Chapter 50: Blacksmith’s Apprentice

The next day.

We went shopping in the morning.

First, we visited the armor shop.

“Do you see anything you like?” (Jade)

“A shield that matches with Marin’s would be good!” (Dorami)

“A mithril shield, huh? It’d be nice if we find one…” (Jade)

When I looked around the store, I saw it displayed in the most conspicuous spot.

And the price says “market price”.

“How much is this?” (Dorami)

“I don’t know, I’ll have to check with the store’s staff…” (Jade)

“Dorami hopes that the price hasn’t changed…” (Dorami)

By the way, it’d be 5 million Gol if it’s the same as before.

Though, Dorami and Marin-chan both think that it’s just 5,000 Gol.

If they knew how much it really cost, they wouldn’t want to buy it in the first place. And, even if they did, the price tag would make them hesitate to use it in battle, in fear that it might break.

Well, that would be putting the cart before the horse. I wonder if I can buy it again this time.

“I’ll go check the price so wait here, Dorami.” (Jade)

“Got it. Dorami’s hoping that the price hasn’t changed, if possible!” (Dorami)

After being sent off by Dorami, I went to the shop owner with the mithril shield in hand.

As Dorami wished, the price hadn’t changed at all.

I paid 5 million Gol and returned to Dorami.

“How was it?” (Dorami)

“It didn’t change.” (Jade)

“Good…” (Dorami)

Saying so, I handed over the mithril shield.

Dorami looked enchanted.

“So this is Dorami’s shield…” (Dorami)

“It’s sturdy, so make sure to use it when defending yourself from attacks.” (Jade)

“Of course! Dorami will be in your care from now on!” (Dorami)

Dorami said to the shiny shield as she stroked it.

She quickly wore the shield on her arm and made a sharp look.

“It suits you.” (Jade)

“Thank you! Dorami has been wanting to go on an adventure for some reason…!” (Dorami)

“First, we’ll have to find a weapon.” (Jade)

“Umu! Let’s get the best weapon!” (Dorami)

Dorami then rushed out of the store.

I chased after her and we headed to the weapon shop together.

“What do you want to get?” (Jade)

“The Dorami Sword!” (Dorami)

“The first generation or the second?” (Jade)

“The second!” (Dorami)

So it’s not a wooden stick, it’s a keychain.

If you want that, we should go to a toy store, not the weapon shop…

You might be able to defeat a slime with it but you’d have to get really close so it’s a bit dangerous.

“Wouldn’t just a SLIGHTLY bigger weapon be better?” (Jade)

“Of course, that’s what Dorami was thinking about too. She wants a big Dorami Sword!” (Dorami)

Dorami looked around the store, completely excited.

Though, as expected, she wasn’t able to find the Dorami Sword (Big).

“Is it already sold out…?” (Dorami)

“More like, I don’t think they sell it in the first place.” (Jade)

“W-why? Even though it’s so cool…” (Dorami)

“Even though it looks cool, it’s not very practical as an actual weapon. After all, the actual blade has a dragon wrapped around it.” (Jade)

“Y-you’re right…! How could Dorami not have seen that…?” (Dorami)

Dorami was disappointed.

We started looking at other weapons, but she still remained pretty down.

Even though she was still excited until a while ago…The gap is making me sad.

In that case—

“It’s going to take a while but, do you want to have it made?” (Jade)

“Y-you can do that?!” (Dorami)

“Yeah. Some adventurers order custom-made weapons at blacksmiths. Though, whether they decide to accept it or not depends on the craftsmen themselves.” (Jade)

“Let’s go! Dorami will sincerely ask them to make it!” (Dorami)

Dorami then regained her cheerfulness.

She pulled my hand as we headed for the blacksmith.

After walking for a while, a workshop made of bricks came into view. We took a peek from the entrance.

“S-so this is…” (Dorami)

Seeing the muscular old men walking around with hammers in their hands, Dorami flinched.

But, she can’t get her ideal weapon if she doesn’t go in there.

She tapped her cheeks before stepping into the workshop with a straight face.

At that moment—

“Hey! Didn’t I tell you children are not allowed here!” (Boss)

“Hiiii?! S-sorry…!” (Dorami)

Dorami quickly hid behind me.

In a small voice, she muttered, “B-but, 12-year-olds are also considered adults…”

“I don’t think they’re talking about you, Dorami.” (Jade)

“R-really?” (Dorami)

“Yeah, look.” (Jade)

I pointed to the back of the workshop.

There was a girl being scolded there.

She had red hair and dark skin, she looked about the same age as Dorami.

“But Papa, I can help with your work too!” (Girl)

“Children shouldn’t talk as if they know everything!” (Boss)

“B-but, look! I made this, you know?” (Girl)

The girl showed the sword to her father.

Looking at it from here, it’s a splendid sword.

“Did you make it again while Papa wasn’t here?! Who was the one that guided you this time?! Is it that guy?! Or that guy?!” (Boss)

T/N: He called himself Papa.

“I won’t say it! I promised to keep it a secret from Papa! I will keep my promise!” (Girl)

“It’s admirable for you to keep your promises!” (Boss)

He caressed his daughter’s hair.

“But, as long as Papa is here, Kajimina, you aren’t allowed to make weapons!” (Boss)

T/N: Her name is literally カジミナ (Kajimina). I’m guessing it’s from the Japanese word 家事見習 (Kajiminarai) meaning apprentice in housekeeping, could be wrong.

“But Papa, you’re injured! I’m already 12 years old, I can help you!” (Kajimina)

“It’s really nice that you want to help me!” (Boss)

He once again caressed his daughter’s hair.

“You don’t have to help Papa! Help Mama instead!” (Boss)

“But, I love Papa so much… I want to be like you in the future…” (Kajimina)

“…I didn’t hear you very well. Say that again!” (Boss)

“I love Papa so much! I want to become a fine craftsman like Papa!” (Kajimina)

“I see! So you love Papa that much!” (Boss)

Another caress.

His tone is pretty harsh, but he really loves his daughter.

“Still, Kajimina, you aren’t allowed to make weapons!” (Boss)

“W-why? Even though I was able to make a proper weapon…” (Kajimina)

“It’s certainly a splendid weapon made by someone only 12 years old! You could even say it’s too splendid! Don’t you think so too?!” (Kajimina)

“We do!” answered the rest of the craftsmen in unison.

“If that’s the case then I can help Papa—” (Kajimina)

“Even so, I can’t allow Kajimina, who’s still very young, to make an important weapon that adventurers entrust their very lives to!” (Boss)

With that, he turned around to walk further into the workshop.

Kajimina-chan was looking at the uncle’s back as if to say something, but eventually gave up and trudged towards the exit.

Then, we ran into each other.

“Ah, welcome—Wha—, Jade-sama?!” (Kajimina)

“Jade-sama?!”

“Did you just say Jade-sama?!”

“It really is!”

The blacksmiths all began rushing towards us.

“Hey—! You guys, don’t leave your posts!” (Boss)

With a shout from the uncle, the blacksmiths promptly returned to their posts.

It seems like Kajimina-chan’s father is the boss of this workshop.

The boss walks up to us and lowers his head.

“I’ve never even dreamed that Jade-sama would come here.” (Boss)

“Could you be requesting a sword on the level of a national treasure?!” (Kajimina)

“Hey! Children shouldn’t interfere in a conversation between adults!” (Boss)

“I don’t mind. Also—” (Jade)

“Dorami is also a child! That’s why Kajimina can participate in the conversation!” (Dorami)

Dorami said in a loud voice.

She must’ve wanted to do something for Kajimina-chan who kept being yelled at.

“Hooh. Is this lady that Dorami-chan?” (Boss)

 “You know about Dorami?” (Dorami)

“There is nobody in the capital that doesn’t know about Dorami-chan. A young lady who always accompanies Jade-sama on his journey.” (Boss)

“S-so he was a good person…” (Dorami)

“Sorry for yelling at you,” was the expression that I saw on Dorami’s face.

Then, he shook his head as if to tell her she doesn’t need to apologize.

“The client is Dorami and she is requesting Kajimina!” (Dorami)

“M-me?!” (Kajimina)

“Is that really okay? Her skills are definitely divine compared to a 12-year-old and in the future, she’ll definitely become a blacksmith that’ll make a name for herself in the country, but Kajimina is still young.” (Boss)

“Dorami believes that Kajimina will make a splendid weapon!” (Dorami)

The boss then cried.

“To think that Kajimina… That Kajimina who was still wearing diapers until just the other day… To think that she would become a blacksmith with such expectations…” (Boss)

“I stopped wearing diapers more than 10 years ago!” (Kajimina)

“Understood! If Dorami-chan is saying that much, please let Kajimina make it for you!” (Boss)

“I-is that okay?!” (Kajimina)

“Yeah. But, you need to have the resolve to entrust yourself with Dorami-chan’s life!” (Boss)

“O-okay! Understood! Thank you, Papa! I’ll do my very best so as to not smear Papa’s name!” (Kajimina)

The boss cried, “You’ve grown so much…” and retreated to the back of the workshop.

“For now, let me bring you to another room.” (Kajimina)

Kajimina-chan guided us to a small room.

There was a blueprint spread out on the table.

She put it away and spread out a large piece of paper.

“So, what kind of weapon do you want, Dorami-san? A sword? Axe? Spear?” (Kajimina)

“A sword!” (Dorami)

“I see! So, a two-handed?! One-handed?! Or maybe a dagger?!” (Kajimina)

Perhaps because it was her first request, Kajimina-chan was very enthusiastic.

However—

“The Dorami Sword!” (Dorami)

She was taken aback by Dorami’s words.

“What kind of sword is that…?” (Kajimina)

Dorami made gestures to convey the image of the Dorami Sword.

The clearer the image, the more confused Kajimina-chan became.

“I-I see… So you want a dragon wrapped around the blade and have beautiful pebbles embedded in its eyes so you can fight in style…” (Kajimina)

“Exactly!” (Dorami)

“I see, I see.” (Kajimina)

Kajimina-chan glanced at me.

That’s a gaze asking for help.

“What Dorami means is that she wants to fight in a cool way, with a weapon that even she can swing around.” (Jade)

“I see! Then, a one-handed sword or a dagger would be best!” (Kajimina)

“Yeah. The problem is the dragon that wraps around the blade would dull the weapon’s performance… And Dorami wants to have a dragon there no matter what.” (Jade)

“That’s the only thing Dorami can’t concede on.” (Dorami)

“Is that so…? If there absolutely has to be a dragon, does it have to be on the blade?” (Kajimina)

“What do you mean?” (Jade)

“Here, like this—” (Kajimina)

Kajimina drew the Dorami Sword (provisional).

It’s a dagger with the dragon on the handguard.

The design showed the dragon’s wings on the handguard and the dragon’s face in between.

“S-so cool…!” (Dorami)

“Right. With this, you’ll also be able to store it in the sheath.” (Jade)

“Dorami wants you to make this!” (Dorami)

Dorami’s eyes sparkled.

Facing such expectant eyes, Kajimina’s expression darkened.

“…It might be better to have Papa make this.” (Kajimina)

“Why? Even though you wanted to make it so much…” (Dorami)

“It’s because the dragon is so detailed… Papa can make it look just like the ideal dragon in Dorami-san’s image but I wouldn’t be able to do the same, it might just look ugly.” (Kajimina)

Kajimina-chan said so with a voice lacking in confidence and lowered her head.

However—

“You wouldn’t know until you even try! Dorami believes in Kajimina! Since she believes in you, you should also believe in yourself!” (Dorami)

Kajimina-chan raised her head at Dorami’s words.

“Y-you’re right. If I give up before I even try, I wouldn’t be able to do anything.” (Kajimina)

“Yeah! Dorami is determined to beat the slime to a pulp before she even tries to fight it! Kajimina should also be more confident!” (Dorami)

“Y-yes! Thank you very much! I’ll do my best!” (Kajimina)

“Dorami is expecting it to be really cool!” (Dorami)

Though the expectations were set really high, Kajimina-chan didn’t refuse the request.

We left the smithy as they said they would deliver the dagger to our house after it was completed.
