developer from this world are not that much different from Earth.

That is to be expected since everyone kind of speak English. Everyone in this massive country anyway, and certainly, there are other languages in the world. Not that it matters to me, as I know every single language there is.

If I do not, I will learn it instantly. That is one of my powers. A very common powers apparently as the others all have it. It is how we are able to understand each other in some capacity.

I begin to code the game, working diligently for the next hour or so. In retrospect, I should have done a bit of planning on paper, but it is not a very complicated game. Like how complicate it is to have just a burning ball of fire flying through a bunch of pipes, trying not to get drenched in the process.

Not very complicated at all.

Once the codes are done, I need to work on graphics. That is a bit more difficult since I am not an artist by any mean. My 5 points in Graphic demonstrate this fact. Thus, I decide to search the web for some free arts.

I make a note to hire a graphic designer to prevent this from happening. Or I can just create someone out of thing air. That would consider to be cheating, right? What if I make that person dumb and stupid to balance out his or her awesome artistic skill? Still considered to be cheating though.

"Yes. It is, and I will help you with the graphic."

Desora offers, and the offer makes me quirks my eyes. What does he mean by that exactly? If he used his power to do so, it would still be considered as cheating. It is not any different from me doing it.

"Sure?"

I answer and watch Desora creates a stack of paper and a pen out of thin air. He then forms Kirby-like arms and legs, just so he could hold the pen and draw some pipes on the paper.

Several pipes, actually.

And if I ever wanted to see Kirby working on making sprite, I think this is as close as it could get asides from giving life to a real Kirby. That is actually not a good thing.

Seeing all the cartoonish pipes that Desora has drawn for me gives me an idea. Maybe I should render the whole game in a cartoonish style. Must like Yoshi Island or something of the sort. It would appeal to a lot of people and give my company a cute image.

Nothing ever goes wrong with cuteness.

I have learned that from watching a lot of anime back in those lazy days. Before I had run into Desora, promptly becoming his host. My d.e.s.i.r.e for cuteness cannot be helped since I was born in modern day Earth, but that is enough about that.

Integrating the graphics Desora has created is not that difficult, considering my programming skills. It is noticeable that my skills do not increase whatsoever, thus I fix that immediately.

Working on anything should improve my programming skills, thus making me a better developer. Not necessary a game developer. Programming a game like Krispy Kirby does not increase my skill all that much, but it does a little.

I would gain more points for complicated games like Overwatch. A huge team of dedicated coders and graphic designers would be needed for that. I will probably hire actual people for my second or maybe third game. Proper employee, not a free one like Desora.

Since every game in this world has networking, I decide to add that as well. The game obviously is not a multiplayer game, but it can use the network to upload score for the ranking. That does mean that I need to have a server.

Or just use a free one. There are plenty of free server available, but they will not be able to handle the load that I have in mind. Too bad I have no choice as I have no… oh wait. I do have some money.

Thank you, big sister.

Purchasing a server is as easy as 1, 2 and 3.

Once a server is setup, I test the game with Desora, finding the gameplay not that much different from the original game, Flappy Bird. But Krispy Kirby is way more hilarious. As hilarious as seeing Kirby being on fire and trying run through a bunch of pipes, looking for a way to douse the flames.

"This is hilarious, and I think you have something here, William. Let me play it a few more times before you repack it as an installation package. I might be able to find some bugs. Delicious bugs."

Desora compliments and jumps into the digital space of the game to take place of Krispy Kirby.

I chuckle at that and decide to check my phone, seeing that my girlfriend is calling me back again. She is pissed off that I did not bother to call her after that simple word.

Well. I will cook her for a bit before making her day. Even though it is somewhat mean to keep her like that, it is for the best. I play to win. Nothing else is acceptable.

Once Desora has enough fun, I package the game as an installation file and submit it to the competition for tomorrow. Good thing there is no preliminary reviewing or anything of the sort, or the game would never have passed through that.

It looks cheaply made after all, and it is due to having spent only like half a day on it at most.

Furthermore, people tend to judge things on visual alone rather, and regardless of how good my game concept and design are, if nobody gives it a try, it would not go far.

That makes me think, and I decide to set up a social account for Desora Interactive. Once I get a lot of followers, I should be able to showcase new games and get the ball rolling much more easier.

Oh. I almost forgot to register Desora Interactive as an actual company. It cost $500 to do so, and since I have some money now, I did not bother to hesitate. I will pay my big sister and parents back later.

After all of that, I decide to check up on my girlfriend. Her name is Jennifer by the way. I probably have not mention it. She is an aspiring idol. Or trying to be one. It is not going well for her at all, and if I did not work on a Game Creation System, I probably work on an Idol Management System.

One thing at a time, so I guess Jennifer will have to struggle for a while.

"Why are you here?"

My girlfriend is not really happy to see me. At least on the surface. She is happy that I drop by instead of calling. I actually rarely drop by her place, opting to work on my games with a dream in mind. Since I have finished the game, I have time now.

I did not tell her that, however.

"To see my girlfriend. Gifting her some flowers and a box of chocolate too."

I tell her with a smile and produce a bouquet of roses and a box of chocolate. The rose I brought, but the chocolate, I have created. Well. More like I had made myself in a kitchen. I can cook thanks to my bigger sister being a chef. A struggling chef.

More on that for another time.

"Hmph. You will not able to bribe me that easily, William."

Jennifer responses. She tries to make the angriest face that she could, but due to her size and stature, it comes off as cute. Like super cute. I think that is the reason I like her in the first place.

"Oh? If you do not want it, I can take it back. Let me find someone else to give it to first though. Please excuse me."

I tell her and turn around to actually go and find someone else, leaving her utterly speechless. Even if it is a joke, I would do it for real just because she is behaving that way.

"Hah!? Are you serious!? Hey! Hey! Wait a second! Give it here, you idiot! How dare you give my stuff to another person. I will kill you!"

Jennifer calls out and rushes after to me. Ah. It is fun messing around with her, and I think it is probably nice to have some human contacts.

Too bad Jennifer does not let me stay the night, and I am not a horny teenager to press the matter.

And since I have free time now, I decide to work on the System for a bit more. Sure, I could have used the time to improve my programming and game development skills, there is no need to hurry.

Oh. I just notice that Desora is missing, so I must have packaged him with the game and submitted to the compeitition. Oh well.

I will pick him up tomorrow.

Not like this is the first time something like it had happened.
