Chapter 48: To Become a Real Hero Someday

We returned to the capital after a fun visit to Garnet-san’s hometown.

But, it happened the day after that.

By the time I woke up, Dorami was already up.

She had her face nearly pressed to the window as she gazed at the scenery outside.

Has she been like that this whole time? The windows are already fogged up because of her breath.

“…What are you looking at?” (Jade)

“N-nothing.” (Dorami)

“It doesn’t feel like it’s nothing, though…” (Jade)

I was curious so I also looked out the window.

From the bedroom window, I could see Garnet-san’s house.

Maybe it’s because there’s a cute woman living there, even the house feels cute.

Though, that’s just my personal opinion. I don’t think Dorami has anything she’d be interested in other than…

“Do you want to draw on the walls of her house?” (Jade)

We enjoyed drawing together the other day.

Maybe she remembered those fun memories and made her want to draw on the wall.

But, Dorami shook her head.

“If we do that, Garnet will get angry and scold us. …’Get angry’? (Dorami)

“I wonder… Garnet-san is kind so she probably won’t get angry but… it’s probably best not to do it. If you want to draw, use some drawing paper. Do you still have some?” (Jade)

“Dorami still has a lot. She’ll draw lots of monsters and Dorami then show them to the children!” (Dorami)

“Yeah. We’ll be in the capital for a while so you can draw as much as you want.” (Jade)

To find Onyx-san, I want to embark on my next journey as soon as possible.

But, we just got home yesterday.

Dorami must be tired and I also want to spend some time with Garnet-san.

That’s why I was planning to take it easy for about a week, but—

“If Dorami only draws all day, her body is going to get dull.” (Dorami)

Dorami seemed to want to go out.

I guess it IS boring to be staying home all the time.

“Since the weather’s nice, should we go shopping?”

“Agreed!” (Dorami)

“Is there anywhere you want to go?” (Jade)

“The weapon shop!” (Dorami)

“The weapon shop?” (Jade)

“After that, the armor shop!” (Dorami)

I expected her to say she wanted to go to the candy store or a bakery.

But, it’s not really that surprising. When we went on a quest with Marin-chan the other day, she was really enjoying herself.

When she saw the children who made their debut as adventurers too, she felt envious…

“Dorami, do you want to be an adventurer?” (Jade)

“Eh?! H-how do you know that Dorami wants to be an adventurer?!” (Dorami)

I intended to just probe a bit, but I got a clear answer.

“I can see it written on your face.” (Jade)

“There are letters on Dorami’s face?!” (Dorami)

Dorami ran to the mirror to check herself.

That’s not what I meant…

“If you want to become an adventurer, should we go ask the King?” (Jade)

You don’t normally need the King’s permission to become an adventurer, but Dorami is a white dragon.

The King might not like it if she debuts as an adventurer without permission.

“…It’s impossible.” (Dorami)

I thought she’d be happy, but she just looked depressed.

“Why? Don’t you want to become an adventurer?” (Jade)

“Dorami wants to! She really does but… Dorami is a dragon so the Flower Crest won’t appear…” (Dorami)

Aah, so that’s why she’s depressed.

It’s true that you associate adventurers with Flower Crests. You wouldn’t really be satisfied if you don’t have it.

If that’s the case, I have to clear up her misunderstanding.

“Dragons can also have Flower Crests.” (Jade)

“Eh, even though they’re dragons?!” (Dorami)

“Yeah. I don’t really want to call Dorami a monster too but… There’s a powerful monster called the ‘Kamon-Tsuki’.” (Jade)

T/N: Kamon-Tsuki means “attaches a Flower Crest”. I can leave it as a temporary handle until I find a good translation or if there’s no better one, I’ll just keep it at that. It’s just a title anyway.

It’s the identity of the crystal that bestows Flower Crests to adventurers. It’s the magic stone of a Devil Tree.

On top of that, another way to obtain the Flower Crest is by eating the fruit of the Devil Tree. After eating the tree, a Flower Crest will appear and you’ll also be able to gain special powers.

“Should Dorami eat the fruit?” (Dorami)

“No, you can’t eat the fruit no matter what.” (Jade)

The Devil Tree will give you special powers and in exchange, it’ll slowly take over your mind and body.

Eventually, you’ll become a Devil Tree yourself, creating more potential Devil Trees.

“That’s too scary… Dorami has to make sure she doesn’t eat any on accident…” (Dorami)

“Yep. Though, the Devil Trees are almost completely hunted down, so you don’t have to worry about it.” (Jade)

After all, the monster that gives the Flower Crest is too strong.

The adventurers spent a long time trying to subjugate it so that it won’t get stronger.

“Of course, if you just get the crest from the magic stone, there aren’t any demerits.”

Flower Crests wouldn’t be so wildly used otherwise.

Once Dorami heard my story, her eyes sparkled.

“Yay! Dorami can also become an adventurer!” (Dorami)

“Did you want to be one that badly?” (Jade)

“Anyone who looks at Marin would want to become one!” (Dorami)

“True, Marin-chan really seemed to enjoy taking quests.” (Jade)

“Uoooo! Dorami will become an adventurer too! She’ll help people just like Jade and become a real hero someday!” (Dorami)

Dorami then excitedly continued, “Dorami’s going to entertain everyone with adventure stories.”

It’s like looking at the past me.

“Can Dorami really become an adventurer?!” (Dorami)

“Of course.” (Jade)

Looks like my future journeys are fraught with danger.

Of course, I’ll protect her no matter what happens but I still want her to learn some self-defense.

She can overcome most dangers just by becoming a dragon but she can’t just take her dragon form with people around.

And, above all, you can’t take away a child’s dream of becoming an adventurer.

I know how it feels, having had my parents opposed to my decision.

“Should we go and get permission right away?” (Jade)

“In order to make a good impression, Dorami should dress like a princess~!” (Dorami)

After changing into Garnet-san’s hand-me-downs, we headed to the royal castle.
