Chapter 13: Fake apology

Xia Xi had been under a lot of pressure lately because of the midterm exam and she had arranged for her friends from Class A to go study in the private room of the library with her on Saturday. She had gotten up early and dressed carefully, but as soon as she went downstairs, she saw the backs of Xia Yao and Ji Huai going out together. She didn’t understand why the country bumpkin had such a good relationship with the boy. When she came home every day, the both of them would always be together.
Did Ji Huai perhaps like stupid people? Impossible, Xia Yao must be manipulating him.
Xia Xi sprayed some perfume, touched her face, and looked at herself once again in the mirror. Under the curved eyebrows were a pair of big black eyes, with double eyelids and long curled eyelashes that flickered every time she blinked. She looked delicate and innocent and she didn’t believe any boy didn’t like this kind of look. Xia Yao must definitely be the one forcing Ji Huai to stay so close.

The private room of City T’s library was occupied by Xia Xi and her friends. Xia Xi was struggling to finish a set of papers while her friends were done and relaxing around her, chatting together and correcting each other’s answers.
“This paper is simply hell-mode! It’s too difficult!” One of the girls was going over Xia Xi’s paper, “Xia Xi, you’re so worthy of being at the top of our grade! All multiple-choice questions are right!”
“I’m okay, I’m still very behind the first place.” Xia Xi smiled lightly.
“By the way, do you think Ji Huai will get first? The last additional math problem involved university knowledge and he was able to answer at a glance.”
“God is really unfair, he not only has such a handsome face, but his academic performance is also so good!”
Xia Xi smiled. Yes, Ji Huai was indeed a very good person but every time she had tried to invite him to study at the library, she had been rejected. It was really difficult, how could she deepen their relationship?

“Doesn’t Ji Huai live at your house?” A girl raised her head, “I always see him wait for your stupid sister after school, why doesn’t he go home with you?”
Xia Xi instinctively gave a little lie: “You all know how gentle Ji Huai is. My sister pesters him so much, he just can’t refuse.”
“Xia Xi, you are too kind. That scumbag is probably trying to seduce him, you should be careful.”
“Like she has a chance! Xia Xi is the one who looks good with Ji Huai and Ji Huai likes our Xia Xi!”
“That’s right, Xia Yao is so bad at school, I am not sure she even has a brain.”
“This kind of person… she cannot compare to Ji Huai and Xia Xi.”
People who studied well always were a little arrogant.
With a smile on her face, Xia Xi nodded. She also looked down on that stupid sister of her. She was not even able to get 20 points on a 100 points test!

At the same moment, the door of the private room was slammed open. A girl with a bag on one shoulder and a cup of milk tea in her right hand walked in, and her high ponytail swayed with each of her steps.
Outside, Ji Huai had also heard some of the discussion inside. He had thought it would be better to study in another room but as he was about to lead the girl away, he heard her voice.
When Xia Yao heard the girls chatting inside, instead of anger, she wanted to laugh, feeling that her vicious character image was really popular.
“We are all classmates. Ji Huai, let’s just study here.”
Her voice was loud and clear and instantly hit the hearts of all the girls present, and all the ones who had just been talking badly about her immediately bowed their heads.

For a while, only the rustle of pens across paper sounded in the private room.
In such a strong learning atmosphere, Xia Yao didn’t want to start trouble. It wasn’t time for her scene yet and she could do another set of math problems.
Xia Yao finished the last equation and felt very refreshed.
[Host, it’s 9:12 now and there are 10 minutes left before your self-awareness gets obliterated and your original character’s setting gets restored.]
The system prompted in her head and her complexion changed. She turned her head slightly to look at Xia Xi and found out she was talking with Ji Huai. Some girls were whispering not far away, deliberately suppressing their voices but not enough for Xia Yao to not hear them
“Like I said, Ji Huai likes Xia Xi and he even came to study with her.”
“Yes, they look too good together. They’re so perfect for each other I can’t even be jealous.”
“Haha, have you noticed that Xia Yao has been writing papers since she came in? She’s trying to make it look like she is studying hard, this is hilarious.”
“She probably wants to create a good student image to seduce Ji Huai. He must not know she’s the worst in the grade yet. He just transferred, he hasn’t seen how stupid she is.”

Hearing this, Xia Yao who had just put her pen away couldn’t help it anymore and chuckled. They knew her as a delinquent who was fighting fiercely every day yet were talking ill of her. Did they think she had a good temper? She gently touched the pen with her finger before she stood up and coldly glanced at them.
Under her gaze, the girls lowered their heads again and felt that the room had become much colder in an instant.
“Next time, maybe don’t let me hear you gossip so much and disturb my study, okay?” The smile on her mouth was very bright and her voice resonated in the whole room. “Otherwise—”
Before she could finish her sentence, a loud noise was heard. The back of the chair in front of her was taken apart, revealing the wooden edges. Xia Yao was still holding a stick in her hand, she smiled gently and inserted it back before restoring the chair to its original appearance.

At the same time, Xia Xi had gotten Ji Huai’s pen and was thanking him: “Thank you, Ji Huai, I will definitely return it once I’m done.” Her voice was sweet and charming but when she noticed Xia Yao’s actions, she frowned unhappily.
She really didn’t like Xia Yao at all. Because of her, her identity as a fake daughter had been revealed to everyone and her parents had gone abroad. Xia Xi stood up and reprimanded: “Xia Yao, what are you doing!”

Xia Yao’s head suddenly turned and she looked at Xia Xi. Oh, she was still trying to find a way to throw the milk tea at her, she had not expected the heroine would rush at her so fast.
“Can’t you see? Your little sister is playing matchmaker for you and Ji Huai.” Xia Yao smiled, “Dear sister, I am just helping you out.”
“Help me? What are you helping me with?” Xia Xi was stunned.
“I just heard from your friends that Ji Huai had come to the private room for you and that he liked you. When I heard it, I thought that…”
Xia Xi glanced at the teenager beside her and her face paled. She quickly interjected: “Xia Yao, what are you talking about? You’re here to stop me and Ji Huai, aren’t you?”
She had been subtly insinuating to her friends that Ji Huai liked her; at this time, she must not be exposed!
“Ah, no. I am just helping you out. This is the most critical time in the third year of high school. How can my sister have time to fall in love?”
“If you have time, why don’t you go read more books?” Xia Xi’s eyebrows furrowed in an extremely displeased expression.
“Of course, we are such good sisters. I also hope I can study better so I can be worthy of being your sister, right?” Xia Yao replied, “Sister, you should also read more. You need better subjects to pester the person you like with studies.”
“Xia Xi, do you like Ji Huai?” Xia Xi’s friends were taken aback, “Didn’t you say he was the one that liked you?”
Xia Xi’s eyes flashed with panic and she quickly thought of a countermeasure: “Xia Yao, you can’t slander me just because you hate me! You are too much!”
“Is it slander?” Xia Yao smiled lightly as if she was watching a joke, “When I came in, I heard someone say I was pestering Ji Huai. Isn’t that slander then?”
“This…” The panic on Xia Xi’s face became even more obvious. She didn’t dare to look at Ji Huai and said: “This is all a misunderstanding.”
“Oh. So it turns out it’s all a misunderstanding.”

At this moment, the boy who hadn’t made a sound since the argument had started suddenly stood up and looked strangely at the girl next to him.
“There is no misunderstanding. Xia Xi, you should apologize.”
“What? Why? Ji Huai, what are you talking about?” Xia Xi’s pupils shrank in disbelief.
“You slander Xia Yao, shouldn’t you apologize?” His voice was strangely clear in the private room.
Xia Xi was stunned and her mind went blank. It was impossible for her to apologize, she had done nothing wrong!
“Then again, you are slandering me too, perhaps you want to apologize to me first?” Ji Huai said again.
The entire room was quiet and the girls at the table were all shocked. They didn’t know who to believe for a while but as they watched Ji Huai, they faintly felt that they were closer to the truth.

[Host, it’s 9:21 now and there is 1 minute left before your self-awareness gets obliterated and your original character’s setting gets restored.]
The system prompted again. Xia Yao was about to watch Xia Xi’s joke and was startled for a second. Ah, it was fine, she didn’t need a fake apology anyway. She looked down at the milk tea on the table and picked it up.
“I don’t need half-hearted excuses. Here, dear sister, this is for you.” She threw the milk tea at Xia Xi heavily, “Six walnuts, it nourishes the brain.”
She had carefully prepared this drink for her, after all.
“How about you start thinking about what you say first from now on? Don’t pour dirty water on your little sister all day long.” She smiled, turned around, and left the private room. She walked towards the bookshelves and Ji Huai followed her.
—From the moment she entered the room, she had immersed herself in test questions and then had to listen to Xia Xi’s words. Ji Huai could guess she was in a bad mood and it was really heartbreaking to have such a slandering sister!
