Chapter 49: A New Adventurer

Afternoon of that same day.

“Uooooo! We did iiiiiiiit!” (Dorami)

As soon as we got home, Dorami shouted loudly.

“The King granted us permission!” She yelled.

Haa~ I’m glad that her adventurer debut has been approved. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

After all, Dorami was in high spirits all the way until we got to the castle.

In the face of the excited Dorami, failure is unforgivable. Though it was dependent on my willingness to take responsibility, it also helped that Dorami told the King all about how she had been a good girl and how she had longed to become an adventurer.

As a result, the King told her “Since you’ve been a good girl, you can become an adventurer (summarized version).”

Since then, Dorami has been all restless. She wants to celebrate immediately but the King would get mad if she frolics in the castle, and she’ll just be a nuisance to the people in the city if she’s too loud.

For that reason, she waited until we got home before running around the room—jumping and rolling around.

“Well then, all that’s left is preparations.” (Jade)

“Are we going to the weapon shop?!” (Dorami)

“Before that—” (Jade)

“Are we going to the armor shop?!” (Dorami)

“Before that—” (Jade)

“Dorami’s going to get a Flower Crest?!” (Dorami)

“Nope, it’s a little different.” (Jade)

“Th-then, what are we going to do?” (Dorami)

“We have to get you through the guild’s procedures to become a real adventurer.” (Jade)

“Is there something like an interview…?” (Dorami)

“Not at all. You just need to fill out a form with your name, age, and birthplace.” (Jade)

Once I explained what she needed, Dorami looked a bit embarrassed.

I know what she’s feeling, after all—

“Dorami doesn’t know her age or her hometown…” (Dorami)

“Your name too.” (Jade)

“Dorami’s name is Dorami! Jade was the one who gave her this cool name!” (Dorami)

“I don’t think there’s a problem with just ‘Dorami’ but we should prepare something as your last name, just in case. Is that fine?” (Jade)

Dorami folded her arms and fell silent.

Then, as if she came up with a brilliant idea,

“Then, she’ll have the same last name as Jade!” (Dorami)

“Mine?” (Jade)

“That name is the most likely one to become a hero! …Is it no good?” (Dorami)

“It’s fine. Finks isn’t an uncommon last name. I’ve had lots of people come up to me and introduce themselves as my relatives.”

Dorami then muttered, “Dorami Finks…” and grinned.

Well then.

“About your birthday, should we just say that you turned 12 years old today?”

“That’s fine! Marin also took her quest on the same day she turned 12! Dorami’ll be the same as Marin!” (Dorami)

“I did the same thing.” (Jade)

“Wow! So we’re the same~!” (Dorami)

“Well then, happy birthday!” (Jade)

“Thank you~!” (Dorami)

“Next, we have your birthplace… Do you have any memories of the past?” (Jade)

“Dorami doesn’t remember very much. She just remembers it being very cold.” (Dorami)

“Have you been traveling alone since way back then?” (Jade)

“Dorami traveled with someone.” (Dorami)

“Someone?” (Jade)

“Umu. Dorami also learned the human language from that person. She took good care of Dorami. She also transformed between a human and a dragon…Now that Dorami thinks about it, that person might be her mother.” (Dorami)

“She definitely sounds like it, so most likely.” (Jade)

“But, she told Dorami that she wasn’t her mother.” (Dorami)

“Really?” (Jade)

“Umu. She suddenly told Dorami “From now on, you need to should live alone,” and then brought Dorami to a warm place before being warned, “You shouldn’t turn into a dragon.”

So she began traveling alone after that and ended up in the attic of her grandmother’s house.

“So, what should we do about Dorami’s birthplace?” (Dorami)

“Since you only know that it’s a cold place, it’s gonna be tough… Do you want to just have it be the same as where I was from?” (Jade)

“That’s good enough!” (Dorami)

So, Dorami Finks (12 years old) from Cassado Village, is finally becoming an adventurer.

All that’s left is—

“You need to practice writing letters.” (Jade)

“She’ll practice!” (Dorami)

Dorami spread her crayons and drawing paper on the table.

Once I showed her what she needed to remember, she tried her best to imitate it.

That evening.

I came to the guild with a prepped Dorami.

Then, the children gathered around.

“It’s Dorami-chan!”

“What kind of adventure story are you going to tell us today?!”

Dorami then put on a dignified face and spoke to the children whose eyes were sparkling with excitement.

“The adventure story will have to wait for later. Dorami is here for something else today.” (Dorami)

“Something else?”

“It’s Dorami’s debut as an adventurer!” (Dorami)

The children made a fuss.

“Amazing! Dorami-chan is going to become an adventurer!”

“She’s going all out now!”

“I’m sure you’ll become a great adventurer~”

“You can look forward to Dorami’s adventurer debut!” (Dorami)

We entered the guild as the children cheered us on.

At that moment, Dorami’s face stiffened.

As the moment approached, she suddenly got nervous.

“It’s fine, you’ll be able to debut properly.” (Jade)

“B-but, Dorami might suddenly make a spelling mistake…” (Dorami)

“You’ve practiced lots, you’ll be able to write it well. If you make a mistake, you can just write it again.” (Jade)

“D-Dorami doesn’t want to make any mistakes, if possible. She wants to make a really cool debut…” (Dorami)

“So, do you want to practice at home today?” (Jade)

“Dorami already told the children, so she can’t back down.” (Dorami)

It’s true that telling them that she’s going home because she’s going to practice her handwriting wouldn’t really look good.

Unable to settle down, she ended up practicing on the spot.

She drew with her finger on her little palm until the moment came.

“O-okay, let’s go.” (Dorami)

“Sure.” (Jade)

“…If possible, please follow Dorami as close as you can.” (Dorami)

“Alright.” (Jade)

Dorami seemed relieved when she looked back to see that I was following her.

With a straight face, she headed to the counter.

There, the receptionist smiled.

“Hello, what is it?”

“Dorami wants to register as an adventurer!” (Dorami)

“The registration fee is 10,000 Gol, do you have it?”

“Y-yeah.” (Dorami)

Dorami handed over the 10,000 Gol that I gave to her in advance to the receptionist.

When the receptionist checked the money, she handed Dorami a piece of paper.

“Well then, can you write the necessary information over here?”

“Yeah!” (Dorami)

Dorami nodded with a tense face and filled in the form with trembling hands.

Name: Dorami Finks

Age: 12 Years Old

Birthplace: Cassado Village

Flower Crest:

Her hand stopped at the Flower Crest column and looked at the receptionist with an excited look.

The receptionist then responded by taking out a crystal ball.

“Then, can you touch this with your dominant hand?”

“Okay!” (Dorami)

Dorami lightly touched the crystal ball.

Then, a pattern appeared on the back of her hand.

It was a pattern resembling a flower bud—a Flower Crest.

“T-this is the Flower Crest..! What is it? It’s different from Jade’s…” (Dorami)

“Did you want the Reinforcement System?” (Jade)

“If it’s up to Dorami, either the Reinforcement or the Attack System is good.” (Dorami)

“Then, congratulations! You’ve gotten an Attack System!”

The Attack System is what those adventurers with flashy attacks have.

Probably because Dorami had heard stories about it beforehand, she jumped with joy.

“Yay! Dorami got the Attack System!” (Dorami)

“Congratulations, Dorami!” (Jade)

“Thank you~!” (Dorami)

“Congratulations, little girl!”

“Thank you~!” (Dorami)

Dorami was happy to receive applause from the adventurers.

Well then, all that’s left is to accept a quest but… it’s already evening.

The first quest will have to wait for tomorrow so we’ll go home for today.

When we left the guild, the children rushed over.

Dorami then proudly showed off her Flower Crest.

“Tadah! Dorami has become an Attacker!” (Dorami)

“So cool~!”

“It really suits you, Dorami-chan!”

“I-it’s not that big of a deal…” (Dorami)

After being praised by the children for her Flower Crest, Dorami walked home happily.

When we got home, we wet our throats before Dorami led me outside.

“Dorami wants to use magic right away!” (Dorami)

“Okay, let’s go to the back.” (Jade)

Even though she’s just a bud-class, it’ll still be dangerous if she hits someone.

When we got to the back of the house—which would eventually turn into a flower bed—and confirmed that nobody else was there…

Dorami stuck out her right hand.

“Uooooooo! Magiiiiiiiiiiiic! …How do you use it?” (Dorami)

“You just have to get an image in your mind The stronger the Flower Crest, the closer it’ll be to your imagination.” (Jade)

“Oh, so an image…” (Dorami)

“Also, you seem to be more attuned to water and wind.” (Jade)

“How can you tell?” (Dorami)

“It’s about the color. There are four types of magic in the Attack System: fire, light, water, and wind.” (Jade)

Fire is red, light is yellow, water is blue, and wind is green.

Dorami’s Flower Crest is a mix of blue and green, hence her system is specialized in those.

“If you do it right, you can even fuse cold wind and cold water to use ice magic.” (Jade)

“A-amazing…!” (Dorami)

“Of course, in order to use such a complicated image, you have to strengthen your Flower Crest first.” (Jade)

“Someday, Dorami will show you she can do it…!” (Dorami)

Enthusiastic, Dorami held out her right hand—

“—! S-something came out!” (Dorami)

Water trickled out of her hand.

“Congratulations! Your first attempt at using magic was a success!” (Jade)

“Thank you! Next is this!” (Dorami)

I felt a cool breeze.

“Congratulations! You managed to succeed twice in a row!” (Jade)

“Thank you! And, just like this…” (Dorami)

Suddenly, Dorami stopped.

Then, she sighed in worry.

“…Can a slime be defeated with this?” (Dorami)

“Well, that might be a bit difficult with just bud-class magic.” (Jade)

“As expected… Dorami doesn’t have the image that she can defeat it with something like this…” (Dorami)

Dorami looked a bit depressed, but she got over it quickly.

“But, Dorami’s still happy she managed to debut as an adventurer! As thanks, she’s going to help you!” (Dorami)

“Alright, thanks.” (Jade)

“There’s no need to hold back! Now, now, let’s go back inside!”

I entered the house while being pushed from behind.

She continued to push me until we ended up in front of the bathroom.

“You want to take a bath?” (Jade)

“Yeah! Dorami will wash Jade’s back!” (Dorami)

“It’d be nicer to just relax instead, though.” (Jade)

“You’ll be able to relax with Dorami’s relaxation technique!” (Dorami)

It’s the first time I’ve heard of it but if she really wants to do it, there’s no reason to stop her.

We took off our clothes in the dressing room before heading to the bathroom.

She then began rubbing my back.

“Does anything feel itchy?” (Dorami)

“There isn’t anything itchy.” (Jade)

“Does anything hurt?” (Dorami)

“Nothing hurts.” (Jade)

“Then, it’s time for the bubbles~ Ei!” (Dorami)

T/N: I can’t tell if it’s a reference to something. Maybe a song?

I felt a sprinkle of water.

Did she really invite me to the bath just because she wanted to use her magic?

“Huh? The water stopped.” (Dorami)

“You used magic earlier. You won’t be able to use any more without taking a break.” (Jade)

“Then, let’s soak in the bathtub for a while! Then, Dorami will use magic to dry Jade’s hair!” (Dorami)

If her magic ends up disappearing halfway, it’ll end up half-dried, though.

Though, I’m happy for the sentiment so I’ll at least say my thanks.

Dorami let out a sigh while soaking in the bathtub.

“Taking a bath really removes all the fatigue…” (Dorami)

“Right…” (Jade)

“…By the way, is there anything you want to ask of Dorami?” (Dorami)

“There’s nothing but… you’ve been desperately trying to help me since earlier.” (Jade)

Twitch, I feel like I heard something like that.

Dorami’s eyes then began to swim around.

“I-it’s nothing! It’s because Dorami’s always indebted to Jade!” (Dorami)

“…So you don’t have a favor you want to ask me?” (Jade)

“H-h-how did you know?!” (Dorami)

“I can tell because it’s written on your face.” (Jade)

Dorami then proceeded to wash her face.

Again, that’s not what I meant…

Anyway, I saw through Dorami’s real intentions.

“So, what do you want me to do?” (Jade)

“…Dorami will do her best to help you so please buy her a cool weapon.” (Dorami)

“Alright.” (Jade)

“Eh?! Even though you just gave Dorami 10,000 Gol, you’ll even buy her a weapon?!” (Dorami)

“Of course, I will. Weapons and armor are indispensable for adventurers.” (Jade)

“You’re even going to buy armor?! B-by the way, what’s the budget…?” (Dorami)

“You don’t have to worry about it. You’re going to be fighting monsters so you need to equip yourself properly.” (Jade)

“Uooooooooo! Alright! Thank youuuuu!” (Dorami)

Dorami stood up and danced happily.

Translator’s Corner:

So, I realized this like a week or something ago but never really thought about it but… Context first, the author doesn’t actually write “Dorami is—” for every sentence, I’m the one who writes that. You can omit personal pronouns in Japanese since it’s mostly a given. But, since Dorami speaks in the third person, I can’t just convert it to “I, my, etc”. and just stating “She, her” each time would sound incoherent (we wouldn’t be able to tell who she’s referring to unless she’s the sole girl) so I write her name myself.

If I didn’t, most of her sentences would be “Her name is Dorami!”, “She ran away when she saw the Winged Bear!”. It would just end up really confusing. I really said a lot but all I wanted to say is using her name and stuff literally became like a 2nd nature to me, I just unconsciously change all her words now lol.
