Chapter 30: The Most Terrifying Creature

Poka poka.

“…” (Jade)

Poka poka.

“…” (Jade)

The ghost relentlessly punched me in the stomach.

I could fight back, but I didn’t want to.

After all,

The ghost transformed into my grandmother.

With her wavy white hair, bent waist, and wrinkled face.

She looks exactly like the old lady in my memories.

“S-so, that’s the creature that Jade finds the scariest?” (Dorami)

Dorami asked, her small face popping out from behind the tree.

I nod as the ghost continued to hit me.

“Looks like it. I didn’t think about it, but it’s probably accurate.” (Jade)

“But, she doesn’t look scary at all. Dorami’s grandmother is a hundred times scarier.” (Dorami)

“Well, my grandmother wasn’t really scary. She was very kind to me and secretly gave me sweets. Even when I decided to become an adventurer, my grandmother was the only one who supported me.” (Jade)

“If that’s the case, why are you afraid of her?” (Dorami)

“I snuck out of the house in the middle of the night one time because I felt like going on an adventure and I got lost… The usually mild-mannered old lady seriously scolded me for the first time.” (Jade)

After wandering in the forest for three days, I barely managed to get home. My mother and father only felt relief when I returned, but my grandmother scolded me harshly.

‘Don’t worry your family like this again.’

It was the first time I had seen her angry face, and it was carved into my memory.

Of course, I know that she’s actually really kind. Even so, if you ask me who I’m most afraid of right now, it’d definitely be my grandmother from that time.

Let’s put that aside for now.

“Aren’t you going to fight?” (Dorami)

“I can’t. Even though she’s a ghost, she still looks like my grandmother. Dorami, can you come over here for a sec?” (Jade)

“B-but, even Dorami can’t fight an old lady… Dorami Sword is also saying ‘that’s impossible…’” (Dorami)

“No, no, that’s not it. We just need to transform it into the creature Dorami is afraid of the most.” (Jade)

“I see,” said Dorami with a satisfied expression.

She doesn’t know if my grandmother would suddenly attack her, she approached a bit fearfully.

And then, my grandmother stopped hitting me.

She turned her wrinkled face towards Dorami and stared at her as if she was observing her—

My grandmother suddenly glowed brightly.

When the light disappeared, there stood a hairy creature in place of my grandmother.

It was a bear with wings—a Wing Bear.

“GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”

“GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!” (Dorami)

Dorami ran behind the tree as the Wing Bear chased after her. Looks like it’s dead set on targeting Dorami.

Of course, I won’t let it do that.

When I slammed my fist into the Wing Bear’s abdomen that was trying to pass me, it pierced all the way through. Black mist came out of its giant body.

It was ether.

“D-did you beat it?” (Dorami)

“Yeah. The ether was also properly released.” (Jade)

Ether is generated when a monster dies.

The Flower Crest grows by absorbing this, but mine has already reached its limit.

“Hmm… Oh, there it is.” (Jade)

I collected the magic stone from the Wing Bear’s body and put it in my pocket.

The only thing left to do is to bring it back to the guild. I’m looking forward to chatting with Garnet-san in her uniform.

Well, that’d be after I return to the capital after finishing my trip. It would be too sad if I’m not able to see Garnet-san for several weeks, so I’m planning to return for a bit in one week.

“Thanks. I was able to defeat it thanks to you.” (Jade)

“Dorami didn’t do anything…” (Dorami)

“That’s not true. I was able to beat the ghost because you were brave enough to get closer.” (Jade)

When I praised her, Dorami became all smiles.

“Dorami wants to tell everyone about her achievements as soon as possible!” (Dorami)

“I’m sure everyone’s looking forward to hearing your adventure story. Dorami is a very popular person in the capital, after all.” (Jade)

“Not that much…” (Dorami)

Dorami suddenly got embarrassed and became more humble.

I took Dorami with me and went back to the path.

By that time, it was already sunset and the road was getting darker.

While illuminating the path with the light mushroom’s magic stone, I asked about something that caught my attention earlier.

“What kind of people were your family?” (Jade)

“Don’t know. But, they must’ve been very dignified dragons like Dorami.” (Dorami)

Don’t know? Does that mean she doesn’t know what her family looks like?

“Didn’t you just say that “Dorami’s grandmother is a hundred times scarier” earlier?” (Jade)

“She’s not my real grandmother, she’s just the old lady in the house where Dorami lived in.

“Oooh. So you used to live in a house. What made you move into an abandoned mountain then?” (Jade)

“It’s because my grandma almost found me…” (Dorami)

“Almost found you? …Could you have been secretly living there?” (Jade)

With a nod, Dorami looked into the distance as if recalling those days.

“Dorami was wandering alone and ended up in some town. She was so hungry that she couldn’t take another step so she decided to ask the people inside the house for some food. It was her first time asking a human to share their food with her so she was a bit nervous…”

“And then, did you enter their house without permission?” (Jade)

“H-how did you know?!” (Dorami)

“If you were nearly found, that means they never found you.” (Jade)

“That’s right. Dorami was going to ask for food after saying hello properly. She knocked on the door but there was no answer, so she tried opening the door. There was a delicious scent. It was the scent wafting through the air—yes, there was food on the table!” (Dorami)

“So, did you eat it?” (Jade)

“Dorami properly said ‘itadakimasu (thank you for the meal)’ before the meal. O-of course, she also said ‘gochisosama (thank you for making it)’ after that! Though, she came to her senses after eating and almost cried. She nearly ate it all. Of course, they’d be angry…that’s what she thought.” (Dorami)

T/N: Another common knowledge thing, I translated these properly earlier but having them like this worked better in context.

“If you properly apologize, they’d forgive you.” (Jade)

“But Dorami didn’t apologize… The old lady came into the house and was so surprised that the food was gone that she stamped her feet and went upstairs.” (Dorami)

“So she couldn’t find you in the house?” (Jade)

Dorami found an attic. She only went out to eat food. She secretly put the ladder down, slowly climbed down, retrieved the food, then went back. She lived in there for about a year.” (Dorami)

“You did great not getting found out…” (Jade)

“Dorami was careful not to make any noise. She was also thanking them for the meal in her heart. Also, she only ate half the food. Dorami really wanted to eat it all, but she won against the temptation…” (Dorami)

If half of the food I prepared in advance disappeared, I definitely would’ve noticed…

“And then one day, my grandma called out to me and said ‘I know you’re in there.’ Dorami went into a panic and ran outside and flew away. Before she knew it, she was already in the abandoned mountain.” (Dorami)

“And you haven’t seen her since then?” (Jade)

“No… If she met Dorami, she would definitely get angry at her. But, Dorami still wants to meet her.” (Dorami)

“Even if she’s mad at you?” (Jade)

“Dorami did something that deserves scolding. And, she also wants to properly say ‘thank you’. And, and, she also wants to apologize.”

Dorami was saying that from the bottom of her heart.

If that’s the case, I want to let Dorami do what she wants to do. Otherwise, she’d end up living with the guilt.

“Where is that house?” (Jade)

“Dorami doesn’t know. But, the town was bright even at night.” (Dorami)

“A town that’s bright even at night… Could it have been a commercial city?” (Jade)

“Do you have any ideas?” (Dorami)

“I can think of a few but, the closest commercial city from here is in the Lingoc Kingdom. …Do you want to go?” (Jade)

“Yeah!” (Dorami)

“Alright then.” (Jade)

If it’s a commercial city with a lot of traffic (people), we might be able to get information about Onyx-san. And, we might be able to find souvenirs that Garnet-san would like.

And then, we just walked through the forest while chatting.

Translator’s Corner:

This is chapter 17 in the translated manga, so it’s 2 chapters away from the latest. Looks like it’s at a 1:1 ratio now because the next chapter looks like it’s the entirety of chapter 18. I’d have to check that though.
