Chapter 15: Exam day

The examination rooms were arranged according to academic performance, so when Xia Yao walked in, everybody was very friendly. All students there were from Class F and they greeted each other; they possibly were the only non-anxious kids in the whole school.
After getting up at 6 am to read and study one more time until it was time to go take the exam, Xia Yao felt confident and relaxed.

The first test was mathematics, which started at 8 am. Some students were still outside, either going to the bathroom or hanging around, and Xia Yao’s class was leisurely waiting.
Xia Yao was silently memorizing ancient poems and traditional Chinese in preparation for the Chinese exams in the afternoon. Mathematics was simpler; if one didn’t have the ability to think logically, they wouldn’t be able to answer, but Chinese was more subjective.

When the test was about to start, the teacher came in holding the sealed papers and yawned as he walked. This class was the best to monitor; the students there didn’t care about grades at all and didn’t even bother to cheat. They usually slept while other classes worked hard.
The back door suddenly opened and the teacher narrowed his eyes. Through his glasses, he looked at the newcomer wearing a baseball cap and found him both familiar and not.
There was a small commotion in the classroom. The girls noticed who had just come in and discreetly smoothed their heads and scented the perfume they had sprayed earlier. Rebellious teenage girls tended to like boys who fought instead of studying; especially when they were cold to everyone and Xu Shizhou perfectly embodied their fantasy.

Xu Shizhou had never taken an exam before, not even finals. He glanced at the classroom and found his seat in no time.
Xia Yao was the second to last and only the seat behind her was empty. It just so happened the boy had come to see her.

Within a few seconds, Xia Yao heard the sound of someone sitting behind her, and Xu Shizhou made a loud noise, a blatant display of his personality. Xia Yao had started to think he was a good person and she turned sideways to greet him.
“Good morning.”
As soon as she turned around, Xu Shizhou’s gaze naturally fell on her profile. The girl’s facial features were very bright, her skin was fair and her eyes seemed to shine directly in his heart. She was also righteous and her eyelashes fluttered like butterflies. Today, she was wearing a refreshing high ponytail and her exposed neck looked white and slender. Before Xu Shizhou could recover from his trance, Xia Yao had already turned back.

Xu Shizhou realized he had forgotten to answer her and he poked her in the back, his voice as lazy as usual: “Xia Yao, good luck with the exam.”
“Huh?” Xia Yao turned again slightly.
“Then I will sleep first. See you after the exam.” Xu Shizhou looked at her one more time.
“Aren’t you going to take the exam?” Xia Yao was a little confused. Had he just come to cheer for her?
The teenager who was about to sleep on the table was suddenly startled as if he had just thought of something.
— Xia Yao was at the bottom of every exam yet when she tutored him, she was really good at it.
— Perhaps she was just unlucky during exams!
— But if she liked learning so much, would she hate people who do poorly?
Xu Shizhou sat up straight and poked the girl’s back again.
“I forgot to bring a pen. Lend me one.”

After she gave him one, the examination started and the classroom became quiet. Students were sleeping or doodling on the papers, but no one chatted with each other and among them, one young girl was sitting upright and writing answers quickly.
[Please, show up in front of Class A before 10:16 and be sure to complete the plot of “The sweetheart of the three big bosses”. The host must wait for Ji Huai and invite him to lunch.]
Xia Yao’s expression didn’t change and the speed of her pen didn’t falter. She already knew of today’s plot.
Her character had liked Ji Huai a lot and as soon as the bell had rung, she had naturally gone to see him first to invite him to lunch. She had then seen him talk with the heroine and the two of them walk out of the classroom together with a smile. Heartbroken on the spot, she had inserted herself forcibly between them.

Xia Yao handed her papers in advance and walked out of the examination room briskly and happily, just like a general who had won a battle. However, she still had a scene to play.
Except for a few students who were still writing in the room, most kids from Class F had given up and also handed in their papers in advance. They were all hanging out outside and Xu Yinuan caught her with Xia Yao, wondering why she was so anxiously running away.

“Xia Yao, why are you leaving so fast? You look like you’re going to see your man!”
Always hitting the nail of the head! But for Xia Yao who had awakened her self-awareness and didn’t like Ji Huai as she had in the novel, she found an excuse quickly: “I didn’t go to the restrooms before the exam, I am in a hurry!”
“But this is not the direction of the bathroom…” Xu Yinuan grabbed her arm, “Could it be that you are going to Class A—?”
She raised her voice and Xia Yao felt a little uncomfortable and afraid of hearing the rest of the sentence.
“Could it be that you are going to Class A’s restrooms? Do you think you will grab the halo of good students there?” Xu Yinuan smiled.
Xia Yao was speechless but they had almost reached Class A at this time and she saw Ji Huai and the heroine together.

Xia Xi was following Ji Huai and her friends were around. One of them said: “This exam was so difficult! It’s even harder than hell mode! I definitely didn’t do well and I didn’t even finish the last question. Xia Xi, how did you do? Did you answer the last problem?”
Xia Xi nodded and softly answered: “I hadn’t finished reviewing this part, I almost didn’t answer.”
“Gosh, Xia Xi, you figured it out! I bet that you would, it seems that I won again this time, ahahah!” The girl jumped in joy.
Xia Xi smiled and her cheeks reddened a little: “It was actually not that difficult. If we had a little more time, you would have been able to answer it too. I answered √7.”
Xia Yao heard them from a distance and a smile flashed in her eyes. The answer was 0.
“What about you, Ji Huai?” Xia Xi was still following Ji Huai and finally summoned the courage to ask, “Did you do the last question? I don’t know if I answered it right.”
Her voice was soft and Xu Yinuan chuckled when she heard her: “Here we go, your sister is doing her white lotus act again.”
Xia Yao remained silent and waited for Xia Xi to be slapped in the face by Ji Huai.

Ji Huai was followed by a group of girls as soon as he left the classroom; they kept talking about the exams and what he disliked the most was sharing answers at the end.
He turned around and indifferently replied: “The answer is 0.”
But he was born with a pair of affectionate eyes. Even if he wasn’t smiling and was expressionless, as long as someone looked him in the eyes, they would feel they were the only ones in his heart. With such a glance, Xia Xi was already very satisfied.
Xia Xi made a pitiful face and looked sadly at Ji Huai: “Then I must be wrong, Ji Huai is definitely right. Can you tell me more? I want to know what I did wrong. It’s distressing, I calculated for so long and…”
“I have something else to do.” The boy faintly refused.
Xia Xi was taken aback. She had not expected he would disagree, but she did not feel discouraged either: “It’s okay, I’m not in a hurry. You can tell me later when you are free.”
“I may not be available in the future either.”
Since the library incident, Ji Huai really didn’t want to have any contact with this girl. He didn’t care about being misunderstood, he just didn’t like her.

Not far away, Xia Yao felt embarrassed for Xia Xi and Xi Yinuan had a bright smile on her face seeing her being humiliated in public.
“Ah? Why are you so busy?” Xia Xi wasn’t planning on giving up easily.
Ji Huai frowned. He felt that the refusal in his tone had been enough; was this girl emotionally lacking or deaf? But he had nothing important to do in reality.

Xia Xi waited for Ji Huai to answer but inadvertently glanced at Xia Yao. Why was she here? Was she looking for Ji Huai again? There was a complicated feeling in her heart and she asked her sister in a loud voice: “Xia Yao, why are you coming to Class A again?”
The word “again” was very subtle. Most of the students in school, under Xia Xi’s misleading, still believed Xia Yao was stalking Ji Huai and pestering him. After all, the two of them often went to school together.
Xia Yao thought of her task and answered in a confused voice: “What’s wrong, dear sister? Do I need to report to you when I am looking for someone to eat with?”
She had forcibly inserted herself between the male and female protagonists, achievement reached!

Hearing her voice, Ji Huai swept through all the chirping girls and saw Xia Yao and Xu Yinuan walking towards him.
“I made an appointment with Xia Yao for lunch. I’m in a hurry.” The teenager in white clothes walked to them.
Xia Xi was stunned but before she could break out of her trance, Ji Huai was already standing beside Xia Yao. Xu Yinuan glanced at the boy, surprise in her eyes. She pulled Xia Yao’s sleeve and asked: “No, why would you go eat in the restrooms?”
The corners’ of Xia Yao’s mouth twitched. She had not expected her mission would go so smoothly. She looked at Ji Huai too and said naturally: “What do you want to eat? My treat.”
Xu Yinuan knew Ji Huai lived in the Xia family’s home and it was normal for them to go home together after school. But right now, her woman’s sixth sense told her that the relationship between the two of them was not simple. There were a bunch of question marks in her heart but she tried her best to hide the gossip color on her face. She warned herself: be reserved, you can have lunch with the male god!

***

A young man dressed in black was standing on the stairs, his hands in his pockets. His eyes narrowed as the breeze of autumn blew in his hair.
“Master Xu?” The boy beside him called out quietly. He just didn’t understand. After the exam, Xu Shizhou had rushed out of the classroom yet had stopped once he reached the stairs. He really didn’t understand what was going on in the big boss’s head.
