Chapter 35: Momochi

T/N: Momo means peach, the chi at the end is just a suffix like -kun, -san, but way less formal and I’m not even sure if it’s a real honorific. Gyarus in anime use it a lot.

On the evening of that day.

We returned to the capital for the first time in 10 days.

Dorami took a deep breath as she exited the train platform.

“What a nostalgic smell…” (Dorami)

“It’s the smell of the bakery over there.” (Jade)

“When Dorami smells this, it really feels like we’ve come home.” (Dorami)

“We always smell it when we go on quests, after all.” (Jade)

“That barbershop’s signboard, the bronze statue of an old man, and the flag of that dye shop are all the same as when we left…” (Dorami)

She’s acting like she returned to her hometown for the first time in decades.

Normally, things won’t actually change in just 10 days but… Dorami is still young.

She might have a different sense of time than me who thinks that 10 days is just too short.

“OOOOH! Dorami has returned, capital!” (Dorami)

Well, I still feel like she’s overreacting.

Does this mean that she’s grown attached to the capital?

“Well then, how about we go to the guild first?” (Jade)

“Agreed! The kids there are also waiting for Dorami’s adventure stories!” (Dorami)

I also want to see Garnet-san as soon as possible so we headed straight to the guild without taking any detours. I made Dorami wait in front of the entrance and entered by myself.

Then, a pair of adventures rushed over.

Are they siblings? Their faces look alike.

“Jade-san, thank you for your hard work on the quests!” (Adventurer 1)

For me, quests are just a way to talk to Garnet-san but if I’m also helping other people in the process, I’m glad.

I was a bit nervous as I headed to the 18th counter but there was still an unchanging beauty over there.

Ah, Garnet-san. She looks beautiful today too…

“Hello, it’s Jade! I’ve completed my quest!” (Jade)

“Jade-sama, please wait a moment.” (Garnet)

She’s talking in the same matter-of-fact manner as usual, but her voice sounds a bit brighter…

“Dorami didn’t cry! She bravely stood in front of the ghost and witnessed it change!” (Dorami)

“A giant hairy monster!” (Dorami)

“Dorami looked up at the giant monster and ran away!” (Dorami)

“That Dorami-chan did?!”

“Dorami planned to run away. That’s right—Dorami pulled the monster’s attention by retreating, making it let its guard down! And then, with the monster full of gaps—BAM! Jade’s fist made it explode! The ghost scattered into a million pieces!” (Dorami)

Dorami looked very happy to be praised by the children.

Looks like her story is only about the beginning of our adventure but she’s reached a good stopping point in the story, so it’s probably alright to call her now.

“Want to go home now?” (Jade)

“Yeah~!” (Dorami)

“Bye-bye, Dorami-chan! Jade-sama!”

“Let’s talk again soon~!”

“Look forward to it~!” (Dorami)

I waved to the children and left with Dorami.

“Did you talk to Garnet already?” (Dorami)

“Just about work. Let’s go to Garnet-san’s house later.” (Jade)

That we weren’t able to obtain any information about Onyx-san.

On the way home, Dorami worked hard to practice the flute. Thanks to that, she was able to play well, though she didn’t know any songs.

Still, she had her own fun and even made her own theme song.

If I had a background in music, I could teach her but, right now I’m only a little better than Dorami.

Dorami was in a good mood, probably imagining her Grandma complimenting her and praising her.

She hummed until we got home.

Dorami ran through the halls while opening the door to each room, saying “This room still has Dorami’s smell!”

I went to the bedroom first to organize my backpack.

I put my used, bagged clothes on the floor so that the smell wouldn’t affect everything else and brought out the souvenirs on the bed.

Watering cans, mufflers, combs, bath salts, snow globes with flowers, bottled dried fruits, and so on.

I wanted to buy a few more things but if I bought too many, I might not have a place to put them so I held back.

I hope Garnet-san will like it…

And then, bang. The door opened and Dorami rushed inside.

“The nostalgic bedroom~! …Are you organizing your backpack?” (Dorami)

“Yeah. You should do it too.” (Jade)

Dorami put down her backpack. I bought one for her too because mine would be filled with souvenirs.

She counted the peaches as she took them out.

After taking out all of the peaches, she placed a small box on the floor.

When she opened the box, there was a cold breeze.

It was a peach seed.

“It’s freezing cold!” (Dorami)

According to the information we got from the inn, the peach seeds won’t germinate until they overwinter.

Because of that, I bought some Ice Turtle magic stones and let them experience an artificial winter by cooling them.

Dorami showed the snail watering can to the cooled seed.

“Dorami is gonna give you water with this~! And, there’s also this—tadah! It’s a flower pot~! This is going to be your house~!” (Dorami)

It was an acorn-shaped flowerpot that could also be used as an interior decoration.

She put her ear close to the seed and began muttering, “Hmmm… I see.” It looks like she’s talking with the seed…

“What did it say?” (Jade)

“Momochi is saying that it’s happy!” (Dorami)

“Momochi?” (Jade)

“That’s this child’s name! The shopkeeper told me that if Dorami talks to it, it will grow taller! That’s why she was thinking of a bunch of names during the entire train ride home.” (Dorami)

While saying that, Dorami lovingly caressed Momochi.

I planned to leave it with Garnet-san while we go on an adventure, but she might want to take Momochi on the trip too.

I took out a bag of soil from the bottom of my backpack.

It was the soil recommended by the shop where we bought the flowerpot.

We moved outside and filled the flower pot with soil.

Then, Dorami poked a small hole in the soil with her finger and gently put Momochi inside.

“Dorami won’t be able to meet Momochi for a while…” (Dorami)

“You’ll be reunited soon enough. Be sure to raise it with love so that it grows up safely.” (Jade)

Dorami immediately watered Momochi with the watering can.

Then, we carried the flowerpot from the bedroom to the sunny window.

There is some vacant land behind my house.

It was purposely left vacant so it can become a playground for children in the future.

We’ll put the peach there and then make a flower bed. It’ll be a heart-shaped flower bed for a date with Garnet-san.

Together with their Dorami onee-chan, the children would be eating delicious peaches. It’d be nice if I could have a flower bed date with Garnet-san while looking at such a happy sight.

The frilly clothes are Garnet-san’s hand-me-downs. Hurting this is the same as hurting Garnet-san.

When I got out of the bedroom and opened the front door, Garnet-san was standing there.

“It was fun! Dorami’s also looking forward to the next one~!”

“Yes, we went to the guild in a commercial city, but there were no records of Onyx-san’s visits… Because of that, I decided to go to the capital of the Lingoc Kingdom next!” (Jade)
