Chapter 47: Memories of a Lifetime

The next morning.

I woke up to an unfamiliar ceiling.

There were drawings on the walls and sunlight shining through the small windows. I could hear birds chirping from somewhere while my body was clinging to something vibrating.

When I opened the futon, I saw Dorami clinging to me.

T/N: Futon. They’ve slept in beds until now so that’s a first for this series.

“…You’re already awake?”

“…It’s too cold.” (Dorami)

“That’s because you slept in thin clothes. You bought some cute pajamas, so you should wear them properly.” (Jade)

“But, it was warm yesterday…” (Dorami)

It certainly was warm during the day yesterday and she was also playing with Marin-chan until she went to bed.

Her body might’ve warmed up so she let her guard down.

“It’s cold, so go and change.” (Jade)

“Dorami can’t get out of bed because it’s so cold… Jade, it’s Dorami’s once-in-a-lifetime request, please do it…” (Dorami)

“You don’t have to use such a wish for something like this…” (Jade)

I got out of bed to search for Dorami’s backpack.

She must’ve flipped it over when she took something out. Her backpack was a mess so I had trouble finding her pajamas.

“Do you want the long-sleeved pajamas or the jacket?”

“…Is it morning already?” (Dorami)

“Yeah, it is.” (Jade)

“Then, it’s time to go and play with Marin.” (Dorami)

“Go change your clothes first.” (Jade)

I handed over her favorite dress and the jacket we bought the other day.

Then, Dorami crawled back into bed and started changing her clothes.

While I was arranging the backpack’s contents, I took a side glance at the moving bedsheets. There, Dorami stood up wearing her casual clothes.

“Dorami changed her clothes!” (Dorami)

“It suits you.” (Jade)

“Thank you~! That also suits you, Jade!” (Dorami)

Dorami was filled with energy, probably because the jacket had warmed her up.

She stood in front of the full-length mirror and struck a pose with a gallant expression.

Garnet-san called out to us from the door.

When I replied and told her that I was awake, Garnet-san entered the room.

I also had the option of sleeping in Garnet-san’s old bedroom (currently Marin-chan’s bedroom), but I ended up choosing this one.

I left the room with Dorami who looked like she was in a good mood.

When we went down the stairs, Marin-chan was already arranging plates on the table.

Marin-chan looked a bit proud.

Though after we praised her, she scratched her cheek embarrassedly.

“Thank you. Jade-kun, can you prepare the bread?” (Garnet)

“I’ll prepare the strawberry jam!” (Marin)

“Dorami will prepare the spoons!” (Dorami)

Thanks to everyone working together, the preparations were over in no time.

Today’s breakfast is mushroom soup and bread. Dorami’s gaze was glued to the bottle of strawberry jam.

We paid our respects and quickly ate.

After cleaning up, we left the house.

The sky was clear and the breeze was cool.

Garnet-san guided us along the path.

Each house had a beautiful flower bed with unique flowers. I felt like I was having a picnic even though I was just walking along a residential street.

As I was enjoying the scenery while greeting the townspeople that we passed by, I saw an old-fashioned brick mansion standing there.

“There are doodles on the wall…” (Dorami)

“Yeah, but they look really good.” (Jade)

“This is Kamiesi’s mansion.” (Garnet)

T/N: カミエーシ, I just translated it literally cause I can’t find any other way, though I did change the shi to si cause it sounds better. Jade is Jei-do, Garnet is Ganetto so they’re easy but this one… yeah.

“By Kamiesi you mean that Kamiesi?” (Jade)

“Do you know him?” (Dorami)

“He’s a famous painter, though he was from 300 years ago.” (Jade)

“No wonder Dorami thought that the doodles look really good…” (Dorami)

Dorami suddenly had a knowing look.

She took out her opera glasses and began muttering, “Fumu. This part here looks especially good… You can reall tell if you look at it from this angle.”

“Landscapes, monsters, and even cooking… There are all kinds of illustrations.” (Jade)

“Kamiesi traveled around the world and made paintings of the things that left an impression on him. When my father saw these paintings, he wanted to see the world with his own eyes and decided to become an adventurer.” (Garnet)

We looked at the paintings while holding hands. After looking at it for a while, we resumed our walk.

We entered a small alley from a residential street and soon arrived at the main street.

The main street was lively.

Dorami and Marin-chan were running around, excited by the lively atmosphere.

When I chased after them while holding hands with Garnet-san, we ended up in front of a toy store. The two of them had their faces pressed against the window and seemed excited.

We entered the toy store and went to the doll section. After picking up my doll, we decided to take a look around the store.

Dorami and Marin-chan’s eyes sparkled while Garnet-san looked nostalgic.

“Have you ever been to a toy store with Onyx-san?” (Jade)

“He used to buy me crayons. I liked to draw.” (Garnet)

“There WERE a lot of drawings in the room.” (Jade)

“Yes. When I was drawing a portrait of my father, he suddenly made a funny face. I got angry and told him to be serious and he just told me to that he was sorry. Soon after that, he made another weird face.” (Garnet)

I’m sure she just wanted to make Garnet-san laugh.

But because her sulking face was so cute, he couldn’t help but make funny faces over and over.

“When I drew a portrait, my father showed it to the people around town. I was really embarrassed back then.” (Garnet)

“I’m sure he just wanted to show off. His cute daughter drew a nice portrait.” (Jade)

Onyx-san has been missing for a long time.

No matter how much he loves traveling, it’s strange that he hasn’t come back once in 12 years.

She then told me that she’d draw a portrait of me as thanks.

And behind her is Marin-chan holding a pack of 12-color crayons.

Marin-chan happily swapped her crayons.

After paying the bill, we left the toy store.

As we headed towards the square, Dorami suddenly stopped.

“Jade, Dorami has a once-in-a-lifetime request…” (Dorami)

Dorami asked timidly.

Probably because it’s already the third time today, she acted a bit awkwardly.

“What is it?” (Jade)

“Dorami wants to eat that!” (Dorami)

She pointed to an ice cream shop.

“It’s fine but, aren’t you feeling cold?” (Jade)

“She walked a lot so she’s already warm!” (Dorami)

Dorami and Marin-chan spread out their drawing tools on the table.

“Then, let’s draw portraits and exchange them! Are you two going to draw too?” (Dorami)

It definitely does seem like it.

It’s a pretty memorable trip so I wanted to leave a record of it somehow anyway. Every time I’ll look at the portrait, I’ll be able to remember the fun trip I had today.

The problem is I’m not very good at drawing…

“I want you to draw me too. I’ll also draw you, Jade-kun.” (Garnet)

After putting away the tea set, we all started working on the portraits.

I’ve been meeting Garnet-san’s gaze over and over again and each time we do, her face softens.

Onyx-san might not have wanted to make a strange face but was just overwhelmed by his daughter’s cuteness.

Dorami was satisfied by her dignified portrait.

Garnet-san showed her portrait of me.

I already knew from just a glance that she wasn’t actually good at drawing.

But… that’s exactly why I’m so happy.

She did her best to draw me!

“You can see the force in the lines and it feels really lively!” (Dorami)

“Jade-kun’s strength is well-expressed!” (Marin)

“It’s the best! I want to use it as a decoration in my bedroom! I’m going to buy a frame for it right away!” (Jade)

After putting away the crayons, we went out to buy some picture frames.

We also stopped by a clothing store, af ruit shop, and the store where Sandra-san works on the way. We enjoyed the walk and it was already evening by the time we got home.

After watering Momochi and the flower bed, Sandra-san arrived. We cooked dinner and had a cookie party—enjoying the chatter until late at night.

It was super fun and time went by pretty fast—

The next morning.

We were at the train station.

Garnet-san’s vacation ends today. If we miss the train, she won’t be able to get to work tomorrow.

“You didn’t have to come all the way here to see us off.” (Jade)

“My my, you don’t have to worry about it. Though it was short, it was a very fun time.” (Sandra)

“Dorami had fun too!” (Dorami)

“I also had a lot of fun too! Come and visit again!” (Marin)

“Dorami will definitely come! …Right?” (Dorami)

When I nodded, Dorami burst into a big smile.

I was a bit nervous at first but in the end, the house was really comfortable.

While I got determined, the station staff called out to us and told us,”It’s time to depart,” so we boarded to the train.

We sat down in the box seat and Dorami opened the window. She leaned out as the train slowly began to move.

“Come and visit us again~” (Sandra)

“We’ll definitely visit again~!” (Dorami)

And so, we left Garnet-san’s hometown with Marin-chan and Sandra-san waving us off.

Translator’s Corner:

For Kamiesi’s name, there’s also the possibility of it being ‘氏’ (shi). It came to me while I was translating the latter half of the chapter. Their name would then be Kamie (which is a legit JP name) and the -shi at the end would just mean Mr/Mrs/etc. The chance is small though because it’s written in katakana. It’s more likely that they’re just named Kamiesi/Kamieshi as even -kun is written in hiragana here. -san is in hiragana by default but the author writes -sama and -dono with kanji.

Also, the fact that loaned words (from other languages) are almost always written in katakana, like the names of everyone in the series so far. Actually, now that I think about it, this last part makes the most sense because there isn’t a single Japanese name in here.
